Oh supreme irony... |
| |
| Well, Band-aid is about to make itself a fortune. Also, I am unlikely to be moving to Greece any time soon. Let me explain... Been having some problems with nasal allergies, so I had an allergy test done. Honestly, I'm not the world's best housekeeper and I was halfway expecting that dust mites would be on the results and that I'd have to wash the sheets more often, among other things. Not quite. Here's the list. It's only 3 things. One of them is not a surprise, really. I knew a lot of people had this particular allergy. Anyway, without any further ado: 1. Olive trees 2. Bentgrass (as opposed to straight grass? ) 3. Cat dander Yep, you heard it here first. Cat dander. It's funny. I used to bathe my cats. But they were indoor outdoor cats and they sometimes came in with fleas, dirt, etc. I stopped doing it. Don't know why, but I did. Well folks, the bandaid people are going to be really happy because I'm going to have to start bathing cats again. At least the vet taught me how to do it so that they don't freak out as easily. Sigh. Cat allergies. Me. A total cat person all my life. Talk about irony. | | | | | |

| | And you just developed this issue recently? How strange. I too am a total cat person, grew up with like 6 cats. I have 3 now. You'll have to tell me the proper way to bathe them. Mine always get fleas even though they've been indoor cats for a year now. Drives me crazy! Speaking of which... did you ever find that missing cat of yours? | | | | | | |

| | I've always had airborne allergies, fairly minor. They've gotten worse over the last 5 years or so. I've had cats all my life. How you bathe them. You put about an inch of warm, not hot, water in the sink. You put the cat in the water so that only their feet are wet. You use a brush to get them wet starting from the bottom up. It doesn't freak them out the same way that dunking them does. I've tried it and it definitely works better. If you can afford one of the flea treatments that you put on their neck (program or whatever it is, I forget the name), it gets rid of them really well and pretty much permanently as long as the house doesn't have them. | | | |

| | Sorry about Sunny.. I've lost cats like that too, I still miss them. I've used the neck treatment stuff, store brand and prescription grade. The store brand don't work at all, and the prescription grade stuff is really expensive for 3 cats, I can't afford that every month, and they do need it every month. Actually I found even sometimes the prescription stuff doesn't work all that well. Dawn dish soap does cut down on the fleas though, that's what a vet told me to use when the cats were too young for the medicine, and when the medicine I did use didn't work. | | | |

| | I don't get if they're indoors why you would need to apply it more than once. There must still be fleas in the carpet or something. can you flea bomb the house? | | | |
katsmeow1213 (7751)
|
| | I will not flea bomb here, the space is way too small. I have flea bombed previous houses where we had the space, but I have no safe place to put the cats to keep them away from the fumes, and I have little kids who crawl on the floor, and their toys are everywhere.. I can't expose this house to those chemicals, you know. The problem is not inside though, the problem is the neighborhood. There are some stray cats around here, and the fleas are everywhere. They come into the house on our clothes. I've seen fleas on my shoes, socks, and pants when I stand outside. Granted it's not terrible right now because it's winter, but the cats do still carry some fleas on them. It's awful in the summer, because that's when we bring them into the house. In the summer they're in my carpets and furniture. One night I counted 26 fleas jumping on me while I sat on the sofa with no cats around!! It's gross! I'll probably try a yard spray this spring. They aren't too expensive, and I have a small yard. That will kill the fleas in the yard so I don't bring them into the house. | | | |

| | I have three indoor outdoor cats. The black female has beautiful hair and skin, the blond boys have awful flea allergies, even when I cannot find a flea. If I do frontline plus once a month it fixes it, but it is very expensive. It is funny that Princess is flea resistant now. She is the one I nearly killed with flea treatment when she came to my house as a dumped off stray. | | | |

| | Frontline - that's the one. Yep it's expensive. There are places you can get it at a discount though. Try a cat rescue group or something. We had them really bad in our first neighborhood also, it was a constant, ongoing battle. You'd walk out on the lawn and they'd be crawling up on your legs. Good luck... | | | |

