Warning warning, do you run to the restroom often, are you thirsty all the time |
This discussion was triggered by an older one I just respondedd to in which the poster was complaining about having to go to the bathroom at night a lot of times, and always being thirsty.those are two of the first classic symptoms of diabetes. this is sort of a warning and a question to, how many of you have seen these two things happening to you a lot lately? have you thought maybe you should have a check up for diabetes? I know I ignored those classic symptoms because I didnt have alot of information about them at the time, and i just thought that I had drank too much water during the day, and that when I was really terribly thirsty that I had not drank enough water. It did not dawn on me that these were symptoms of diabetes til I was diagnosed later.

1. book1962 (14760) | 4 months ago | Hi Hatley, you are right but not everyone has these symptoms. I did not feel thirsty all the time and didnt run to the restroom numerous times either. when I was diagnosed in 2006 it was at a time when I had some stomach problems and they took a blood sample and then my doctor said looks like you are diabetic, and then he told me to have my blood sugar measured next morning on an empty stomach, then go home and eat and return two hours after finishing the meal to have it checked again and ahaaaaaa there it was skyrocketing.

Hatley (21687) | 4 months ago | hi book1962 you are right not everybody does have those symptoms'and I think thats why diabetes is called the silent killer, some people dont know that they have it til they get sick with something else, I know i didnt and yet there are symtoms that do show in a lot of people. Ihad ' that silly earache and the doctor found the old blood test.
| |
book1962 (14760) | 4 months ago | wish I had had real symptoms. the only thing that happened was when in the evening I sat here working online a bit and started laughing about something and the next thing I remember is me on the floor telling my husband to please let me sleep. I had collapsed obviously and when I was awake enough I reached up for the box with the jelly gum bears and that was the moment I knew I could be diabetic.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 4 months ago | hi book that made me think of a stupid thing I did at work once.we had a box of mixed donuts, well I was already a diabetic so should have known better but I ate three of them.three. well I just sat there, I was so sleepy and could not even stand up. they would come in and ask are you all right. I would grin and sleep. so the boss c ame in and told 'carol the second in command to drive me to my apartment just two blocks away. I got home and went into a cold sweat, I had crashed from superhigh to too low, down to 40o so my husband, smart man, made me drink an eight ounce glass of coca cola and soon I was about one hundred. but that really scared me,so i never did that again.
| |
book1962 (14760) | 4 months ago | hi Hatley, sounds familiar. Happens to me on weekends most of the time cause I am doing paid mails and mylotting and forget the time and also good eating habits. lol The problem here is that I dont really recognise it when the blood sugar is going down but I realise when its somewhere about 40-60 and then I really speed up to get into the kitchen and get me some good quick carbs. I know when its nearing the 40-50 cause then I get sort of restless. Hubby notices it too and then asks me when did you eat something proper last time.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 4 months ago | yes I dont shake anymore when its low but my vision starts to get spots in front of my eyes so then I check and take some candy or four ounces of orange juice
| |
book1962 (14760) | 4 months ago | I once had these vision spots too, it was quite funny. In fact at that time I tried to read something from a users manual to my husband and suddenly I couldnt read any more and only saw these spots. Luckily my boss who is a diabetic too though using insulin, had told me that with about 60 he wont be able to see clearly so I raced to my room and got me the glucometer........

angelajoy (981) | 4 months ago | If there aren't always symptoms, then we should all be conscious of our sugar intake. This really made me worry because I love sweets. I thought that my body must be in good shape because I'm not having any symptoms of diabetes, but I wasn't aware that sometimes there could be no symptom at all.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | yes at times I have heard that there arent any real symptoms but I think a lot of times people do have symptoms but they attribute them to other causes so we all should have ourselves checked for diabetes occasionally just to be safe.
| |
book1962 (14760) | 3 months ago | hi Hatley the only thing that could have been a symptom here was my tiredness but with a life of getting up at 4 am then commuting to work 4 hours by train and working 6 hours full speed and commuting the same 4 hours back home I thought its normal that I am always tired and only want my sleeeeeep. lol
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | hi book1962 you need sleep not worry about diabetes, of course would be tired, commuting is just such a chore. I once fell asleep coming back from work and woke up at the end of the line one town past where I wanted to get off.the conductor was very sweet and let me ride back for free. I did get a nice nap.lol lol

book1962 (14760) | 3 months ago | hi Hatley fortunately my inner clock works fine and I never was too late to get off the train at my destination.

