Tanstaafl email this discussion to a friend?

No, I'm not starting to write in a different language LOL
It just came to mind the other day and decided to use it as my signature in my email because I believe in it and think we should keep it in mind. And then suddenly everyone was asking me what I meant.
It does sound a bit cryptic I confess, but it is quite a simple idea that is good to remember - in my opinion -.
It's a truth that people often prefer to disregard. We are all hopefuls at heart:)
I first read it in a science fiction book, when I still was still kind of young to have learned it by experience. But it made sense immediately.
It simply means: There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch.
There really isn't. But I see people believing in it all the time, specially online - but not only, of course.
Without going into deeper areas of this concept, let me remind all of you:If you didn't buy that lottery ticket, believe me you did not win it no matter how many emails say you did.
There is no rich lady in some country wanting to share her fortune with you just because.
That gift you got online is not free. You paid for it in one or more of many different ways - by registering somewhere, by ( hopefully not ) giving your info, address, and phone number, by paying for something else, by spamming all your friends to join you, etc. etc. etc.-.
The sale price you paid for that special item that was on special only one day which was what urged you to buy it, could have been bough by less somewhere else. And it was marked higher just before the sale so it could be brought down - to it's regular price - for the sale.
That voucher you got for a free dinner requires that you pay double for another entree in order to be used, and you need to pay for your drinks - that are priced higher too.
The free weekend vacation you won out of the blue, is a trap to get you to listen to a 3 hour selling something or other seminar, and they will be quite aggressive in their sales pitch.
Those improvements in your favorite store that were made "for your convenience" are actually something that was done for their own convenience and you will pay for it somehow.
That nice new park they made in your neighborhood, was paid by your taxes and was only built because it suited or brought something to someone, not necessarily you ( most probably not you )
I suppose that by now you're getting the idea:)
So, my friend, believe it: Tanstaafl:)
Or do you still believe in free lunch?

Yes, isn't it amazing how many people actually think they must be polite and listen to some of these pitches? If people would only think things through, they would be harder to fool.

...Although I did get a lovely pair of Gloria Vanderbuilt jeans for $3.85 the other day. The catch? They were 8 sizes too large so I cut through the side seams and "took them in" as we used to say. They turned out beautiful and I did see the same pair for "sale" at "only" $25 elsewhere. It took me about 20 minutes to do the alteration.

Hello, my friend:)
It is amazing, isn't it?
Of course there are exceptions, but those are not the rule LOL
And things like your jeans.... turns out they were almost "free lunch" but not completely, since you did have to work for it anyways, which is the idea. We sure can get some things if we work for them which makes them not exactly free, but nice enough:)

- been away for quite awhile again, but hope to be back more now. Have a great weekend:)

About two years ago, a friend of mine here posted that her son's school had given a "free" lunch for the parents. I quoted tanstaafl to her and explained that she paid for gas to drive there, it cost time from other things and so on.

Heinlein is one of my favorite Sci-Fi writers. thumbup

Heinlen is one of my favorites too:)One of the best.Have most of all his books and re-read them every once in a while. One of my favorites is Job: A comedy of justice:)
But even without him, I guess as I grew up I would reach the same conclusion, tanstaafl LOL

If there is a "free lunch" being given, and it is of no cost to you, it has definitely cost someone else something. It still is not free.

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5728)   ranked 186 out of 480 in reader  3 months ago

It always costs someone something, but more often than not, it costs us something. That's the way it goes, and it works just as well for things that cost money to things that don't - a favor, a secret.... anything costs something, always.
I can understand children not understanding this, but it's more complicated when it comes to adults that still believe in "free lunch" LOL
Hope you're having a great weekend:)

That is a good one arkf61!
There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch!

Very catch indeed. And one that is a good reminder to ourselves.
Heh heh... I have not heard that phase in a L-o-n-g time.
Thanks for reminding me. And a very good signature too! thumbup
