Another trip down memory lane

I was thinking about the "good old days" when gas was cheaper and I was younger and Austin wasn't as built up... There was a drive I liked to take sometimes, it didn't take us too far out of town, but it did take us out to the lake. By us, I mean my former roommate and I. We are talking the late 1970's. So we drove out along a country road, talking and looking at stuff and we came across a strange sight. There was this small pickup truck wedged on a cliff. Its left front fender was stuck on the side of the road and the right rear fender was wedged on the side of a small cliff. None of its wheels were touching the ground We stopped to see if we could help. They also had another car stop to try and help. They were pushing on the fender trying to get the truck dislodged. Now, I had a few weeks earlier dislocated my breast bone (don't ask) and the former roomie told me to get out of the way so if they did managed to get it loose, it wouldn't get me. To get well and truly out of the way, I climbed up the small cliff - well it wasn't straight up... I asked them HOW they managed to do this to their truck during a break. They told us that they were driving this dirt track that ran along, getting fainter and fainter until they arrived at this drop. It was only about 8 feet, and not straight down, and ended with the road, so rather than trying to back up, they decided to go forward off the drop. So, they started pushing again. I'm sitting there, not doing anything, looking at the truck and how its situated and thinking... I suddenly realize that I KNOW how to get the truck down, and that I could do it myself. I told them to stop, that I would get it down myself - they all looked at me like I'd lost my mind. The former roomie climbed up and wanted to know HOW I was going to do it. So, while the others were taking another rest, I explained what we needed to do. We slipped along the drop until we were sitting just above the rear fender, put our feet on the truck and pushed. It resisted for a moment and then it started sliding. A second later it was sitting on all 4 wheels once again. We kind of slid off after it. The couple who's truck it was were THRILLED. They were all amazed that it was so easy to solve, with just a little thought and some leg power. I was a hero that day, felt good. Have you ever been a hero for a day?

Good for you. I probably would have looked at it, gotten frustrated and given up!

well, I could tell they had the right idea - pushing the fender over until the wheels touched, but I got up there and realized that they were working AGAINST gravity and they should've been letting gravity work for them.

I think that there have been times when I tought I was a hero for a day. However it has been such a long time that I can't rember when that had occoured. mabey sometime when I was young or in high school. but I can't think of any recent occouces.

I don't get to do major things like that anymore, but I do little problem solving fairly often

Nothing as impressive as that, but My Ipod loving Brother's "music collection to go" went into Limbo when one day it went belly up..Problem solving in many areas says to start with the cheaper solutions first..I got a couple of compatible batteries on Ebay, swopped his out,and once the battery charged up,it was back to Normal! He was well pleased!

I'm sure your brother thought you very clever - not life threatening, but those music collects can be a PITA to put back together

That was awesome.. Truly a hero, alright. For me, I had come across a stranger in the middle of the road looking like he needed help. And true enough, he didn't have any phone to make a call because the battery's flat. I gave him my phone to make a call and he called the tow.

yeah, I loaned my phone for a moment to a fellow just Thursday - he was calling a buddy, not like his car was broken down, but still, getting some place and not finding anyone home is a pain all the same. Of course, this was back in the dark ages before there were even PC's much less cell phones - and EVEN if there had been, there would've been no coverage out there...

So we are same there. Might be a small help from us, but to them; it's like the help of the world, able to make that desired call. Good talking.. ;)

You were the hero for the day. I bet those people were glad to have met you...lol..I can't think of anything that I have done to make me a hero. I have helped a few people out but nothing like that.

I wonder if they even remember or think of the day some strange gal figured out how to get their truck off that?

I wonder, cause it sure doesn't make them look too bright when a couple of gals, one with a chest injury, could get it dislodged while 3 strong young men and a couple of young women couldn't. Remember, the former roomie climbed up, but she had been pushing before..

Well, that was a surprise ending. Yes, I was a hero for a day. My hearing (when I'm not having allergies) is normally better than everyone elses. So I could hear a muffled scream (that no one else could hear when I worked as a C. O. in County Corrections), but couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Made a quick run around the section of the jail I was in (people thought I was crazy), until I found three teens in a cell, two beating up on one. Who knows what they wanted to do to him since he wasn't talking, too scared to, but he would have been more than black and blue in the face if I hadn't gotten there. Hero for the day.

I wish it was still country side out there by the lake, but not any more, I haven't been out that way in ages because I just want to keep my memories of it being all wild I'm sure you are someone's hero, you may just not know it

Wow Elic, good on you! You are a smart cookie! I can’t say I have ever saved the day like you did, it goes to show that if you take a moment to step back and analyse the situation the answer can just come to you. Maybe that is a life lesson; that we should all slow down take a step back and that is when miracles will happen! You must feel so proud and so you should!

and people, honestly, especially the former roommate, are wanting me make quick decisions, and that's when you push on the front fender and not get anywhere...
