I saw myself in the newspaper today... |
|
Well, I saw myself as a child anyway.
There was an article about Asperger Syndrome and PDD and how there was talk of eliminating those two designations and calling all of them Autism spectrum disorder. Which I'm not qualified to judge, haven't formed an opinion about yet and isn't the topic of this discussion anyway.
One of the things that was said about people with Asperger's is that from a very young age they can be socially and physically awkward, form very complex sentences at an early age and be reading the newspaper at age 5 or 6.
Socially awkward - that's me to a T Physically awkward - hm, well I was running at 8 months, but I know I was (am?) clumsy Complex sentences - well my mom documented my first sentence at about 15 months Reading the newspaper - don't know about that, but I was reading at 4 years of age
The reason this struck me is that I have never seen those last two things when reading about Asperger syndrome. Maybe it's because I've been reading more about Asperger's in adults who weren't diagnosed at a young age and about Asperger's and relationships. But anyway, those four things describe me pretty well, I think.
Did you ever read something in the paper and say, "that's me"?

1. savypat (7780) | 2 months ago | No I have never done that, but reading what you wrote makes me wonder about myself, I spoke complex sentences early and read dby age 3.5 yrs. I've always felt socially and physically awkward. But I have never be told I had anything other then a high IQ. Blessings

dawnald (10056) | 2 months ago | I never have either. But I read a book earlier this year that was written by a man with Asperger's and there were so many things that sounded like me. I have never pursued a diagnosis, but I do think there is a likelihood that I have mild Asperger's or at least something that resembles it.

dawnald (10056) | 2 months ago | Interesting, I was also tested as reading two years ahead of my age. I only got skipped half a year (LA Unified used to have a February schedule in addition to a September scheduled), but perhaps that was because I wasn't so strong in math.

6. Skyeblue25 (194) | 2 months ago | I have never read something in the newspaper and thought thats me, but since I suspected my son had autism, I have read up and researched it thoroughly and to this day I still think its me.
I wouldn't say I was severe as my son but I have many autistic traits. I am extremely socially awkward. At school I was very forward for my age, but lacked the concentration levels to succeed. There are more, I could read at a very young age and I was also early at speaking. But I too am clumsy.
The more I research the more I believe I am somewhere on the autistic spectrum. It is very possible as they say there are genetic links so maybe my son got his autism through me.

7. cloudwatcher (3481) | 2 months ago | I can't say I've ever read something in the newspaper that was "me" - but several times I have read discussions here and have been amazed at the similarities. I have come to think the old saying that there is nothing new in life might have some truth.
It is surprising how many people here had childhoods with similarities to mine. I haven't come across anyone with a "Frank" in their lives. I'm convinced there couldn't be another one as evil as he, thankfully, but there are many comparisons with other abuses.
I possibly also fit in with those points on Aspergers. I certainly had no help at home, so it wasn't due to home education that I was always waaaaaay ahead of the rest at school. I am very socially clumsy but I've always ascribed that to my early years of solitude. I've lived 73 years without knowing so I guess I have no need now. I'll just keep going the way I am.

9. jillhill (11735) | 2 months ago | Only when I have read a horoscope......and it says exactly what has happened or discribes my life exactly! I don't really believe in them but it's fun to read them and see how close they get.....I didn't know you had Asperger Syndrome.....

|
dawnald (10056) | 2 months ago | Once in a while a horoscope fits me exactly. I remember the funny one I got, Capricorn, said something like this:
You are conservative and afraid of taking risks. You don't do much of anything and are lazy. There has never been a Capricorn of any importance. Capricorns should avoid standing still too long as you may grow roots and turn into a tree.
I don't know that I have Aspergers either, I just suspect that I do.
