Taking a plane for the first time - any tips or advice? email this discussion to a friend?

I have never been on an airplane. Tomorrow me and my sister (who HAS been on a plane) will be taking an hour-long flight to Chicago, IL from Minneapolis, MN (USA). Not too long of a flight.

What are some things I should know about the plane ride, or the air port?

Anything I should be warned about?
Besides that I'll have to take off my shoes, and that I can't bring bottled water (all my sister could think of - lol).

Please share your experiences with me! Thanks! happy

Take ease and it should be very excited for your first time to fly in the air, and it's also should feel very cool...not so much concern about the first time by plane, just like by train, by bus, or other pubilc transportation. but it's will take you more time for checking in, so please arrive at airport in advance about 1~1.5 hrs.

you maybe suffer a little bit pains with your ears when the plane take off and landing because of unbalance between your body and outer atmospheric pressure,so please be ready for some chew guns, i am not sure if your flight have supplied this or not...when you feel uncomfortable, you can balance the pressure by chewing guns. thanks and Good travel

Hi there, i have experienced to ride on airplace for 6 times already but its not a long ride. About 2 hours anyway, I remember i was very excited when i first ride on plane, i thought it would be very hard for me but my experienced was just fine. And i can say its more convenient than riding on a bus. You can walk in the airplane go to restroom if you want without feeling anything. Anyway, bringing water is fine, but it was provided by the plane already i dont know if all airlines do that but in my 6 times of taking on a place we provided drinks.

well, go in the airport ahead of time atleast 1 hour to 1 1/2 its better to be there on time or ahead of time than to be left by the plane hehe, goodluck again and keep on mylottingthumbup

Consider the flight to be a bus Journey that you need to be there a couple of hours beforehand for,due to security Measures, and look up the info on the TSA website about what you can and can't bring on the plane, and put as much as you can in your hold bag(s) so you don't injure yourself or anybody else putting things into the overhead bins..wear comfy slip on shoes..bring some gum to chew at takeoff to keep your ears from "popping"..and as it's your first time, get a window seat to see what you've been missing! Also,Make sure to bring Your ticket,ID,and Money/Cards..if it was an international flight,I'd say check your passport is up to date,as you might not be permitted to fly if your passport was close to it's expiry date..as it's an internal flight,Your driver's License should be ok for ID and boarding the flight, but again, check the TSA site. also,Enjoy Your trip!

I'm glad you enjoyed your first flight,You'll know what to expect next time! I like flying at night, with the views out over a city happy I took a look around your other responses to see was there anything I forgot to mention in mine..someone said you should bring along an Ipod..good idea, but the only thing about electronic gadgets on a flight is,the Attendants insist you turn them off bfore and during takeoff and landing, the same for cellphones which they don't allow you to use at all (yet..some aircraft are being upgraded with equipment that will allow cellphone calls from in flight)..I liked having a favourite tune to listen to during takeoff when I had my walkman player along, but it's not permitted now,so you can only use headphones during the flight once they've told you you can..now I bring a book too! Something to entertain You isn't that important on a short flight, but transatlantic or long haul you'd be wishing for something to do if nobody's feeling talkative and the inflight movie sucks!

Hi maezee. I would suggest that you look up your airport's website or check out the following link to see what isn't allowed:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm

Get to the airport at least one hour early for parking and going through security if you already have your tickets. If you don't you should arrive 2 hours before your departure time.

Make sure to bring some gum with you so that your ears don't pop!

Happy flying!

Just relax and and take it easy. Get to the airport in advance and check in, once you check in there is no way the plane will leave without you. Make sure you dont have anything sharp or dangerous in the handbag. Then you can go through security, I dont know your security laws but usually if your shoes are very thick you dont have to take them off, and no bottled water or any liquids off course. Once security is done you can relax on the boarding lounge.

when its time to board the aircraft theres no need to hurry. I usually wait for all the rush to get over. Once on the plane the flight attendent will tell you where your sit is. For short distance flights theres usually around 40 rows, so you can judge where your seat is approximately. During take off see if you feel dizzy, if you do you can close your eyes and you should be ok. But theres a bag in the seat pocket just in case. During the flight your ears might get blocked, just hold your nose and exhale and everything should be ok. Have a safe and happy journey!

