Religion is the opium of the masses. Do you agree? | | I feel that religion and God are two different concepts. Many are confused and merge the concept of God with religion. We can't blame the masses for this confusion, because those who are advocates of a religion, normally make it a tool to manipulate the masses to their way of thinking. With the idea of God infused into the said religion, it can become a very powerful tool to stir the masses.

While things are changing slowly, especially in the western world, religious leaders still wield a lot of power, far too much power,to my way of thinking. You refer to religion as the opium of the masses and you have a point. While I don't think that we should deny anyone the comfort that belief often brings, I don't agree with the way it's being done. When I see pensioners who don't have enough money to live on in the first place, sending money to TV evangelists to help keep their programs on the air,it's just too much for me. Religions should be helping the poor among them, not taking money from them. Elderly abuse and child abuse are turning more ans more people from religion but I hope to see changes more then elimination. If religions would agree to respect each others beliefs and stop trying to make converts, it would be a great beginning, but only a beginning. Blessings.

shobhan51 (113) | 2 months ago | Thanks for your comment, Pose123. It is a great eye opener for those who are religious but not spiritual. Yes, you are absolutely right about religious leaders wielding immense power......power that can be used to steer large masses of religious fanatics to the whims and fancies of the religious leaders. Have you watched 'Jesus of Nazareth'? Why was Jesus crucified? What about Galilei Galileo and his belief that the Earth went round the Sun and not that the Sun went round the Earth as proclaimed by the powerful clergy? What happened to these two GREAT MEN? One died on the cross while the other was imprisoned for life...... both cases were the result of the practise of religion of the day!!!!! Jesus was a spiritual leader NOT A RELIGIOUS LEADER while GALILEI GALILEO WAS A SCIENTIST. I hope I have opened the way for more criticisms from bloggers in cyber world now...

I used to be religious in the usually accepted way, but I found that religion is a curse and the cause of much trouble in the world.
When I became a Christian I stopped being religious. My life changed completely. Religion is creeds in the head, and Christianity is Christ in the life - a relationship.

shobhan51 (113) | 2 months ago | Thanks cloudwatcher, great thinking!!!! You are bringing home a very good point on what is being spiritual and religious. There is definitely a vast difference. No man who is spiritual will ever hurt or destroy anything that is precious to life. For Christ even a sinner has to be given a chance to turn his life about. Jesus preached LOVE NOT HATE... Some religious leaders preach hatred and intolerance which can lead to chaos and disharmony!!! This is because these religious leaders are blinded by ego and self importance.

So far, man have created several attempts and each claim that their own system of belief is the right and true one. This results to fanaticism and put up dividing walls between people.
Yes, religion and God are not synonymous. The good thing is a person can be spiritual and not exactly religious. I find my life in my belief in God and I don't call my self religious. It's more of a relationship with God.

shobhan51 (113) | 2 months ago | Thank you. Yes, a believe in God and a relationship with God is unique with individuals. My relationship with God makes me bond with God in a way that is different from the way you bond with God. We learn different lessons in these relationships and become aware of our shortcomings and our mistakes. In this way we are learning directly from our maker and creator. My believe is that as long as we are morally and ethically conscious of our behaviour and actions while listening to the inner voice the world will have no problems with us.

I have been trying to explain this to many followers of religion for the longest time and I always get arguments and negativity from them. To me, if you follow your religion, you are letting another MAN tell you how to live and what and what not to do. These people can change you and make you think a totally different way. My Aunt helps me understand the bible and read it, that is all I do. I remember to ask for forgiveness of my sins as well and work my hardest to not commit then again. Religion is tradition, God is God. Two different things.

shobhan51 (113) | 2 months ago | For many years, I have been trying to understand religions and God. I wanted to know why are there so many religions but the basic principles underlying all religions are the same. If that were the case, all religions are actually branching from ONE BASIC CODE OF BEHAVIOUR AND INTERACTION rooting from the moral and ethical values. Where is the difference? It lay in the rituals, the culture, the traditions, the civilisation and the EGO from which it first rooted.

| | | | 7. 1hopefulman (1347) | 3 weeks ago | ”Religion is the opium of the people,” so stated Karl Marx!
I like to categorize religion in these terms: true religion and false religion.
True religion: elevates man, brings man closer to God, and is beneficial for mankind.
False religion: enslaves mankind to darkness, promotes evil, and is disgusting to God.
Like many other things, as an example money, religion can be used for good or for evil.
I would say that Jesus Christ was the best example of using religion aright. He is the model that I try to follow.

shobhan51 (113) | 3 weeks ago | Thanks 1hopefulman, for your response. I remembered this statement which was given as a topic for debate in my school days and decided to open it here in mylot for comments. What you have just stated about true and false religions can be applied to any philosophy that has positive or negative impact on the masses. Even certain countries that practise unequal treatment of different communities can be categorised as practising false religion. Do you agree?

1hopefulman (1347) | 3 weeks ago | If I understand Jesus' teachings correctly, then doing good to our neighbour (the good Sammaritan) is practicing true religion. Also,
John 8:31 (New International Version) "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples."
It seems that the religion we belong to or the country we live in is not the criteria. It's what we individually do. With God we have individual accountability. (Please read Ezekiel chapter 33) Of course finding a religion where there are many people, all striving to follow Jesus would be encouraging to us.
