Lost works of art |
| |
| Roses are red I say phooey If I wanted popups I'd go back to Yuwie Having a case of deja vu here? That's because I posted that lovely work of art two days ago in a discussion talking about the ads that were popping up from the blue highlighted words on here. That discussion got deleted and I didn't want to lose the poem, silly as it is. And no, this discussion isn't about popups or deleted discussions. In college, I took a class about German culture in the first half of the 20th century. There was this painter, Franz Marc. I like his work very much. Sadly, he was killed in World War I. One of his most famous paintings, Tower of Blue Horses, went missing during World War II. Maybe it was destroyed. Maybe it was stolen and will eventually turn up. At least we still have photos of it: http://www.art-prints-on-... I guess a lot of precious things have been lost over the years due to war, fire, etc. A friend of mine over on Yuwie recently had a house fire. He lost, among other things, photos of one of his ancestors that were taken with Abraham Lincoln. I wonder how many of us have lost something precious that we created. Could be a photo, a painting, a poem, a story, whatever. Does anybody have any stories? Which reminds me of an Ann Landers column I read some years back. Don't remember her exact words, but she basically said "those are just things. I recently lost my precious mother." Sometimes we are too obsessed about things, don't you think? | | | | | |

| | hi dawnald yes I think so too,we get so hung up on things even precious things, and forget that our loved ones are even more precious than lovely pieces of art. I love art and music and all of culture, but I have never lost sight of the fact that they are all things, and people are flesh and blood. When we had our disaster this past fall, and all our stuff was put in storage I thought it was the end of everything, but I was wrong. I am still alive and so is my son, and even though the economy sucks right now it will get better and we will be better off. | | | | | | |

| | They are just things but they help place us and I guess that's why they mean something. I hate to see photographs in antique shops, auctions etc as they are someone's family and it seems a great shame to me that folk throw these things out as unimportant when they are clearing houses etc. However, I would always prefer to have the person than their photo! | | | | | | |

| | Good morning, my friend! I remember the "Tower of Blue Horses", when it was used as a "Wheel of Fortune" clue on Yuwie! I have to say, I had never heard of it until then. But, I remember the picture of it that you showed there and liked it! I can think of a lot of things I've lost over the years, but it never generally bothered me, as with moving so much in my life and not being able to take everything with us all the time, things just have never held that much importance to me. Except one. As you know, my son is profoundly deaf, but he had more hearing and speech when he was very young. One day, when he was about 18 months old, I made a tape recording of he and I talking and singing, just spending a regular day at the house together. It became very precious to me, as I had no idea then, how much his ability to speak and sing was never going to be the same. As time went on, I would play that for myself, every now and then--and always it would bring tears to my eyes. One night, many years later, there was going to be a broadcast of Thomas Edison's biography on PBS. Thomas Edison had always been a lifetime hero of my husband's. He wasn't going to be home to watch the program, as he was working. As a nice gesture to him, I decided to tape record the show. This was before we had a VCR--even before anyone had one. The room was rather dark, and I went searching through our box of cassettes, looking for a blank one or at least one that it wouldn't matter if I taped over. I grabbed one that looked like a likely candidate and taped the entire program, which actually took 2 tapes. As you may have guessed by now, I accidentally discovered the next day that I had taped over my little son's voice! It was gone forever and I was heartsick!! I've never gotten over it completely--the thought still brings tears to my eyes. :-( One of the things that I have learned over the years is that people seldom mourn the loss of a thing--what they mourn is the loss of memories, whether it's a person, place or thing. I learned that pictures, recordings of any kind, should be kept as safe as gold. In the end, those memories and their recordings are what matter. You can't replace them and even if you've lost someone, you can still bring them back in a recording, if only for a little while. | | | | | | |

| | You're right, it's the loss of memories. The things that help us remember become precious to us. I had a couple of photo albums that I put together as a teenager and into my early 20's. My Aunt, who's just a few years older than me, was in an abusive relationship. When it ended, her ex destroyed all her photos of her kids. Every single one. So I loaned my albums to her because they had pictures of the kids when they were little and she was going to make copies. Sadly, my aunt got into drugs and I never saw my albums again. :-( At least she got off the drugs though... | | | |

| | Well, I'm glad she got off the drugs, but OH! to lose those precious albums!! As someone who has lost her children's photos, you'd think she would have been sure to take care of your pictures. :-( I sure hope they show up one day! | | | |

| | Yes, we do get too hung up on things and stuff that really isn't that important. Our families are what is the most important, everything else is just stuff. I checked out the Franz Marc pictures at the link you listed (mostly because of the word horses) LOL and his stuff is wonderful. Very vibrant, colorful, my favorite type and subject too. Horses are my favorites but I like is cats and dogs too. Thank you for introducing me to Franz Marc! | | | | | | |

| | I'm a cat person myself, but I have a reproduction of one of his horse paintings in my living room. You're welcome... But yep, our families are more important than the things that we collect, although as my friend Holly pointed out, sometimes the things help us remember. | | | |

| | Hi dawnald, I once had my purse stolen, I didn't bother about the money that was in there but a photo, it was a photo of my mum when she was a young woman, it was the only photo I had that of my mum at hat age, and still feel rather anry about it when I think of it. I know its only a photo but it meant a lot to me, now that mum has gone, I treasure the memories of my mum. Tamara | | | | | | |

| | Oh yes I have lost many things that are precious to me. Photographs of days of yore. When I left for college, these photos were kept at my parent's home. As they did a lot of moving from one house and another, these personal effects are no more. Well, that is life cest la vie! | | | | | | |
