Are your parents paying for your college or are you paying yourself? |
|
We were talking about this in class today. The whole time I didn't think twice about my parents paying for my education. I thought I would never be able to pay for it, itd be too much. But then today in class we read this story about this lady that paid for her own education. Without ANY help from her parents or scholarships. She said she just worked hard, with various jobs, she had to sacrifice spending on things and going out, but she made it through. She worked, but still had time to do all her work and got A's. She said the experience of juggling things and money management prepared her for life. She says her parents didn't hold themselves responsible for it and she was proud and happy they let her do it on her own. She said that she's tired of students making excuses and saying they can't pay for their own education.
This inspired me to thinking I can pay for my own education if I wanted, and thinking about getting a job after high school. My parents are still going to pay a part of it, but they don't have that much money. How about you? Are you going to pay all by yourself, or are your parents paying it all?

| 1. lyte_face01 (59) | 3 weeks ago | I'v been a working student when I was in college. It was pretty hard to be a working student and maintain our grades as well. I only take a few hours to rest and sleep to catch up with all my deliverables in the office and my school projects and assignments. After the four years of sacrifice, i ripped the fruits by graduating with honors, got a good job right away and applied a lot what I learned from my experience.:-)

wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | Thanks, that seems to reinforce the benefits, and slight downsides, of working.:) I have been advised by a few teachers to get a job during college though, and I think I will. It will definitely help me manage my time better. Right now I don't have those skills as much because although I do things afterschool I still have a good amount of free time. Some days when I don't have anything I seem to just procrastinate in other ways and still end up doing homework until I go to bed. So I'm really glad for you and I'm hoping I will be able to learn the same skills when I go off to college.:)
| |
|
|
| lyte_face01 (59) | 3 weeks ago | yes, definitely, you will learn over time if you will try. I started out without any experience. Just believe you can do it and always do your best. Always put your heart to whatever you do so that you won't end up regreting. Although being a working student is hard, yet, when you reach the success, theirs nothing that can compare to the accomplishment you have made for yourself and of course, your parents.:-)

2. getbrowser (1431) | 3 weeks ago | My parents are paying for my college education. Without the help of her parents or scholarships, I may not continue my college life any longer.
It is next to impossible for us to pay for the college myself. Yes, in my country, most students tend to continue their education with the support of their parents. At the same time, for lack of the proper surroundings, it is difficult to find a high-paid part-time job. In fact, even if we have graduated from college, may of us will need the support from parents for a long time, such as buying a house, holding a wedding and so on.
For keen competition in my country, it is difficult to enjoy a better life without the help from parents.

wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | I understand that. You're from china right? I would understand that as well because I know the jobs there pay less than in the united states. I'm not saying it's bad to have your parents pay, it's really nice our parents are willing to pay, but I will probably still get a job to help them out.

3. bounce58 (580) | 3 weeks ago | Hi wigima5, I am on the other side of the equation. My kids are still young, but I am already paying for a policy that would pay for their college education when they come of age. Yes, I would still like it if they paid for their own education because I agree that it would really prepare them in life. But just in case, I might as well set aside money now. Of course the policy we bought can be converted to cash if they don't use it.

wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | Yes, that's a very good plan. My parents have also been using a plan like that but unfortunately they didnt start it as early as they should've, and they only started it a few years ago, so at the moment my dad says he only has $5000 in the bank for my college, possibly only get to $10,000 if we are lucky by the time i get to school. He says he might be able to get a loan for $10,000. But even then that would only be like 1 year of tuition.:S So the pressure's really on to get great grades so I can get as many scholarships n student loans as I can. (Freaking out here) Phew but fortunately your picture soothes me out. aahhh peaceful peaceful beach.;P lol. I think it's nice for you to save up for your children's education. I don't completely agree that parent's shouldnt pay at all for their children's education because that seems slightly cold-hearted because its like pushing them out into a hard lifestyle. But I also agree with you that they should pay for a part of it as well.

4. edxcast (355) | 3 weeks ago | Hi wigima, well she definitely wasnt studying engineering, lol just kidding(not so much actually). In my case, college is free, so no one really needs to pay for it. I know in places like in usa college are really expensive, so there is a need to save up. Even so, college isnt so expensive in here comparing it to usa. The most expensive ones i think cost something like 6000 dollars a year(maybe a bit more).
Actually public universities has been free since two years ago and my parents werent up saving either(and also we are 8 kids so saving for that much would be insane), so my parents didnt think of saving before either, but for the pricing it isnt THAT troublesome like in usa(still a problem for the salary that people win).
| |
| |
|
|
wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | Ahh! You are SO lucky! And yes, that is lucky since your parents had 8 kids. You must live in one of those countries where the government gives more money to public things, tho more taxes. One of those countries is the netherlands I think. What country are you from? Anyway, you are extremely lucky! That would definetely take off a LOT of the pressure, since colleges here are EXTREMELY expensive.:O Then you could go to any school you'd want because you wouldn't have to worry about cost. So u study engineering? good luck!
| |
|
|
edxcast (355) | 3 weeks ago | Hehe you are making it sound much better than what it really is. Im from Ecuador and the taxes are even lower than in usa. Really, universities in here arent soo good. I must say they are mediocre. So in a way you get what you paid for. In usa or europe, you pay much more but the education is way much better. I mean for engineering at my city, there is only one university that is decent(its actually pretty good but not compared with foreign colleges).
| |
|
|
wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | Wow. I'm sorry for that. But wow, lower taxes? But then you have the option of adding your own money if you want to go to a better college, don't you? Because if you have lower taxes, you'll be able to save up on money, and wont have to waste it on mediocre college. Yea, I know the colleges in those European countries are very good, but like you said their taxes are very very high. Well work and study hard, and good luck.:)
| |
|
|
edxcast (355) | 3 weeks ago | Hi once again, i dont quiet understand what your trying to say with adding your own money. Its not that simple, Im talking from a third world country, so saving up isnt so easy. Most people are poor and must use all of their incomes every month, which are extremely low. I mean the minimum salary is 210 dollars.
In my case, my dad is able to win more than that. But as i said saving up for 8 kids would be insane(and beside the expenses for us are really hard to mantain). Well but not all is bad. Almost all universities have agreements with USA universities. So for example i can do 3 years on my local university and do the rest on Georgia Tech, in Atlanta. Although i must keep good grades. I wish you luck to you as well hope your college plans go well. See ya