Great! Thanks! We ended up being on a smaller plane, only with about 25 rows - so it was easy enough finding our own seats. Thanks for all of your help.

Hello Maezee,

My first flight was to China. I have forgot how I encounter all the check in procedure at the airport all by myself and guess what, I just try to follow what other doing there. And I did check for some sign board.

Here I try to give you some simple steps while check in at the airport, happy
1. Get to the airport
2.Go to the Check In Counter with your Ticket and Luggage, It should be very easy to find. If you cant find it dont be afraid to ask.

3. The person at the check in counter will check your ticket and verify it with your ID or your Passport. They are also going to take your luggage and put it on the conveyor belt.

4. They are going to give you a gate number where you are going to need to go to board your flight. It is called boarding pass.

5. Before you get to your boarding gate, your going to pass through a security check and a custom check. While you walk through the security check your going to place your carry on bag in a x-ray machine as soon as it passes through you can get it back.

6. Proceed to your gate. At the gate there's going to be a whole bunch of seats, you will wait there until someone calls your flight.

Hope all this helps! Enjoy your first flying!

Thank you for simplifying it! This will definitely help me next time; when I'm on my own. I luckily had my sister there and my cousin to navigate us. But I couldn't imagine doing it on my own.

Obviously you don't have the horrible fear of flying like some people do. That's a plus attitude. Certainly there are differences in travelling by land in terms of what things you are allowed to bring with you and how much you can carry but normally this should not be a lot of concern though.

My first experience in air travel was a good one. I have always believed that travelling by plane is a lot safer than by car and this is statistically true. The first discomfort I had is when I heard strange sounds in the plane as it prepares to fly and when we encountered turbulence in the air. Fortunately, I was reading a booklet on what to expect when one travels by air and it helped me a lot.

For whatever it's worth, travelling by plane is a good experience and lots of fun too. Before you fly, remember that there are literally millions of airplanes that take off and touch down in any given time all over the world and it is indeed an exciting experience.

Thank you! It sounds like you're quite at ease with flying, and that's good to hear. The turbulence on our plane made me a little nervous, but other than that, all was well.

Hi!
I never took out my shoes!!!
About the water, you can by it after check in...
All I want to say to you is: be calm, relax, and if you got lucky enough to be near the window, just enjoy your view!
No need to be afraid. Airplane is still the safest transport in the world.
BON VOYAGE!

Hi maezee, well long flights are desperately boring and uncomfortable but you are spared that with a short flight. One thing I always try to do is take an aisle seat as near to the safety exit doors as possible in case of emergency. If there is an irritating child behind you kicking your seat make sure you put a stop to it at once or you'll be putting up with it for the whole flight. Suck a sweet at take off and landing to prevent pressure build up in your ears. happy

Have a good flight.

LOL Luckily no kids were kicking the back of my seat! That would have been horrible.

Don't forget to bring gum! I didn't bring any, and my ears were killing me. Other than that, bring your iPod or something so you don't get bored. An hour trip isn't bad at all, but still if you bring some music or something, it will go by much quicker.

Oh, you might want to take dramamine, if you get motion sickness or anything like that. I don't need it when I fly, but I've known people who do.

myLot reputation of 88/100. maezee (4700)   ranked 696 out of 38,396 in life  3 months ago

It wasn't too bad - it was a pretty short flight. I didn't think to bring my iPod. Next time, though!

The things you need to know about taking an plane:

1. Be ahead of time. Because the seat you bought will be given to others. In short there's no seating arrangement in fact you bought that seat. I hate that! My advise to you is print a copy of your seat and tell it stewardess.

2. Don't bring liquid stuff it will be rejected.

So that's what I recall. And enjoy your trip!
