Do you have a cupboard full of Vitamins and Supplements?  email this discussion to a friend?

I do. Only one is for myself and that is fishoil capsules, the chemmart brand, which is a homebrand. I take fish oil capsules because I eat very little fish and no olive oil.
My daughter is a vegan, and not a very good one. Meaning she doesnt eat a range of vegeatables. Plus she is a competitive swimmer and getws viruses easily.
So we have this big range of tablets for her.
This includes Iron complex, Zinc complex, B complex, Echinacea, Horseradish, garlic & C, and Executive Stress B formula.
She doesnt have to take all these tablets at once, nor do they all need taking every day, with the exception of Iron.
Some of these vitamins I only give her if she starts to get a virus. Echinacea, zinc, and the horseradish complex are best for preventing or reducing the symptons of a virus.
I bought the B complex recently as her appetite seemed reduced.
Do you take any vitamins or supplements?

No I do not have a cupboard full of vitamins and supplements. We do take vitamins and supplements but we only take one vitamin and two supplements each day. I have to buy some about every 4 to 6 weeks it depends on the size of bottle I can afford to get when I run out.

myLot reputation of 98/100. jennybianca (7229)   ranked 97 out of 8,775 in health  3 years ago

I tend to look for specials on vitamins too, and do vary the size I buy depending on my finances.

Hi jennybianca

My conception regarding the use vitamin and other supplement is different than the common concept. Actually there is the needs of vitamin in our body but in a certain amount. So before using the vitamins we should know the necessity of it in our body. Because our body never consume the vitamin is if it is supplied more than its necessity. Suppose a certain amount of zinc or iron or some other minerals or vitamins is needed for our body and if we supply more than the certain amount then it is not consumed by our body. Food supplement are consumed when there is the deficiency in our body. So before using vitamin and other food supplement we should diagnosis it's necessity in our body. Otherwise it will be like adding more water in a container of certain measure. What happen when we add 1.5 liter water in a 1 liter container. Balance diet is more important to make us healthy. Some time we need to use food supplement, vitamin and minerals but before knowing it's deficiency in the body. If there is any deficiency of any thing then it is necessary but if already it is sufficient then it is unnecessary use.

I think best way of using supplement is to use after diagnosis its necessity.

myLot reputation of 98/100. jennybianca (7229)   ranked 97 out of 8,775 in health  3 years ago

I 100% agree with you. Thats why I only take fish oil capsules, as otherwise my diet is excellent.
But you see, my 16 year old daughter is very difficult. She is a vegan. I know there are good options for vegans to get most dietry requirements from food, but she is very fussy. I cant get her to try most foods. Thats why I give her vitamins.

myLot reputation of 85/100. reeyan (934)  3 years ago

It is good to give the food supplement to fulfill the necessity. As she is faced the deficiency it is your proper use of food supplement. But some time medical diagnosis is necessary to know the proper state of the body and the deficiency of vitamins and minerals.

myLot reputation of 71/100. XNinjaX (214)  3 years ago

You should give your daughter bee pollen(if she consider it vegan, I'm vegan myself and I do consider it vegan but some vegans don't) it's a really complete FOOD (that's really important because foods source of nutrients are way better than supplements!) it rich in vitamin B, proteins, and many other vitamins and minerals. But the main reason I suggest it is that it's good for building a good immune system! Spirulina is also a great food that would be good for her, it's the highest source of protein found in nature, it's high in antioxydants, vitamins and minerals. It's good for the immune system and like bee pollen it's good for athlete! I'm a triathlete myself and I found that it really helped my performance!

I'm really surprised to read this.shocked Nobody in our house or anyone I know of, take any supplements or vitamins daily. Unless one is very ill with some deficiencies, I don't think doctors too prescribe supplements. I had some vitamins and iron and calcium after delivery 28 years back.happy My children were given vitamin drops till they were an year old. We are all healthy with the ordinary food we take. If anyone falls ill we get the prescribed dose of medicines. No other medicine you will find in my house, and most of the houses in our place.happy

Thats great. It is best to get your proper amount of vitamins from the foods you eat. As I do, but my daughter doesnt.

I strongly advise you to change your daugher's habit and value step by step.
It seems that her preference to the food is too serious. Without such capsule or supplements, what she might be ? She will never know the result of her wrongly preference, since her parents spoiled her with some many supplement and she feel she is physically healthy.Even though you realize it is a bad habit, you can't instruc her to change.I suppose you and your husband should find the solutions.

Personally speaking, i like eating and i like the delicious food. I believe it is the most healthy method to keep us stong, phically or spiritually. Without various food, our lovely life would become meaningless.

