I was never much of a shopper but now I can barely shop at all!  email this discussion to a friend?

I'm doing most of my Christmas shopping online this year but not by choice. I love Christmas shopping, seeing all the people laughing and enjoying themselves and looking at stuff that I think someone might like.

However, I just can't physically do it anymore. Even a trip around the grocery store leaves me in pain for hours from my arthritis and my bad back. I went to Radio Shack yesterday to get my son a gift and had to walk through the Sears to get there. By the time I got back to my car I was exhausted from dealing with the pain in my hip and my back.

Do you love Christmas shopping, or shopping in general? Or do you prefer the internet?

Hi dragon54u

Happy Christmas.

But I feel really sad to hear the pain of you. But what can we do. We have to bear lot pain in our life. I just want to say that when we are in pain then just think of that who are in more that our pain. It is right that we have pain and sadness but lots are there who has to bear lot more than us. I think pain is part of life . But then too we have to love the life.
I just want to say that you have hear the name of Stephen Hawkins. The inventor of the Black Hole theory. The most renounced scientist of this era. He lives the whole life in wheel chair. He even can speak with the help of machine.
Stephen William Hawking, CH, CBE, FRS, FRSA (born 8 January 1942) is a British theoretical physicist.
This are example to overcome our pain and barrier.

oh reeyan you are so right,if he can overcome all his handicaps and still do all the things he has done, then the rest of us can darned well deal with our own pains too. He is an inspiration to all of us.

Dr. Hawking is an inspiration! What a crime for that brilliant mind to be trapped in that crippled body--but perhaps that is why he is such a genius. God works in mysterious ways and if we trust Him, we can turn pain into blessings. Thank you for reminding me! happy

Hi Hatley

Thanks for you comment. So I think we should never think that we are in trouble. Trouble is the part of life. What charms is there in life if there is no trouble.

hi dragon54u oh my i just dread thinking about christmas shopping as my knee is killing me with old arthuritis shame on him for attacking my knee so. I used to love to Christmas shop and see all the others out there looking for the perfect gift but think I will do this year what i have done before, give my son a gift card so he can buy whatever he really wants. Also I always give him a care package of all sorts of edibles he could keep in his room plus some various kinds of tea as he is a tea drinker.
Perhaps I can even get him a gift card from Lands End on the internet as he loves their stuff . I did this one Christmas. it was fun too as he was really surprised too.happylolthumbup

That's so thoughtful of you! I have found some of the best tea at close-out stores for less than a dollar a box. I don't usually drink green tea but the passion fruit tea I got for $.59 a box at one of those stores is delicious.

At least I can still wrap! I love wrapping and using ribbons and such. If you have time, look at Reeyan's reply above, it is really inspiring and stopped my whining instantly! thumbup

I have to be careful about shopping this year. My husband suggested that we give everyone money except for the grandchildren as he cannot get out unless we have the van and now we are planning to sell it so that I may have to do the Christmas shopping. I am considering buying off the internet. I used to give gift cards, but with gift cards now having a time limit, I do not think that is a good idea. Besides now we have to watch our finances.

I did a bit of shopping yesterday on the internet. It was Cyber Monday so I got free shipping on everything! I'm buying much less this year. What I really enjoy is filling up my sons' stockings--I still do that even though they are adults, it's a lot of fun for all of us. I enjoy buying little things to put in them, like travel sized cologne and the like. I have to shop at the store for those, and I'm fine if there's a shopping cart to lean on but malls do not have carts.

Be careful on the internet! Be sure that anytime you are going to make a payment, there is either a little lock in the corner or the address begins with https:// or both, meaning it's a secure site.

Gift cards have become more trouble than they are worth!

I was too busy Monday to do any cyber shopping. In fact, I sort of forget about it. It would not have done me any good as I do not have enough to get that Macbook Pro that I want. sad

dragon54u,

Like you, I do prefer to shop with the crowd and Christmas cheer atmosphere. However, over the years I just find the popular departmental stores simply over crowded and getting quite a task at cash counters.