Hatley (21687) | 2 months ago | hI book1962 it was so weird how I found out I had diabetes Ihad been going to this little clinic sponsored by Irvine medical center using interns, well the vietnamese doctor was replaced by a new doctor and I had gone to this new doctor with an ear ache. he said, mrs. Hatley I can give you antibiotics for your ear, but did you know you have diabetes? I was floored, I had had no idea and the test had been on my records for at least six months. Looking back I remembered I had beendrinking a lot of water and going to the bathroom a lot, and just blaming it on the water, also my eyes kept blurring. so I did get busy, lost fifty pounds and was taken off all medications. now I am back again at much too heavy.
| |
book1962 (14760) | 2 months ago | hi Hatley I also lost a bit of weight only 14 pounds or so and half of it came back. But my doctor said as long as the blood sugar and all the other blood parameters are okay no need to worry.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 2 months ago | hi yes my doctor just recently told me that just fifteen percent of your overweight if you lose it will help to control it.my problem is my sweet tooth and my self control shame on me. I know now that I c an do it.

Hatley (21687) | 4 months ago | hi kitty I am feeling pretty good. I am glad you were cleared.it'is just so easy to have the tests and then you know you are okay. I 'think I had been getting up a lot to go the bathroom but I never associated it with diabetes. then after I learned I had it I found that my mom had had diabetes for years and hid the fact. she could have helped me so much had she told me as I would have changed the way I ate and the way I thought about exercising and overweight too.

kitty42 (1165) | 4 months ago | Hello my friend
Wow, My mom has high blood pressure and I do as well, I don't think we have anyone with diabetes in the immediate family, but high blood pressure yes, when they told me I did not have it I was really happy, my neighbor and a few of her family members have it, she use to tell me all the time to get checked, so when I did I was really happy.her nephew use to get sick alot and her daughter would come get me to help him, you know how you can be in the midst of something then come to find out it happens to you, well this was not the case and I am really happy, he suffers so much its really scary.
Thanks my friend, great discussion.

Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | hi kitty I am so happy you found you do not have diabetes, as so many people have it and do not' even know they have it until they start having side effects.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | oh I found out to day that I can exercise here in my room for ten minutes at a time four or five times and keep my blood sugar level right where it belongs. this is great. I dont have to walk ten miles just exercise here.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | no not now kitty if I had known when that vietnamese intern has that blood test on my chart I might have been able to but it was too late when the new intern came. but I have learned to cope with it and to live as normal a life as anyone else. Just have to be careful what I eat and most of us should do that anyway.

Hatley (21687) | 4 months ago | hi riysasm yes it is and the symtoms are so common that most of'us wou ld think we had just drank too much water, or had not drank 'enough'and would never have thought of going to a doctor to be checked out.

