To Run a Marathon or Not to Run a Marathon? email this discussion to a friend?

That is the question!

I am crazy enough to consider running a marathon in March. Talk me into or out of this!!

I've been running since June but so far the longest distance I can run without stopping is just shy of 5 miles (4.8). There is a training program though and my fitness has been increasing. So should I do it, or is that just crazy?

I say go for it! If you think you can do it, then do it!! I love to run. But am entirely new to it. Have you run a 5k yet? If you haven't, maybe start there and work your way up! I'm totally jealous that you can run for that long! You just motivated me to get up off my butt and get back on my treadmill....tomorrow.. lol

myLot reputation of 89/100. Pigglies (4983)   ranked 1 out of 72 in running  4 weeks ago

Thanks! I've run two 5Ks now, and I'll be running a 3rd one this weekend! I've also got a 10K coming up next month. And then a half marathon early next year. But I can't decide if I would make it on a marathon. Maybe I should see how I feel after a 10K first. But I guess for the marathon you have to sign up several months in advance.

I'm glad to have motivated someone, lol. I'll be running tomorrow too, but at the track since I don't have a treadmill. You'll be amazed with running how quickly you improve, especially on endurance. My speed is getting better too, but the endurance is really amazing to me. At first I couldn't even run one mile without stopping to walk. Then 6 weeks after I started training I was able to run an entire 5K (which I swore at the time nearly killed me). And then several weeks later I ran another 5K that didn't nearly kill me. And I'm hoping the next 5K I'll be able to break the 30 minute time barrier.

myLot reputation of 71/100. menolly22 (120)  2 weeks ago

That's awesome. How about signing up for the marathon and if you feel you can't do it after the 10k then just cancel it? Unless your going to be out a large sum of money of course. Then, why not just try it? It can't hurt and the only thing that could happen is that you don't finish it. I know I know, that does sting the pride a tad when that happens! lol Good luck to you!

myLot reputation of 89/100. Pigglies (4983)   ranked 1 out of 72 in running  2 weeks ago

It's $150. So I don't want to have to cancel or end up not finishing if I can avoid it. I think I'll still wait until after the 10K to sign up and just hope the registration isn't closed by then.

myLot reputation of 71/100. menolly22 (120)  1 week ago

Ya, $150 is a bit much to cancel out on! Good luck to you!

Are there any other marathons in the area about the same time that you don't have to commit to so early?
We have numerous marathons here. I'm aiming for a half in the spring. I originally wanted to do one in Dec. but have learned that due to hubby's scheduling I can no longer run outside. It gets dark too early and stays dark too late in the mornings for me to feel safe enough to get out there. I just got a treadmill and am learning how to run on it. All this adjusting is killing my desire to actually "train" for a race.
I'd aim for the marathon but I wouldn't commit to one at this time if I were you.
I've run 6 miles twice now and such a distance brings with it many other questions on training...not just the running aspect.
such as how will I handle bathroom stops? what if I need to go when there is no potty near by because that is bound to happen to me!!
What about energy. I personally don't wanna take those energy gels so many talk about and I'd have to be sure to figure out what combination of raisins, oats, chia or what not I would need to get me through.
My next question would be dress. Shoes are my biggest. I have yet to find one that I'm willing to run such a distance in. My next purchase will be some racing flats. I'm looking at the mizuno universe 3's but still not sure...and I need to sell my Vibram five fingers to fund my mizuno's. After shoes comes the socks...I think I have that one set, IF I wear socks. Then I need to tackle running clothes. It's funny but I hate running in any kind of pants, and I hate sleeves on my arms. BUT I can't let myself get too cold. I'm just too darn picky with clothes and comfort.

I say go for the training though. Just sign up for the marathon at the last possible minute. I can't wait to run my half in the spring.

A lot of the marathons around here that you don't have to commit to are very hilly. So I won't be in shape to run one of those for sure. But I think I'll keep waiting until the last possible minute to decide on this one. Because first I want to see how the 10K goes at least. And then I'd like to see how I feel after maybe a 10 mile run or something.

Some of those energy foods aren't bad. The Clif Shot Blocks actually taste surprisingly good. Like fruit snacks almost, but bigger. But I know what you mean, energy food generally scares me! And bathroom stops too, because I usually have to pee right before and right after a 5K. So imagine a marathon? LOL

I definitely know what you mean about the clothes. I finally got some pants and I'll see how those are. So far they're bad but it wasn't cold enough to give them a fair chance. I hate sleeves too and I like to be comfortable. And none of my current shoes would be comfortable that long because my feet are giant and go right to the end. I need to find some place to buy shoes in size 10.5 probably.

Go For It!!!It is in March. You have Plenty of time to train. And maybe you can convince some of your friends to run with you.You love running.Marathons are the next step.Don't be afraid. It will be fun!

myLot reputation of 89/100. Pigglies (4983)   ranked 1 out of 72 in running  4 weeks ago

You are so motivational! I'm a little less afraid because I see that the girls at work who ran after 6 months of training were actually pretty slow back then (around 6 hours). Now they run much faster, but the marathon didn't kill them back then. So I figure if they could do it, I could do it. Considering I'll have been running for 9 months by then. I'm hoping I could finish in 5 hours.

Oh, I just got some new shoes too! I'm hoping they'll help with foot pain issues so that I can do longer runs.

Great!Tell me how the shoes workout.

i have already training for it now, and it is also my frist time to join the Marathon, my friend who had run it two times tells me that it is not as hard as people think if you keep on training, so i decide to have a try, now i run 8-10 kilometers everynight before i sleep. i see there are many very old men also join it . so just go for it if you want

myLot reputation of 89/100. Pigglies (4983)   ranked 1 out of 72 in running  1 week ago

That's what I've heard, it's not too impossible if you train for it. I'm worried about all the training though and if I would make it. But I guess I probably could do it, just trying to figure out if I could come out with a semi-respectable finishing time.

I'm also considering a marathon in March. I downloaded the training program from marathonrookie.com which is a 16 week training program. It has it's longest run at 20 miles though I'd be able to complete this training exactly at the time of a local marathon. It's $70 to enter though and just not so sure I'll be ready for that. Lets marathon train together:)

myLot reputation of 89/100. Pigglies (4983)   ranked 1 out of 72 in running  4 days ago

Yeah, I'll be doing a 16 week training program too. I'm downloading mine from RunnersWorld as soon as I complete the 10K so that I have a longer race time to base it off of. If I base it off the 5K, I think my training plan wants me to meet paces that are too fast for those distances. It thinks I could finish a marathon in 4 hours and 30 minutes. I'm not so sure about that.

If the marathon here was $70, I'd probably go for that for sure. The half I entered I think was $95. The marathon is only 6 weeks after my half.

But I'm thinking I'm going to do it!

I'll be running with you on the 26th in spirit. it'll be my 6 mile week.