Much alone, with your current medical condition I can understand the pain you will have to put up going through the Christmas crowd. So, of late, I shop quite a fair bit online, where it is much more convenient and less hassle. I could go to various showrooms of the product I have in mind to understand more and have a hands on experience with it. Upon deciding, I will just look for the best bargain and place an order. Sure, beats looking for parking space, walking endlessly from store to store, inventory frustrations and long queues.

So, this Christmas, I am quite happy shopping online.happy

I have decided that I will make myself enjoy shopping online! There are changes in life all the time and this is just one of them. I do miss seeing all the crowds and the lovely little children on Santa's lap but I guess I could just go to the mall and sit on a bench and enjoy it rather than traipse around the stores.

I never liked shopping, probably because I never had any money. When I got married, my husband was like yours in that way but unlike you, it caused friction between us--I wanted to save for a rainy day and he believed in having whatever he wanted and tomorrow would take care of itself.

I began to enjoy shopping just a little after my divorce but I still shopped like most men supposedly do--decided what I needed, went to the store and got out quickly. Christmas and birthdays were the exceptions, I love buying things for people that I love. Heck, I'll still see something cute and think about how much my ex would like it. I wonder it that ever stops?

Anyway, I'm glad someone else shares my general attitude towards shopping! happy

I love to shop especially for the holidays. The only thing I don't like is the crowed malls and stores. Trying to find parking and fighting to get through or standing in check out for hours for one item. so like you I tend to shop online, or just give money. thank goodness for gift cards it makes shopping a whole lot easier

myLot reputation of 97/100. dragon54u (15683)   ranked 45 out of 5,520 in shopping  3 years ago

Like my friend Suspenseful said, gift cards can also be a hassle with their fees and their expiration dates. Christmas and birthdays are the only times I really enjoy shopping.

I did get a catalog in the mail yesterday that I enjoyed and went online and ordered some stuff from. Think Geek is a really fun place but it's hard for me to go through their online catalog. I would much rather page through a real one, turning down pages that have things I might buy on them. It's more fun when I can sit in my favorite chair, dogs on my lap and coffee beside me, and look through a catalog before going online to order! happy

Hi dragon
I hate to hear that you are having so much trouble with your arthritis. I have a small touch of it in my back but not enough to cause that kind of pain. I wish you the best. As for me shopping I would prefer to shop online and have the items shipped to my home. I do try to get out into the stores to see what they have. If I can without having a panic attack along the way. A good discussion and keep up the good work.
Have a great week.
Keep smiling.

Thank you for your good wishes, rosepedal! I'm sorry about your panic attacks, I understand they can be very bad sometimes. Thank goodness for online shopping! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and holiday season!

Thanks dragon for your kind words. You are right those panic attacks are pretty nasty at times. I had one today right here at home. I know what trigger it so I have learned what to stay away from now.
Keep smiling.

I can relate to your pain. I have had 2 back surgeries already, and found out, recently, that the same disc I had operated on is herniated again. My pain has been getting progressively worse for quite a while, a good year or more, but the doctor just finally ordered an MRI and found the problem. I am to the point where I can only be on my feet, for work or shopping, for a few hours before I am holding back tears. Today, the kids and I went grocery shopping, and we were only gone a few hours, but by the time we got home, I was in tears and had to lie down.
So, although I have done some shopping in the stores, my trips are as brief as possible, and I have been shopping on-line for the first time in my life.
I know that you probably know all the little tricks to help manage the pain, but this is what I do to help, and it does help, at least a little. First, I take a couple of Aleve, nothing more than that, no matter how bad I hurt, then, I lie in a tub of hot water, as hot as I can stand, for at least 20 minutes. Then, I lie in my bed with two pillows under my knees and a heating pad under my back. The combination seems to help me, at least a little. I am one that hates taking pills, so I only take them when I absolutely have to, and I try really hard to stay away from prescription pain killers.

myLot reputation of 97/100. dragon54u (15683)   ranked 45 out of 5,520 in shopping  3 years ago

I don't have a tub but I'll try the heating pad, thanks!

I don't like pills, either, but have found that Aleve doesn't do much. Surprisingly, plain aspirin does a better job.

I really miss mingling with the shoppers. Shopping online wasn't nearly as much fun as being among all the shoppers and one place sent me the wrong color so I'll have to hassle with that but overall it was a pain-free experience. Thanks for the tips!
