church kidnapping children? |
|
in another story about a hospital in mexico city stealing and selling babies an evangelical group came up who apparently had done something similar. mexico city is packed with evangelical churches and groups and no doubt some of them are helpful, however in this case several older children the group was looking after disappeared without a trace. have you come across stories of evangelical groups being up to decidedly dubious, if not sinister, activities?

1. wlee9696 (382) | 2 months ago | I haven't heard anything recently but I do know that a lot of people hide illegal activities behind church fronts. They think that because it is a religious front no one will questions them and for the most part they are right. It takes a brave person, in my opinion, to utilize a house of worship as a front for illegal activities. But, people have been doing it for centuries. I wonder how these people explain to God what they have done?

jb78000 (1883) | 2 months ago | i doubt very much that god is at the top of their lists of interests. i'm sure some of these groups in mexico city are well-meaning and actually help in some ways but it is just too easy for less well-meaning types to use this as a handy cover. also some might start off with sort of good intentions but become corrupted.

2. purplealabaster (882) | 2 months ago | Well, I hesitate to answer this discussion, as it seems to be laden with potential landmines. However, since you only have one response thus far, I will dip my toe into the murky waters and hope that it doesn't get bitten off.
There seem to be a lot of kidnappings, or hostage situations, or whatever you want to call them involving radical religious groups. I don't know about over there on your side of the ocean, but here there seems to be an awful lot of that going on anyways. The religious leaders tend to seclude their following from the rest of the world, so they can gain more control over them. Then, they pretty much do whatever they want to their congregation. It really isn't about religion, though, at least not for the leaders. That is just their means of control rather than drugging their victims, although sometimes they do that too.

cloudwatcher (3491) | 2 months ago | Purplealabaster, I think you've hit the nail on the head here with your "radical religious groups" There is a danger of tarring all with the one brush, but some people will use any wagon to achieve their evil ends, and unfortunately the Church has been used by unscrupulous people to do so.

purplealabaster (882) | 2 months ago | Rabbit, I think as the world seemingly becomes more out of control, people want to feel more in control of their own destinies and that is one of the things that these cult leaders offer them. It is a false sense of control, obviously, but some people will grasp at any straw, especially if it is wrapped in pretty covering, such as flowery words. I think that you are also correct that a lot of the leaders use money as a means to control the congregation once they are inside. The leader is given all the money and most worldly goods, and the congregation are left with no money and minimal belongings. It is very sad, and most people realize that they have been duped when it is too late, and they feel that there is no way out.
Dawn, I think your purple flax dress will work against landmines as well as bullets and trolls.
Cloudwatcher, I would never intentionally paint all religious people or even organized religion with the same brush. Unfortunately, though, you are right that some unscrupulous people will use any means necessary to achieve their evil, and blind faith is a very powerful tool.

3. Pose123 (5839) | 2 months ago | Hi jb78000, This is terrible and is why we can no longer trust in religion. There was a time, not many years ago when I would not have believed such stories but not anymore. People can get away with almost anything if it's done in the name of religion. Churches and church leaders cannot be trusted, perhaps it was always the case but it is certainly true now. They will stop at nothing for power and money and the sad part is they have so much influence in government because most of them get elected by saying they are Christians. There are many good people in the churches who don't know what's going on and there are a few denominations that seem to be trying to bring about change. Let's stop giving churches special rights and start investigating what's happening behind the scenes. Blessings.

6. Hatley (21744) | 2 months ago | hi jb blue bunny yes a few years back that odd ball offshot of the Seventh Day Adventist church with the leader Jones that had all those people drink cyanide 'water so they could go to heaven. there was a lot of stuff in the paper at that time about them. also much later accounts of brain washing young people fromn another oddball churchof Scientology, some of my friends had children who'had been sucked into that. they had to have a lot of counseling before they got themselves straightened out too.

jb78000 (1883) | 2 months ago | i've heard of that one, and that cults in general can be very dangerous to the vulnerable. when i saw this i was thinking this could well be the reason these children vanished - new members for some manic cult.
