A number of years ago now, when the roomie's niece and nephews still lived with their mom in a little town south of Austin named Buda, I'd sometimes take her out to see them at her folks in a little town north of Austin named Cedar Park and then drive them home.
So, the first time I did it, her mom needed to go along to show me where they met the kids' mom at.
Now, Buda is about half way from my place to San Marcos and my mom had wanted to go shopping at her favorite store at the outlet mall there, so I said I'd pick her up too.
I have a mini-van and at that time, it was empty - well, with 4 adults and 3 kids and the kids stuff it was actually pretty full right then.
So, after we dropped off the kids, we proceeded on to San Marcos where we all went shopping at the store.
Now, on the whole, the store isn't used to being hit with 4 people coming out of the same car, but the gal helping us coped.
The roomie's mom got a couple of outfits, I got a coat, my mom got some slacks, the roomie tried on a few things - I think she got a shirt.
I was off helping my mom when the roomie started talking to the sales gal.
She said she was all excited, she had 3 generations of a family.
No, the roomie corrected her gently. She pointed at mom and me and said - "mother and daughter" and then at her mom "that's my mom."
Oh, the gal said, turned out she thought my mom was my roomie's mother's mother and that her mother was then our mother.
At least she didn't think I was the roomie's mom! (people seeing my white hair from a distance)
Now, at that time her mom was in her early 60's, my mom was in her mid-70's, so there was like 13 years of difference. Then, her mom is like 13 years older than I am, and I'm 7 yrs older than the roomie - so, you could possibly see this in 50 years where the mother is only 13 yrs older, but not so much in our parent's generation...
So, have you ever had a case of mistaken relationship?

Yes, and my mom loves it. For years my mom and I were mistaken for sisters. I remember being thirteen and in a gas station and the lady commenting how cool it was to see two sisters that looked so much alike. That made my mom's day! Now that might sound strange, a 34 year old woman being mistaken for the sister of a thirteen year old girl. But at thirteen I was 5'11, wearing a C cup bra, and had been mistaken for being the teacher of my class.

This happened to me twice so far. Once with my first wife (GOD rest her soul) we went to a friend of hers wedding and at the reception guest kept coming up to me and posing for pictures with me. One of our other friends who sat at the table with us said that she heard "Magic Johnson" was a guest at the reception and could I give her my autograph?! Boy DID WE LAUGH!!LOLLOL The second time was when I was 32 y/o an my oldest daughter was 15 y/o she and I were out shopping at the mall. When in one of the shops a sales clerk said, "you should listen to your boyfriend and buy that top b/c it goes great with those jeans!" My daughter looked her the eye and said, "boyfriend? Hes not my boyfriend, hes my Father!!"

Wow! you looked like Magic? I guess that was a good thing, but being taken for your daughter's boyfriend! Well, maybe she looked more like 18 and the clerk thought you were maybe in your late 20's... that happens.
Mom started coloring her hair in her 40's, so did my sister, but its just too much work for me...

[b]If that's you in your avatar over there, then you do look a lot like him!
At least you were mistaken for a good-looking person. ME, I was once rushed outside of a Janis Joplin concert in Houston because some fans mistook me for her! To my mind, she had a much different mouth than I, but I admit, I had the same bushy, strawberry blonde hair she had!

It's happened a few times in my life. My mother was old enough to be my grandmother, but her sister was 5 years younger and was mistakenly assumed to be my grandmother during a shopping trip for school clothes once. To say that my aunt took it well would be a lie - she was PISSED!!! LOL
Then there's the young man I go around with - he's 19 years younger than I am. We either get mistaken as "mother and son" (which amuses him) or as "husband and wife" (which amazes him for some reason).
I can't think of any specific situations other than those with regard to mistaken relationships, although my mother was always asked if her mother was home when she'd answer the phone. She'd say, "I AM the mother." LOL It worried her in later years that no one asked that any more - she was afraid she'd begun to sound "old".

My friend, "P", was the youngest in her family and her brother was 15 yrs older. She would sit for his daughters sometimes and would answer the door and the people would ask if their parents were home.
She always thought it was funny since she was only about 8 yrs older than her nieces.

My daughter was born when her sister was 18. People who didn't know who I was thought my baby was hers when she'd have her with her. Her sister began having kids a year later and now two of them have kids. So, everyone's in line for mistaken identities in that group!!

Back in the olden days when my oldest son was young i went to pick him up & ask some kid going in to tell him i was there. He came out looking like a mad bull & when i ask him what was wrong the kid had gone in & told him his sister was out there. I thought it was a compliment myself, lol.

Up until I was forty, and moved away, I would hang out sometimes with my elder daughter...there's only 17 years between us. People would think we were sisters all the time. I was constantly thought to be at least 10 years younger than my age. What an ego boost that was! I'm a lot heavier now and she is trim and fit at 39 and we are not even noticed as being related now.

That was probably nice
reminds me of my former super that was at the mall with her 2 daughters - one was 18 yrs, the other 18 MONTHS! They thought she was the second one's grandmother!
Fitting since she got married and pregnant, I think anyway, because she knew she was losing the first one's child support!

[b]Oh, maybe...didn't a few folks assume you were my mom, or at least an older sister, since your hair was going gray when I met you--even though you were barely out of your teens at the time?

Yes, I've been mistaken for my friend's mom. I believe that she is 13 years younger than I. She colors her hair, but I have let my hair go completely gray. I can't wait until it becomes snow white. Judging from my mother, I have another 15 or 20 years to go, though.
I live right down I-35 from Buda and San Marcos toward San Antonio. I've only been at the outlet mall at San Marcos once. I know it's not that far, but I prefer to shop still closer to home.

While holidaying in Italy many years ago when I was around sixteen my father and I entered a shoe store and the sales assistant mistook me for my dad’s wife! I recall feeling a little queasy at the thought (LOL)! My sister and I are fifteen years apart and again in Italy, I was pushing her stroller and a passer by complimented me on my baby! My poor mother may as well not have been on this holiday! What a sick thought!

The boss I had so much trouble with was at the mall with her 2 daughters, one almost 18, the other in a stroller and a clerk mentioned that it was sweet to see a grandmother with her daughter and family - need less to say, she was MIFFED!
