Sometimes children are smarter than we are, funnier too...

This morning Dearra asked me how much soldiers get paid. I told her, "not all that much." She was outraged. "Why? They fight and put their lives on the line." "I don't know, I just know it's relatively low." "Well, they should get paid as much as the President." Kids are smart. Then we're driving to school and there's the usual running commentary about the musical selection, which is still Peter, Paul and Mary. Puff the Magic Dragon was playing. Dearra says, "what a dumb name, Puff. Of course he puffs. He's a dragon." So I said, "they could have named him Huff." Naomi says, "yeah so he can huff and puff and blow the house down?" I said, "no so he can huff and puff and burn the house down." Eye rolls all around... Next song was 500 miles. "Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two, Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four, Lord I'm 500 miles from my home." And Dearra wants to know what's with the infantile counting thing. So I told her, "they're counting the miles." "Yes, but what are they saying before that?" "Lord I'm"... "What kind of word is that? What does that mean?" "They're talking to God." "Huh?" "Lord is..." Loud interruption, "Ohhhhhh, Lord, I thought it was some kind of German word." "No, Dearra it's two English words, Lord and I'm... As opposed to Lore Dime"... This followed by other possible combinations until the next song started. Then we got to the next song, Stewball. "Mom, why is it called Stewball?" "That's the horses name." "Why would somebody name a horse something like that?" "I don't know, maybe it's a reminder of where he'll end up if he doesn't win." More eye rolls. This Peter, Paul and Mary stuff could keep us entertained for a long, long time...

Stewball is a corruption of the word Skewball - found a you tube with the explanation of the name - surprise your little critic with this info... "originated in either England or Ireland, where it began as "Skewball", meaning a horse with white patches on a coat that is not black" I always guessed the name came from the color - I used to ride a skewball paint, he was a bay with white patches - that means he had black mane and tail and his lower legs, then the rest of his body was was a dark red brown. A pinto with black body and white spots is called a "pieball" ones with 3 colors are called tricolored

I'm like #1 or 2 in horses, so you would expect me to know things like that...

She is either going to find that really interesting or she is going to roll her eyes and say "whatever". :-) Thanks for the info!

Thats great, what a bright little family you have there! My nephew is hilarious - he is five and he will ramble on for ages if you let him. He has just discovered jokes (sadly taking after his father, my brothers, terrible ones!) and is forever saying 'did you hear the one about'..... The jokes completely don't make sense and they then turn into stories 'he was this...and then he turned into a penguin - and then he turned into a truck....and it fell on this person and then said....' and so it goes on.... He recently got a school report and it said he asks a lot of questions! I bet he keeps them on their toes. And I quite agree that soldiers should get paid more - a wise little girl there.

When my kids were first into jokes they tried to make them up and it was funny how odd they came out. My girls can yap pretty nonstop too and their brother will go on and on about Star Wars and Wizard 101...

. . . . . and keep us entertained too! Thanks Dawn. I think I've said it before: Dearra is a Dawn in the making, so hope remains for future generations. Driving the kids to school must be the highlight of your day and theirs. Soldiers should be paid more, but just imagine the tax bill if they were paid as much as the President! Is that a good reason to LOWER the President's pay?

Despite not being a morning person, mornings are the highlight of my weekday because of the kids... And you couldn't lower the President's salary enough to make it up to the soldiers, unfortunately!

Well I never have seen the possibilities in the entertainment value of Peter Paul and Mary the way your family is getting from it! I just thought they were good singers! LOL

i agree with you. my younger cousins are more intelligent than me. they're into math competitions. when i was in their age i was just a plain student. i think children now are more sophisticated than we do.

Mine are pretty innocent compared to some children and I'd kind of like to keep them that way!!!
