Consider - you are at supper and everyone at the next table is drinking |
|
I unfortunately see this more than you think. I go into a restaurant and at the table next to me every person is drinking alcohol. It really bothers me. I want to know who is driving home. I find that it usually happens at tables with all adults - like 40 years old and older. I get very angry that they put everyone else's life in jeopardy in order for them all to have alcohol with dinner. Even worse is when they are all really drunk. What do you do when you see this situation? Is it right to do nothing?

1. jb78000 (1788) | 2 months ago | some people take taxis. of course you could go and say your piece but i doubt you'd get an amicable response. just make sure your own friends (and you...)do not do this.

wlee9696 (382) | 2 months ago | I do wonder sometimes if they are taking a taxi. I don't approach them because I don't want a confrontation - and that is about all you would get by pointing out to a group of people that they are committing a social faux pas. If they are all really in the cups - as evidenced by loud behavior and slurred words - I call the non emergency number for the highway patrol and report the incident to them. I have no idea whether or not they follow up. I have sometimes wondered if I should appeal to the management of the restaurant - since they willingly sold them all alcohol. I just don't know..... We don't drink - but many of our friends do so we always - an I mean always have a designated driver.

2. rusty2rusty (4201) | 2 months ago | When someone is really drunk, I believe the resturant has a responsibility o get the parton a ride home. As they did not cut them off when the should have.
Seeing someone have one drink with a mel does not bother me. As most people don't get drunk with one drink.

wlee9696 (382) | 2 months ago | I agree most people do not get drunk with one drink. That's another reason why I don't necessarily interfere. You can generally tell who is "drunk" vs. who had a drink. But how man drinks is too many?

3. linamachina (257) | 2 months ago | Hi Wlee9696, I can understand your concern for your own safety and of others when you witness such an occasion. I think however, not knowing the situation of the group, whether they have made other arrangements, perhaps they are walking, maybe there is one in the group who is naturally loud and is the designated driver who is not drinking but may appear to be due to their natural personality, it would be difficult to approach the group to inquire. Many would be a bit put off by the well-intentions and consider it an intrusion. There was a story that I heard from a friend that was at a restaurant with a group of friends. They were loud and having such a great time, their actions were of a group that appeared to be imbibing. Another diner concerned asked the manager about them and said I think you should cut them off. The manager said, well, this group comes every Friday night and I don't think its necessary. The diner was offended and said oh your bottom lines are more important than the safety of everyone else here. The manager said, no this group comes here after their AA meeting, even though there is a bar here they come for the food and to talk some more. I don't think I need to cut them off. So, I think its important to be safe but not knowing what is going on in the group makes it difficult to act. I think I would make sure that I left before they did if I felt that they truly were a danger.

wlee9696 (382) | 2 months ago | I don't think personally approaching the group would ever be a good idea whether they were drunk or not. But I feel you do have a responsibility to society to be sure that obviously unsafe conditions - ie drunk people on the road - are reported to the proper authorities. Now I don't go around reporting every group - in fact I"ve only called the police a couple of times. But I always wonder about the times I don't call, and I never know if the police actually do anything.

4. LadyMarissa (2714) | 2 months ago | The one that upset me the most was when I was out to eat & the table next to me was ALL cops. The drunker they got the mouthier they became. One in particular...bragging about the smart asss drunks he had stopped for DUIs & the stupid drug addicts he had busted. Then he complained about the time he had to spend in court to prosecute them. They got louder & louder & mouthier & mouthier. Finally, the owner asked them to leave. The mouthiest of the bunch jumped in the owner's face threatening to arrest him if he ever saw him out of the restaurant. Yes, they were ALL off duty, but they were driving their official cars. They were drunker than ANYBODY else in the restaurant. They knew they were safe as who was going to arrest them??? I've thought about starting my own designated driver business, but I fear being hurt by a drunk!!!

5. coolcoder (1582) | 2 months ago | Why is it your business, anyway? They're all adults, they know the risks, and there's nothing that says that they can't have alcohol with their dinner, whether you like that fact or not. You can't just go over there and scold them like some nanny would scold a bad child; all they'll do is tell you to go to h*ll. You might go over to a waitress or the manager of the restaurant and discreetly say something about your concern, but other than that, it's not your place to demand that they stop drinking their alcohol right that instant.

wlee9696 (382) | 2 months ago | It is my business when they leave that restaurant and get on the highway. It could me or my children they kill. It could be you and your children they kill. That makes it my business. However I don't advocate approaching a table full of drunks. Not to mention why should my dinner be ruined by having to listen to a table full of loud drunks. Failure to act in order to protect people from other people's behaviors - only when it puts the general public at risk - makes the person who failed to act almost as guilty as the drunk drivers.

6. thea09 (4660) | 2 months ago | Hi wlee, well I have to say its usually the case overhere that everyone is drinking and driving home afterwards even if it's only round the corner, its just something they've always done. But then they don't tend to become obnoxious when they drink but are just enjoying themselves, and they invariably drink wine with food.
What worries me is the Brits who do it during the day and then drive home barely able to stand. I've never once heard of one of them being stopped for it and they are consuming vast amounts of alcohol without food from the morning on, and there are other drivers on the roads at that time.
If they did get stopped and breathalysed the fines are huge. The only person I've ever heard of being stopped and breathalysed though is The Greek, ie mine, when he was driving the long way back from here and passed through town at about 6am. And he doesn't drink at all. So all I can hope is that a Brit does get randomnly stopped to maybe frighten the rest of them into stopping. If they want to drink all day they'd be better off just sitting at home doing it and then they wouldn't get such a bad reputation too.

thea09 (4660) | 2 months ago | I forgot to add we have almost weekly deaths or terrible maimings on the roads locally but its not at night from the Greeks driving after wine, its usually due to reckless overtaking on the roads. Last Saturday I witnessed a rather nasty one as 4 people were being cut out of the car by the fire brigade after a head on collision.

8. gunagohan (897) | 2 months ago | you should not consider them and should never exchange words with them, untill they disturb you...and most of the restaurants, they will be having centralized conditioners and the sprays will be sprayed all time and the smell of alcohol will not disturb others, it will be completely wiped off...then their later situation, most of the people will be having their own cars and drivers, so it doesn't matter, their drivers will be driving them home safely..if not they will take a taxi... in some places, the hotel officials will not allow the person who is drunk to drive, they will arrange a driver...rare cases occur on drunk and drive...
