Taking a plane for the first time - any tips or advice? |
|
I have never been on an airplane. Tomorrow me and my sister (who HAS been on a plane) will be taking an hour-long flight to Chicago, IL from Minneapolis, MN (USA). Not too long of a flight.
What are some things I should know about the plane ride, or the air port?
Anything I should be warned about? Besides that I'll have to take off my shoes, and that I can't bring bottled water (all my sister could think of - lol).
Please share your experiences with me! Thanks!

you maybe suffer a little bit pains with your ears when the plane take off and landing because of unbalance between your body and outer atmospheric pressure,so please be ready for some chew guns, i am not sure if your flight have supplied this or not...when you feel uncomfortable, you can balance the pressure by chewing guns. thanks and Good travel

Also,Make sure to bring Your ticket,ID,and Money/Cards..if it was an international flight,I'd say check your passport is up to date,as you might not be permitted to fly if your passport was close to it's expiry date..as it's an internal flight,Your driver's License should be ok for ID and boarding the flight, but again, check the TSA site. also,Enjoy Your trip!

3. sacmom (5826) | 3 months ago | Hi maezee. I would suggest that you look up your airport's website or check out the following link to see what isn't allowed:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm
Get to the airport at least one hour early for parking and going through security if you already have your tickets. If you don't you should arrive 2 hours before your departure time.
Make sure to bring some gum with you so that your ears don't pop!
Happy flying!

4. Mac6999 (580) | 3 months ago | Just relax and and take it easy. Get to the airport in advance and check in, once you check in there is no way the plane will leave without you. Make sure you dont have anything sharp or dangerous in the handbag. Then you can go through security, I dont know your security laws but usually if your shoes are very thick you dont have to take them off, and no bottled water or any liquids off course. Once security is done you can relax on the boarding lounge.
when its time to board the aircraft theres no need to hurry. I usually wait for all the rush to get over. Once on the plane the flight attendent will tell you where your sit is. For short distance flights theres usually around 40 rows, so you can judge where your seat is approximately. During take off see if you feel dizzy, if you do you can close your eyes and you should be ok. But theres a bag in the seat pocket just in case. During the flight your ears might get blocked, just hold your nose and exhale and everything should be ok. Have a safe and happy journey!

maezee (4313) | 3 months ago | Great! Thanks! We ended up being on a smaller plane, only with about 25 rows - so it was easy enough finding our own seats. Thanks for all of your help.

maezee (4313) | 3 months ago | Thank you for simplifying it! This will definitely help me next time; when I'm on my own. I luckily had my sister there and my cousin to navigate us. But I couldn't imagine doing it on my own.

Certainly there are differences in travelling by land in terms of what things you are allowed to bring with you and how much you can carry but normally this should not be a lot of concern though.
My first experience in air travel was a good one. I have always believed that travelling by plane is a lot safer than by car and this is statistically true. The first discomfort I had is when I heard strange sounds in the plane as it prepares to fly and when we encountered turbulence in the air. Fortunately, I was reading a booklet on what to expect when one travels by air and it helped me a lot.
For whatever it's worth, travelling by plane is a good experience and lots of fun too. Before you fly, remember that there are literally millions of airplanes that take off and touch down in any given time all over the world and it is indeed an exciting experience.

maezee (4313) | 3 months ago | Thank you! It sounds like you're quite at ease with flying, and that's good to hear. The turbulence on our plane made me a little nervous, but other than that, all was well.

All I want to say to you is: be calm, relax, and if you got lucky enough to be near the window, just enjoy your view! No need to be afraid. Airplane is still the safest transport in the world. 9. themdno (153) | 3 months ago | Don't forget to bring gum! I didn't bring any, and my ears were killing me. Other than that, bring your iPod or something so you don't get bored. An hour trip isn't bad at all, but still if you bring some music or something, it will go by much quicker.
Oh, you might want to take dramamine, if you get motion sickness or anything like that. I don't need it when I fly, but I've known people who do.

10. kent_help2smile (1765) | 3 months ago | The things you need to know about taking an plane:
1. Be ahead of time. Because the seat you bought will be given to others. In short there's no seating arrangement in fact you bought that seat. I hate that! My advise to you is print a copy of your seat and tell it stewardess.
2. Don't bring liquid stuff it will be rejected.
So that's what I recall. And enjoy your trip!