I would very much like to change my daughters dietry habits. A few years ago I took her to a dietician and that improved the situation a bit.
I cant force her to change. I can only try and influence her.
I dont have a husband as we separated 6 weeks ago, & my daughters father died a long time ago.

Hi! I actually don't take any vitamins or supplements. I used to take a multi-vitamin but was actually getting too much of a lot of the vitamins and minerals and it simply was a waste. At times I'll take extra vitamin C if I'm getting the sniffles. happy

As a vegan myself, I'm very sorry to hear your daughter is not taking the diet as seriously as she should. I went vegan at fifteen and it's what made me teach myself to cook. Does she know how to cook or does she even have a good, general understanding of nutrition? I've been vegan for six years and was in college for two years for dietetics. If you'd like I can get some information for your daughter to help her out. If not, that's fine too, but I hate when I see people ditch the lifestyle simply because it's harder to keep up with than the American meat-and-potatoes diet. wink

Also, another great way to get Omega-3s is flaxseed oil (or any products with this in them, I know of some soymilks with Omega-3s) and walnuts. Both are great sources of natural Omega-3 fatty acids. Fish is kind of a second hand source, since they do not produce it themselves but actually eat it and pass it on to those who eat the fish. There's actually a really good natural margarine (that is vegan, as well, so your daughter could eat it) called Natural Balance that is made with flaxseed oil and is a great source as well.

Good luck with everything...I hope the supplements work out for you and I hope your daughter can get a little more adept with her lifestyle. happy

myLot reputation of 98/100. jennybianca (7229)   ranked 97 out of 8,775 in health  3 years ago

My daugfhtyer choose to be vegan at age 8, would you believe. I supported the idea, as I know how intelligent and stroing minded she is. Plus, over the last year, she became aware of animal rennet, so now I only buy cheese with non -animal rennet. I believe the vegan lifestyle can be cvery healthy. I dont see my daughter changing for anything. She will probably never eat meat. Thats fine by me.
Unfortunately she developed "dislikes" over the years and it is so difficult to get her to try new foods.
She knows a little about cooking , mainly cakes and biscuits though.
She could look after herself with a basic diet if need be.
I wouldnt mind some info for my daughter, if it is easy for you to obtain.
Thank you very much.

myLot reputation of 99/100. LovingLife139 (1003)   ranked 2,842 out of 8,775 in health  3 years ago

Those dislikes can get to anyone of any diet, unfortunately. As for the vegan cheese, have you ever heard of Follow Your Heart brand? The best vegan cheese (and it's meltable) ever. Says me. lol The whole rennet and casein thing was hard to accept when I first became vegan. For so many years they didn't have meltable vegan margarine or cheese...it was very hard to cook potatoes how I liked without the margarine, etc. There have been a whole bunch of new vegan foods that have come out.

I can gather a few of my favorite resources and send them to you in a PM. I know of an online vegan resource store which I have bought from ever since becoming vegetarian at 13 (they carry everything vegan from supplements to shoes to chocolate and even vegan marshmallows). I'll send you a link to that as well as some websites with useful nutrition information and even some recipe websites.

So at 8 years old...wow. She must have been a pretty smart kid. thumbup My parents figured it was a phase with me...years later I'm still vegan and I have a vegan husband, too. LOL. I told him when I met him I couldn't marry anyone who ate meat...within a month he was vegan and loving it. w00t I'll get some of those resources now and send them to you.

myLot reputation of 71/100. XNinjaX (214)  3 years ago

I totally agree with you! Follow your heart make the best cheese ever! I try to stay away from fake cheese and other fake animal products but this ''cheese'' is heavenly good O:)

myLot reputation of 98/100. jennybianca (7229)   ranked 97 out of 8,775 in health  3 years ago

That would be great getting a ferw recipes and a link to a good site. She is not into very strong flavours, which is why Ive had no success with getting her to try the many vegan sausages, patties etc available. I dont know of that particular cheese, but I guess you are American & Im Australian. I found a couple of good vegan brands here. She eats lots of cheese.
Yes, she is gifted and some of these children do things "differently" at a young age.
I will put in a friendship request so you can PM me when you have time. Thanks a lot.

In this age of stress and viruses, taking supplements is a necessity. I take Vitamin supplements with advice from my doctor. It is good to take vitamin C or B complex supplements to boost your immunity. On the other hand, if you can plan it well, you can consume foods rich in Vitamin C and B complex to increase immunity. Other supplements like you have stated may be used with the doctors advise and according to which ones may be beneficial to you. Care also has to be taken that the supplements do not result in an excess of a certain vitamin since it could be harmful.

