while looking around for figures for another discussion i came across the latest theory about what was the ancestor of all living things. and it could well have been a rock (rather than a cell). possibly it will never be proven one way or the other but assuming that your family tree ends up with a stone at the beginning what kind of stone do you think your particular family comes from - grey granite, crumbling sandstone, what?

Well, I don't know about being descended from a rock, but I seem to remember most of the men on my father's side of the family getting stoned on a regular basis! I think we were probably descended from granite, because we've taken a few hard knocks over the years, but we're still here with no outward signs of distress.

Can I go to Dartmoor instead? That's granite as well, and it's prettier, with ponies and sheep and things.

'scientists' do need to bring about new theories just to keep their salaries coming. i bet that now they are wondering where these rocks came from....i will wait till they find out that before jumping to conclusions.....after all if we start believing that and end it there...the poor scientists will be out of job....btw - just for the sake of assumption.....it would be diamonds....

Just come across this so I'm a bit late to the party, but here's my contribution. Since my ancestors were coal miners from way back I suppose that a lump of coal was the founding father

hi jb blue bunny okay perhaps my gr gr granddad was a gorgeous
crystal all bright and shiny inside this large rock egg that burst open and spewed out all these gorgeous crystals that shone all red, blue, green, and purple. wow, well it could have happened with enough poetic license ? okay? There really is a name for this egg shaped rock that is hollow with all these gorgeous crystals in them but in my senior moment the name has escaped my mind.

I'm pretty sure it was either a ruby or a sapphire. :-)

Wasn't Richard the Lionheart gay? How'd he get descendants? OK...don't tell me, I really don't want to know.
I don't believe I'm descended from rocks...lol. Maybe some red clay is there in the dim past...but not rocks.
I don't know about these scientists...they keep changing their mind. Back in fifth grade they told me that LIFE begets LIFE. And they were pretty sure about that. Oh well....