Hatley (21687) | 4 months ago | hi suspenseful that really should be put into the list of symtoms as for a lot of us that is one of the first symptoms. I tried so hard before I was finally diagnosed and nothing ever helped. well then when this doctor found my test and told me, he put me on glyburide and suggested I lose as much weight as I could.well I worked my butt off and exercised one hour every day and walked for thirty minutes and my blood sugar came way down, and I did lose weight.so much that he took me off the pills and my blood pressure med and I just controlled my diabetes by what I ate and daily exercise, then my husband died unexpectedly. I went into an emotional tailspin, put on a lot of weight and my blood glucose went up,so back I went onto medications and the whole bit, and pretty much I have stayed that way. my overweight is a constant bugaboo for me.Are you able to lose any weight now? hope so suspense take care.
| |
suspenseful (17149) | 4 months ago | The trouble is even with the glyburide and trying to cut down, I could not lose weight. Then I read somewhere that the reason could be that we are no longer eating grass fed meat and I remembered that my own grandmother ate a lot of suet and fatty meats and lard and yet she never gained, so I started to add chromium to my diet more then what is in the vitamin and mineral pills. I find that they just have the minimum and even with the high potency which is the ones I take, it is not enough. So I have been closing weight and my blood sugar is down. I am also looking for foods that will lower my blood sugar because well, my doctor is sort of a pill pusher.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | hi suspensful you just reminded me of something Ihad forgotten and could use right now. I have been'struggling lately with keeping my blood sugar down and having a bad time of it, chromium,my g. our diabetes educator told us about how it helps so much and I have forgotten 'all about that, now to get come chromium.
| |
suspenseful (17149) | 3 months ago | I have enough for a week and I would have gotten some today but my husband wanted me to get a picnic shoulder and I hate all that salt. So I will probably get some next week or when we go out tomorrow, stop in at a drug store and pick some up. It really does help me a lot.
| |
suspenseful (17149) | 3 months ago | And thanks for the best response. I did find that when I just took the medicine the doctor reocmmended it did not lower my blood sugar enough so that if there was a social event, I could have taken a brownie or two. So the chromium does help.
| |
suspenseful (17149) | 2 months ago | I do think diabetes is a disease of omission that you get it because you are lacking something in your diet. I do have a couple if diabetic books one I borrowe3d and one I bought and the food suggestions and herbal medicines they suggest are things that grow in sub tropical countries and I am including around the Mediterranean since I believe I have some ancient Roman in me. And when your ancestors move to a country where they do not have those herbs or foods available, that their bodies are going to suffer. That is why they say that Latinos who originally came from the Mediterreans and African Americans whose ancestors came from the AFrica that have longer growiings seasons are more likely to get diabetes. Now those Latinos are also not only part native Americans but also part from the Mediterranean so they are more likely to get diabetes unless they are able to get the foods they had at home. So I feel if you eat a Meditteranean diet, you will get rid of your diabetes. It is not set in stone. It is just that you have to eat a certain way, the way that your ancestors ate. I suppose people who have always lived in the North and whose ancestors had always lived in Northern climates have other disease to contend with.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 2 months ago | I have just bought some zinc with some other things added and am going to try it. also I do not remember who the doctor was now that was really for the mediterrean diet but it does sound like it makes good sense. it is hard for me here as I have no control over what they serve me but of course I can just not eat some of the high carb things or at least cut back on them.
| |
suspenseful (17149) | 2 months ago | That is a good idea. If you have to eat what is put on your plate, at least you can leave the high carb stuff at the side and after a while they will get the idea that you really want to eat healthier food. The trouble is that some people seem to think more of their pocket books then their health.

5. zandi458 (5964) | 4 months ago | Diabetes is a terrible disease and once you are caught with this disease, it will take a long time to heal or may not heal if you are not careful with your diet. So before this disease lick on us we should be on alert of the warning that you have just stated here. Only when I have eaten chinese food which is loaded with MSG that I feel thirsty every now and then. It is better to refrain from taking too much sweet food as it will invite diabetes to invade our bodies.
| |
| |
Hatley (21687) | 4 months ago | hi zandi yes its not a happy type of disease but it can be lived with and we have so much more information now. as for msg I am horribly'allergic to it and ate at a chinese restaurant once. I came out and got really dizzy, went into the drugstore where the owner knew me, and he called the paramedics. they had to give me an IV of anti allergic medication as I was hardly able to breathe. now i have to ask at any chinese restaurant before I eat, is there msg in your food>?They told me the stuff could kill me as I was highly allergic to it.Some restaurants now show a sign that shows whether or not they use msg. the only time I eat candy or sugary colas is if I have really low blood sugar. I learned the hard way.
| |
suspenseful (17149) | 2 months ago | I am not that bad. I am on the border line and as for allergies, besides nickel, I cannot take too much soy or I get a stomach ache. The trouble is that there are lots of people who ate candies when kids and they did not get it. I mean it is upsetting to hear about those skinny people who ate so much candy or those who had naturally good teeth.
| |
Hatley (21687) | 2 months ago | hi suspenseful yes doesn't it just fry you that skinny people will stuff themselves with all the goodies you and I would' love but cannot eat and I sometimes wonder if they know that if they are doing this because they are the opposite, people with low blood sugar, that a lot of people who suffer with low blood sugar will eventually be diabetics, this is a proven fad

It does not take long to get tested and know that you either haVE it or you are okay.

| |
catdla1 (2755) | 4 months ago | Hi Blaizer! Frequently dozing off and tiredness of dizzyness could be symptoms of many things, including heart disease problems and thyroid issues in addition to the diabetes. Could also be as simple as an iron deficiency. It's important to be diagnosed by a doctor, as none of these possibilities is age specific. Almost all could be equally deadly if not treated.

