Why do people refer to GOD as a HE?

I refer to God as He because He is the best description that I can address Him. I can't refer to God as she because God is not a woman. I will never refer to God as it because God is not a thing but God created those things and man for Himself. I have not read in the Bible that God is referred to as she or her. I am just glad that Jesus Christ is my Savior and Lord and is enough for me. Whatever questions I may have, I can ask God when I reach heaven...

You need to read Matthew 1:23, it will tell you GOd is a He, when you read this I want a response from you, that God is a He, not a she, Mary had a Son not a daughter, you will not read in the Bible that Mary had a girl.

I think god is a man because didn't he say u can call me father somewere in the bible?
And because jesus always called him father, and jesus is his son isn't he?

when I refer to Gods, there is male and female.

I have a Mother Goddess and a Father God.


after all, this is far more logical than one being of one gender creating life alone.

Hi tambrerocks, God has always been referred to as he because for as long as we have recorded history, males have always been considered superior to females. Women didn't even have the right to vote a hundred years ago, they were considered a man's property. How could anyone think of God as a female when people thought that way? The Christian church fought against women's rights for centuries and even today some church won't allow a woman to be a priest or minister. God can never be referred to as she as long as men are in charge. Women have gained most of the rights they have today in the last fifty years. God is not a person and is therefore neither male nor female. The Bible and other holy books were written by men and of course, God has to be a male, a great warrior is the way many thought four or five thousand years ago because they thought of the greatest men as warriors. I think of God as Universal mind which has no need to be worshipped and shows no favourites. There have been great leaders who realized this and tried to teach it, but were misunderstood and sometimes worshipped as a God themselves after their death. Such people taught us how to live, treat others the way that you want to be treated is probably the best known one but some put in different words. We are here to live this life right now and to treat others the way we want them to treat us. Our life itself is a prayer and we need no other. If we lived this way, there would be no wars, no poverty, no homeless people and no need for prisons. God, the universal mind is spirit and we are all one with that mind, yet each of us is an individual while at the same time being part of the whole. We lived before coming here and will continue to live, either to return to this planet or move to another plane. I believe in spiritual evolution but it is impossible to understand all things here. Sorry for such a long response but I wanted to explain in as much detail as possible my concept of God. I will close by saying that neither I nor anyone else can prove anything about life after death, we can only have opinions. Blessings.

Because most religions are run by males, and it is considered taboo to think God is a woman. Women are not meant to rule over man, in any religion, that I know of. You are lucky if you are considered equal

I refer God as He because it has always been done. It! doesn't sound right. Gender is a parameter of this physical world. If you weren't in your physical body, gender would mean nothing. God has no gender either. This is something for people to realize, especially in religions. They do tend to make women second class. Men and women are equal in God's eyes. To be any different is just that man has been trying to control women since the beginning of time.

Not that I believe in personal Gods but it looks like their creators (read makers of the concerned religions) were mostly masculine and were chauvinists.

Also, you could argue that they are done so out of convention.

I refer to my God, the Absolute Consciousness as 'It'. Not the obvious but I feel my God is more like energy or force.

The Word 'HE' is used in two cases, when the gender is male or when there is no specific gender, or gender unknown. The word 'HE' normally take precedence over 'she' in general usage as a general linguistic rule.

God has no gender, and He is used as a general word, it doesn't mean he is a male.

Since God has no gender and we have to use either He/She, so in general HE is used.

'It' is used for objects or non-living objects, God is not an object and he is ever living.

Also some places you can see 'WE' to denote God. That doesn't mean God is a family or many people. That is called a Royal usage; 'Royal We'. In the same way some kings announce about them. Eg. a king says 'We Order to.....'.
