Do you still use check as a payment? |
|
This morning I was rush going to Walmart try to get a book cover for my daughter. Found the book cover and brought it to cashier to pay for it. There's only one person in front of me, an old lady, and the cashier already done bagging her items. And she took out her check book and start writing down to pay for her items. Gosh, it took about 7 minutes until she's done, and unfortunately it's only one cashier open that early. Here another sample from the commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddwa3YlkMlU It's pretty funny if you watch it.
These days it's not so many people using the check book anymore. Specially when you shop and there is long line just to do the check out. Using the check, will definitely hold up the line. Do you or do you know anybody still doing this?

1. maezee (4631) | 4 months ago | Why write up a check when you can easily use your debit card for the same effect? Debit/Check cards have almost totally replaced checks. Only a few places still take checks nowdays, too, and the ones I know are: Cub Foods, Target, Wal-Mart, and a few smaller businesses in my area, but that's about it. Many places will not take a personal check from you anymore.
I think at places like Wal-Mart, they run it through electronically so you don't even have to fill out all of it (and you end up getting your check back). I've written a check once or twice at Target because I forgot my debit card at home or in the car or something like that. I didn't hold up the line, though, because I'm able to write pretty quickly, and I already had the signature, date, and "pay to the order of.." lines filled out before I even got in the store.

Coming to your point, it always happens, there will be only person before you in the queue and either this person would be buying provisions for the next six months at a single go or else the approval for his credit card will take ages.It always happen when you are in a hurry.

| silver245 (56) | 4 months ago | Hi ibuemma & tdemex! I can actually agree with both of you. I no longer write checks. I use my debit card when shopping and pay my bills online. I used to be one of those people that got impatient when people took a long time to check out. But I've learned that the aggravation I felt was just making me more stressed out on top of all the other stresses in life! There are some times when I'm in a hurry to get somewhere else that I get upset if there's only one cashier open or something like that. But I realize that that's not caused by the other people in line or the cashier either. My Dad is 86 years old and goes to the grocery store every day, and he always writes a check. I tried quite a few years ago to explain to him how he could use his debit card, but he feels that it's more complicated. When I was younger I couldn't understand why older people didn't want to do things the easier, newer ways. But since I've seen my parents get like that, and I know I'm even starting to get like that with some things, it's easier for me to understand.:)

4. dorannmwin (2210) | 4 months ago | We very rarely use our check book anymore. We've actually gone to paying the greatest majority of our bills online through the companies and as far as shopping in general, we use our debit card to pay for what we owe. There is one of our utility companies that doesn't allow a customer to pay online and it really drives me insane. I would much rather be able to go online and pay the bill when it is convenient to me than to have to go to the place and pay them in person. The one exception to the rule about not writing checks when we are shopping is when we are buying a large ticket item that is more than our maximum daily limit for our debit card. In this situation, the only way that we can pay is by using the check book.

ibuemma (1226) | 4 months ago | There are only couple bills that I need to use the chec to pay it. But the rest I just use the debit card. And it's also easier to track your money. I can just go online and pull up all my transaction if I forget, where the money go? LOL

6. dawnald (10050) | 4 months ago | I am the evil check writer. bwa ha ha
But I do try to speed things up by writing the payee and the date while I'm still in line, so all I have to write are the amounts and my signature. Doesn't take more than a minute.
Apparently speeding people through is important to some folks though. There was another discussion on the same lines except it was about people who count out the correct change...

|
ibuemma (1226) | 4 months ago | I think I remember that. haahha...this debit card just eliminate the wait and the necessity of counting your change. All you have to do is check your receipt after you out the line.

8. rosepedal64 (1464) | 4 months ago | With the way the banks are set up now you don't have to write those checks. You get the debit card or some banks call it check card. I barely use checks. I surely don't use them when I am shopping. It takes way to long to write it out and then you have to wait to get it approved their the system that approves checks..I know we like to never got my mother in law to stop writing those checks. But she has and now using her debit card...

ibuemma (1226) | 4 months ago | I think that debit card really has the same function as writing the check just more simple. But there still some people don't trust the plastic card, because it is similar with credit card.

9. cripfemme (5750) | 4 months ago | No, I don't. The problem for me was that I could never remember when I wrote a check to someone so I would overdraw my account especially when they didn't cash it right away. Now I use debit card or cash. Debit card is preferable for me because cash is hard to handle with my mobility impairment. With the card all I do is swipe it and the money comes out of my account right away so no one can forget to cash it for months and leave me screwed.
