So the Peter, Paul and Mary CD was still in the car this morning. Immediately Dearra complains, "do we have to listen to this?" So I changed it to the Broadway station.
A song from the musical Ragtime, which I really like, was playing, but I wasn't to crazy about this son, so I changed it to the Sinatra station.
Johnny Mathis was on there singing Small World from the musical Gypsy. After a few verses, Dearra points out that he keeps using the word "funny". So I told her that he didn't write the song, he's just the singer. She replies back that maybe he was the songwriter too. So I said "no, it was written by Jule Styne and the singer is Johnny Mathis". She gives me "the look" and suggests that perhaps they're the same person. So I pointed out that Mathis is black and Styne is while. At which point she gives me the "why are you such a frickin know it all" look and suggests that perhaps Mathis has the same skin condition as Michael Jackson. Which is when I point out (while laughing) that Mathis is alive and Styne is dead. So she finally gives up arguing with me.
After that, a Sinatra song came on and I told her that I had a funny story about him. A friend of my parents had died back when they were living in their Westchester house and a mutual friend of theirs was giving a memorial service at her house. She was a bridge player (as were my parents and the friend who had died), but her husband had been a record producer and he had produced two of Frank Sinatra's records back in the 1950's. We were looking at the gold records on the wall when she pulled out a book that she thought we'd like to see. The title was something like "100 Things People Like About Frank Sinatra". So we opened the book and all the pages were blank. Dearra thought that was pretty funny.
She has a surprise coming tomorrow morning though. I went to put the PP&M CD away and put in the Beatles, and discovered that there was a second CD. So there are new and exciting delights awaiting her trip to school tomorrow. (evil grin)

You are so naughty! But at least you are exposing them to the older music and hopefully it will stay alive! I remember my mom playing Guy Lombardo....and I thought I was going to throw up.....I vowed I would never have his music in my house......LOL.....two years ago I bought a cd of his! Dang it all!

I don't have any of his, but I do have quite a few from that era!

I wonder what Dearra's response would be to "Catch a Falling Star and put it in your pocket; save it for a rainy day"? I think her favourite word would be heard "That's stupid!"
What fun times you have in the car. Thanks for sharing them.

Just like my sons did to me - but at least one of them plays that song today, even though they teased me for years! I was amazed when I heard it.

She'd probably give me a dissertation about how that's impossible. :-)

Now I'm curious, did you find this second disk in the PPandM case, well deserving of the aforementioned  Dawns can be naughty fun...

I was putting the first disk away when I saw the second disk shining through the plastic. Made me very happy. The kids, not so much. :-)

It's really hard to stay ahead of your kids, enjoy it while you can it's short lived.
Not only do they get ahead but until they have children of their own they stay ahead, then it's like magic, over night, after the first babe is born you become smart again. Enjoy

Hi, D!
It sounds like good fun! One of these days, she'll like at least some of those songs! It's just not cool to like such things when they're old and you're young!

I'm just theorizing here that he may have been a wee bit difficult to work with...
Yep, Dearra is a smart cookie, her brother and sister too.

I love hearing about your car trips with your kids! So Dearra is twelve and very wise? My little one is almost eight and already gives me ‘the look’ on a regular basis; it includes the eyes rolling upwards.
I love the Johnny Mathis and Jule Styne argument, they’ve got to know better and be right don’t they? (LOL)
You have a good way of exposing your children to ‘real’ music...Can't wait to hear about the next trip...