| | Advantage and Frontline are the 2 prescription brands I've tried. Advantage used to work great, but over the past year it has not done a thing for my cats. That is when I switched to Frontline, wondering if maybe they built up an immunity to Advantage, and I thought the Frontline was worse! I'll go back to Advantage as soon as the fleas become a big problem again. At the moment it seems to be under control. | | | |

| | Is it Greece with all the olive trees? I was thinking Italy. But then, I've never traveled to either. I'm not a huge cat person myself, but I once heard that the best way to rid cats of dander is with distilled water on a wash rag. That it is okay to wipe them down and not necessary to submerge them in water. | | | | | | |
dawnald (24268)

| | Greece and Italy both. There are actually a lot of them in California too. Yes, you can do that with a rag, and I probably will. But I may give them a full out bath occasionally too. | | | |

| | Hi dawnald You poor thing!! I can really sympathize with you as i too am alergic to cat dander and after 2 years of suffering I finally got some good advice that helped me to control cat dander which of course isn't just on the little fur ball, but all over your house as well. Experts in this area (yes, there is an expert for everything!) say that the once or twice (what are they nuts, twice?) a week bath is absoultely necessary. You are a better person than me because after being clawed to death almost beyond recognition, I now leave that to the cat bath people. They give me a break if I do at least 3 baths a month, so to me and my arms and face, its worth it. Keeping the house dander free is the problem and I'll share with you some of the things that I have learned help tremendously. Use hypoalergenic pet wipes between baths, they neutrilize the allergen contained in the dander. Use a vacuum hose on your cat. Some cats like it, some dont, but if he/she does, it removes a lot of loose hair and dander before they make their way into the atmosphere. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, vacuum everything, especially crevices where dander gets trapped, baseboards, window sills, lamp shades, drapes, etc.If you can, operate an air cleaner with a HEPA filter in bedroom and main living areas.Steam clean carpets and upholestry periodically, Use an anti mite product such as X-mite to remove dander from upholstery and carpets. Use anti mite covers on your bed, have your furnace and ductwork professionally cleaned once a year, change your furnace filters every three months or more, adding a layer of cheesecloth over furnace vent will provide additional filtering of dander. and lastly, always use a dust free litter over the clay types. Hope some of this helps you. I would also wash the walls down..if your really ambitious. I also brush my cat daily,,it helps a lot, make sure to rinse brush out each and every time..Best of luck | | | | | | |

| | Dawny.. can't you just use a small pail-like and just whoosh it over the cat gently.. and then using soap water too? I don't have any pets before, so I don't know. How about an animal bathtub moment for cats? That would be awesome. Since you have this allergy.. just use normal soap or something. As for the fleas, use a fleas bat to ward off those flies. The small one just gentle enough to brush your cat's furs or something. | | | | | | |

| | You can get shots for the dander - but you have to lean on the allergist - because they only want to give them to people that work with animals. MY allergist said: People aren't going to give up their pets, I'm just going to treat them. I'm allergic to cats - now, remember HOW many I have... no, I don't have major problems. | | | | | | |

| | My mother-in-law did the shots. She is allergic to everything under the sun, cats, dogs, olive trees, white ash, walnut and idk what all. She did about a year's worth of shots and then her insurance changed and the new one wouldn't cover it. She couldn't afford to pay for it on her own, so she stopped. Probably the worst thing she could have done, but if you don't have and extra $300 a month, you just don't. | | | |

| | I agree - my mom paid for mine - the insurance only covered 80% after the deductable.. | | | |
dawnald (24268)
|
| | Even at 80%, I'm sure it's not cheap. The way my insurance works, assuming I could even get it approved, they contract with the providers to charge a "reasonable and customary" amount for each service and then they pay 80% of that after my deductible. So if the doc charges more than the contracted amount, they have to write it off, basically. | | | |

| | I have a suggestion for you. How about a cat bag? A mesh bag designed to bathe cats. That will help with keeping them in one place, and reduce scratching. see link www.renspets.com/index.ph... You can also reduce scratching by wrapping their paws in special non-stick bandaging. You can also get a mesh cat muzzle, an example of which you can see on the same site. | | | | | | |
