My mom has started a habit of feeding the birds in our yard with seed. Their demanding little things and they actually fly down with their heads looking through the windows churping telling her that their hungry. Some of them are so comfortable you can actually go real close to the doorway to see them and they will not even fly off. We got a bird feeder up the hill in our yard that she puts seed on where the blue jays eat together. The Blue Jays won't get no where near the windows but will instead eat in packs. The thing is their not so dumb.

hi savypat I do miss the ruby throated jade green hummingbird
that always stuck around El Dorado gardens our old apartment
complex. she was so pretty,I say she as she was so brilliantly feathered but again maybe it was a he as i guess the male birds are the ones who are the most brilliantly colored. anyway a lot of people did put up humming bird feeders and that little one stayed around all the time.

Yeah, it was a male, the females are plain brown. I love hummingbirds. Next spring when they come back I hope to spend time on my front porch, near the feeder. The hummingbirds will be accustomed to my presence and hopefully become friendly with me.

My mom fed the birds in her yard and whenever she'd hang out the clothes a couple of them would land on the lines a little ways away from her in hopes she'd put more seed out, of course she always did.

The Power of food for all Animals will always draw them back to where the Food is being given
It does not matter what type of Animal
Some become trusting and friendly but others will just come for the food but run or fly of when a Person tries to approach them

Thats funny...I have a birdfeeder in my yard but I usually don't feed the birds till in the winter time, when its real cold, I like to watch them out there when there's snow on the ground and they're eating the feed I put out for them, and they do get demanding, they'll be out there everyday like they're just waiting for me to put some feed out, I think they get spoiled..haha.

My birds are picky eaters, they won't eat certain seeds, I have to buy the premium seed to keep them happy. I bought some cheap seeds from K-Mart, my birds hate it, they refuse to eat it.
I had an aunt who would feed all the squirrels in her neighborhood. She would stand on her back porch and yell "Come here babies" and they'd come running. If she was late, they'd climb up her screen door to let her know they were hungary. They would often take nuts from my hand, I was thrilled. I often wonder how long they kept showing up at her house after she passed away. I'd like to get that close with the chipmonks under our garage but my husband isn't happy about that, sometimes chipmonks can be destructive. I sneak treats to them anyhow.lol

This does not surprise me in the least bit. Animals, regardless of how big and small they are, know who is caring for them. Birds, chipmunks, elephants... if you feed them, they will come. :)

I have been feeding finches for the past couple of years, and our entire family enjoys watching them feast. We usually get gold and red finches with thistle.
We also do suet and wildbird food that usually attracts the cardinals.

hi elmiko that is fascinating. I too did not know that
birds were so very smart.great thing to watch and I
imagine one could be really be enthralled just watching
them looking through the window and chirping, "feed me,
feed me". lovely discussion, informative too. thanks.