8. Fortunata (660) | 4 months ago | Not always. Sometimes it can be a kidney infection that makes you go to the bathroom a lot. I've been checked for diabetes because of it, and it turned out to be kidney infection, for me. But you're right that it should be investigated.
| |
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | fortuna that is something I should have mentioned.funny that'same thing cost me fifty dollars over what my insurance paid awhile back.they thought maybe because I had some numbness of my tongue and my blood sugar was low maybe I was having a mini stroke so sent me to the er, and come to find out no stroke, that was great, but a very serious UTI, and I did not even know it as a diabetic you have the same darned symptoms. but once put on a really potent antibiotic it only took a few days to feel great again. I think mine was just a bladder infection but the ER doctor said no matter it is serious and be sure to drink a lot of water too.

9. tattylashes (4295) | 4 months ago | i don't get thirsty alot but i have noticed that i suffer alot of pain while i am sleeping, it is always in my left side under my ribs, if i take a deep intake of breath the pain stops me in my tracks, this has been going on for quite a while and i have been told that it's my IBS, but as soon as i go to the loo for a pee, the pain is gone, but i do ake at least twice in the night to use the bathroom, i think i may have gall stones or something similar to that, eeach time i see the doctor i get told that it's IBS, jeez, i know the pain from IBS and it's nothing like the pain i feel when i am waking in the morning, its so painful and it doesn't go till i have a pee, the ache them stays for a few hours, then it's gone for the rest of the day, but the next morning i wake and it's that same pain all over again.

| |

Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | tattylashes you must go to your doctor and get a cat scan or whateverit was they gave as you sure sound'like the way I was when I had a gall bladder attack, and it will not go away. so get checked to be sure, make the doc listen to you okay.

10. ElicBxn (15533) | 4 months ago | I have been tested steadily for diabetes since I was 22, because I'm thirsty all the time. I'm 55, still thirsty and still not diabetic, but at least I KNOW about it and have been checked on it.
fact is, I tend to run borderline low blood sugar
| |
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | hi ElicBxn well I hate to alarm you but a goodly number of people who get diagnosed with diabetes had low blood sugar'for a long time before they came down with full blown diabetes, so it is great to keep being checked on it. I started out with'low blood sugar down to even getting the shakes from it.
| |
ElicBxn (15533) | 3 months ago | well, like I said - I've been tested and tested, and if I eat right I don't have the low blood sugar,
I just had a blood test in early Sept and my cholesterol was down, and obviously they didn't find diabetes either - and I'm more over weight than my mother ever got and 15 yrs older than when she became borderline diabetic
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | hi elicbxn my doctor told me that if you can control your'weight and even just lose say fifteen percent of what you are overweight that people can keep from even getting diabetes so it does pay to lose a little weight. I did not know this when I found myself diagnosed with diabetes, so much info now that really helps people to avoid the disease.
| |
ElicBxn (15533) | 3 months ago | and they say the only "cure" for adult onset diabetes is extreme weight lost like the bypass surgery
| |
Hatley (21687) | 3 months ago | at least if one loses just fifteen percent then you can be in control and still live just as normal a life as anyone else. as for the surgery thing, you must be grossly overweight to be let into that program, and it has a lot of dangers in it, a lot of people come out okay, but they do not tell of the ones who die from complications and there are a lot of them. I would rather lose my weight the old fashioned way myself.
| |
ElicBxn (15533) | 3 months ago | true, and even if my insurance covered it, I'm just borderline weighing enough
Honestly, my roomie has been over weight since she was a teen, and I've seen how her family eat, so she really doesn't have any idea how a normal meal should look like.
I at least know how much I should be eating, just I've been influenced by all the people around me over eating...