5. checkmail (663) | 3 weeks ago | Hello wigima5 this is checkmail and often am surprised about this subject. As mine education had been funded by mine parent till now and am also willing to fund my further education in near future. But there are some peoples wh manage to earn as well as fund their education. Its really a difficult task in todays world but its had become an trend line for our new generations. Its all inforces ablity of a person to manage himself.Am also trying hard to get with the trend.Hope you too are going to join the trend.
| |
| |
|
|
wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | yes, i agree with you. I don't really see it as a trend because a lot of people still have their parents pay, but yes it forces a person to manage oneself. Thx. and goodluck.

6. rg0205 (1718) | 3 weeks ago | I am paying off college myself but that's because even if I needed help, my parents won't give it. I would be happy to work a job and go to school at the same time but a lot of things we want in life don't exactly go our way.
In Hong Kong, you're lucky if you're able to do that because part time jobs for college students are not in abundance. They are very limited and pay very low, if any.
So, I worked hard and eventually I did very well with work and now I'm an executive in a Company without a college degree. When things started to stabilize and I found a bit of time to continue on with my education, I started Distance Learning Courses to further my education.
I was initially upset when my parents pulled my college funds because I refused to be shipped to the Philippines, not to mention in the darn country when I was born and raised in HK. I'm not saying it makes me better but I think the opportunity here is more and is better. I made my decision and I stand by it.
My brother, however, chose to follow their wishes and they gave him everything. He supposedly went to one of the best schools there and yet he's not seeing much success even if he does have a bachelor's degree.
I don't feel any bitter nor am I upset about it. In retrospect, the experience has made me more stronger and I've learned to be very independent throughout.

wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | Wow, tats amazing about how far you've managed to get, and without a college career! People here almost never get that far without some experience in college. Congratulations for you for getting so far on your own!=D And why shipped to the Phillippines? Do a lot of kids in China do that? It's great that you're returning to school, and I wish you great luck and success.:)
That's good, I have no doubt it made you stronger and more independent. It's sad about how your parents gave your brother money for college and not you. I would think it wouldnt matter for them.

7. mmxida (111) | 3 weeks ago | Hi, wigima! I'm the same with you, I just can't pay for the high fee for my university, my parents paid it all. Now I have a part-time job and make some little money daily, but it's not more enough for the university yet. Your story is inspired and I guess i would look for some other part-time job to make more money, cuz my family is not that rich. Have a nice day, wigima!
| |
| |
|
|
wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | Nice! Yea. I've become inspired by that story. because I never really realized how hard it must be for them, and not to mention how sweet of them to save up all that money for me to go to college.:) So maybe I won't have it all at once. but even if i dont get a job during college, ill try to pay it back after college. tho ill pbbly prefer paying it during so im not left paying it off for years.

8. oXAquaXo (253) | 3 weeks ago | Wow. That must have been a lot of work. I know that if I did that, it would have really made my day=)
My parents are actually paying for my college, as long as I get into a good one. I'm talking Ivy League. That is a goal they set for me, which I am glad, because I'm working very hard in school to try to get good grades and get into an Ivy League school (I'm actually really interested in Yale). I guess it could work both ways. Your parents not paying for you college has benefits, but your parents paying for you college (but with requirements) has benefits, too.
| |
| |
|
|
wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | Yes. I get really good grades. but I just dont believe ill be able to get into an ivy league school. ive been getting great grades since I was smaller. but I shouldve stuck with it more. then maybe i wouldve kept up high 90's. I still get A's. but in Ivy league they look for all A+'s, with tons of volunteer and activity time. and im srry but I want a life. tat would be extremely hard. im still trying but sometimes you can do all your work and try your best and still get only 80's on tests. I get lower A's n some B's too. but not just good enough. tats y im kinda upset cuz i used to get all A's n be the best n now there are many others who are also very good. no doubt i will still make it into a great school because my grades are in a top percentage compared to the rest of the school. but pbbly not ivy league. good good luck on that.:D i told my dad about harvard or yale n he laughed because he said no way. its wayyy to expensive.

9. xerexie (199) | 3 weeks ago | My parents are actually paying for my college fees since i cannot afford it and because my country is not america that students can have part time jobs. Here, you can hardly look for a job so parents are helping me. But now, im planning to take part of the paying. Im doing online jobs now. But i think this would take me months before i can pay for myself coz earning online is not that much.

wigima5 (202) | 3 weeks ago | Yea, that's great your parents are helping you. I realize other countries dont have part time jobs as easily. so I'm grateful to live here where getting a job during or before college is possible.

10. sublime03 (449) | 3 weeks ago | My parents stopped paying for it when I was on my last year for college. At first I did not know how I can pay for it, but when I insisted to go to school I worked hard and was able to pay for it. At first it was difficult, but knowing you were able to pay for your school was an achievement for me.
The feeling of having your own money and paying for things, knowing you are able to manage your finances at still a young age is an achievement that will prepare you for your future.