I think it's awesome that you support her vegan diet that much! When I became vegan at age 13 my parents and family overall were really unsupportive and it made it really hard because they wouldn't want to buy foods for me, they were always saying that it's my problem if I don't want to eat like everyone... Anyway back to your daughter... you have to know that a poor immune system can be caused by many things other than diet, it can be stress, overtraining, some diseases or dysfunction. Now you think it's because of her diet and that propably is so change that first and if it didn't changed anything look for other reasons.

So what could you do to help her build a better immune system(and better health in general)?

The first thing I would do is to be sure she's hydrated enough, because dehydration is often the cause of a bad immune system!

Zinc is also really important for the immune system. Vegan sources of zinc include ; wheat germ, tempeh, beans, lentils, pumping seeds, tofu and whole grain cereals.

Bee pollen is I think the food you daughter would benefit the most, it's a really complete food, it contain vitamin B, complete proteins and it's really good for the immune system and athletes. But find out if she consider it vegan first!

Spirulina is another great superfoods, it's the highest source of protein found in nature, it's rich in various vitamins and minerals, it's good for the immune system and for athletes too! With spirulina you need to start with a small amount like 5 grams or less a day for a week and then increase slowly to the desired amount. I'd say 15 grams is a good amount, 5 grams 3 times a day. I can send you a link if you want to buy spirulina in big quantity and at a third the price you would find it in health food store!

Medicinal mushroom are great for immunity! Mushsroom blend are what I recommend, be sure it include shiitake, reishi and maiitake. Medicinal mushroom are also a great source of complete proteins!

Vitamin C obviously, taking it from fruits and vegetable is better of course as you get not just vitamins C, so try to prepare more fruits dessert for example uncooked and unsweetened of course ! =)

Hemp seeds is really good too, it's one of the best protein! It's rich in magnesium which is important for athletes it's also a great source of essential fatty acids like the so popular omega 3(in my opinion it's way better than fish oil). It's high in minerals and vitamins too.

Goji berries may be a great addition too, it's a superfood but it also taste great (well personally I find it taste great!) What is special about goji berries is that it's a great source of complete proteins(that's really unusual for a fruit!) It contain many minerals that are good for the immune system (like zinc and germanium) as well as some vitamins B.

These foods are great addition to anyone diet, but if the rest of what you eat is not so good it won't do miracles. So if you cook for her try to add more nutrient rich foods like quinoa, tempeh, leafy green vegetable (Almost everyone don't eat enough of these!), nuts and seeds and whole grains.

I hope that will help your daughter!

myLot reputation of 99/100. hotsummer (3660)   ranked 141 out of 8,775 in health  3 years ago

goji berries. are you referring to the fruit or the one in the bottle like the goji berry juice. there is commercially sold goji berries but i have to order it from canada. and it is not cheap. if it is really good source of protein.

myLot reputation of 71/100. XNinjaX (214)  3 years ago

I'm referring to the fruit!! I know it's not cheap. I would recommend finding a website that sell it in large quantity (that would be cheaper on the long term) it's like spirulina... it's pretty expensive too but if you buy it online you can have it at almost a third of the normal price (per lb)!!!

myLot reputation of 98/100. jennybianca (7229)   ranked 97 out of 8,775 in health  3 years ago

This is fantastic advice. Im sorry your parents did not support you when age 13. I new it was foolish for me not to support my daughter, even at age 8, as she had strong views.Plus, I thought that being a good vegan would benefit her health.
I agree with you regarding her immune system. We cant really be sure exactkly what causes it, but I suspect a combination of intense training and her inadequate diet (at times). Competitive swimmers are known to have reduced immunity.

Hydration, yes, her coach stringly epmphasis that, & I think she is okay in that regard.
Zionc, she gets some in the bread I buy, a special whoilemeal/wholegrain natural bread.I tried to her interested in red lentils, as I love them, and she hated them.
Someone else mentioned the bee pollen. What does it look like? I guess a health food shop would know about it.Im going to look into that.
The gogi juice.. I can get that here. There was a lot of hype about it, and a so called expert got on TV and said it is no better than an apple!
Think I will buy her a seed mix too.
These are really good suggestions. Thanks very much.

myLot reputation of 71/100. XNinjaX (214)  3 years ago

I'm glad you found my answer helpful! Bee pollen look like small yellow granules, google it if you want to see what it look like. When I mentionned goji berries I was talking about the actually dried berry not the juice, I guess the juice would be good too but the goji berries are better.
