Someone You Admire Retires or Quits |
| |
| Kurt Warner is an NFL (American)football player for those who don't know. You don't need to know him to answer this discussion. Kurt Warner retired today, and he is one of a select group of athletes I admire. His rise to fame as a quarterback in the NFL is just unbelievable. But now on to the point of the discussion... He retired, and while I'm sad not to see him play anymore, it doesn't get me down or leave me feeling at a loss. How do you feel when someone you admire retires from their career, or quits what made you admire them and they go on to something else? When Oprah Winfrey announced she would be leaving her talk show very soon to devote her time elsewhere, I was amazed at how many people were devastated. I don't mean sad or unhappy, but tearfully devastated. I understand over the years she has come to mean a lot to them. And I'm not comparing Kurt Warner to Oprah Winfrey, I'm just giving my own personal example, and an example maybe more people can relate to. So when a singer, writer, athlete...you admire steps away from what brought you to like them in the first place, how do you feel? | | | | | |

| | I loved watching MJ. When my dad came home from Chicago one year, he brought me back a 6'6 cardboard replica of Michael Jordan. That thing was huge. My dog barked at it like it was real. | | | |

| | Agreed. I loved watching him beat the odds and followed his story for years. Thanks for noting his retirement especially in this forum. He was something the world needs more of, a real role model. | | | |

| | He did have one small problem in the middle of his career. His gambling. But he really seemed to work on that problem and he moved on. Compared to other athletes, that was a tiny problem. | | | |

| | It is sad because it is something that I enjoy. Even so, I get past it as something else will come along to take it's place. | | | | | | |

| | I suppose Australia is known as a sporting nation with greats in many fields. I think of great swimmers who excelled at the Olympics and of great cricketers like the Chappells, Dennis Lillee, Rod Marsh etc. Sure, we miss watching them perform, but the beauty is that others take their place. Records are constantly broken. We remember the "oldies" with fondness but our lives didn't depend on them and we are sad but not heartbroken. I am old enough to remember Sonya Henie the ice skating wonder who graced our movie screens and Johnny Weismuller (Tarzan and Olympian) whose swimming was considered amazing. When we look at their old movies now, we think how awkward and even amateurish they look when compared with modern day wonders. How do I feel? I am thankful for the input they have given, wish them well in their new venture and watch for the ones who will take over the reins. | | | | | | |

| | That is beautiful. I remember at the Sydney Olympics there was an Australian runner, I think she was an aborgine (sp.?). Whatever happened to her? | | | |

| | You mean Kathy Freeman. She is still around, appearing in the news every now and then. She certainly could run! I think we are better known for our Olympic swimmers. For a small nation we do very well. | | | |

| | Hi Ambiepam I'm so sorry to hear someone retired you admired. I'm really understand your feelings.Few years ago,a singer I truely admired was quit. Her voice sounds like dolphins. It makes me inner peace, soft and comfortable. And she is a super star who real insist on herself personality. So I was shocked when I heard she wanted to rest for a while and no one knows when she would come back include herself.I'm afraid I'll never heard her voice,I caught every news about her..what's she looks like know, when she will come back? Since she have retired ,she's looked more happy than before.May be she should have a good rest ,no work ,no other things.I should bless her! | | | | | | |

| | Well, the man in question that I admired, has retired from job in sports as an athlete, but I think you would like him. He is going to concentrate now on all of the charities he has started. He also goes to schools and talks to kids. He's a good Christian man. A lot of people say they are Christians, but they don't live like it. He does. : ) It is so rare to find a singer that allows you to enjoy their voice and talent so fully. I guess we can hope the lady you love to hear sing, finds a way to make more music, but is still able to keep a kind of rest that keeps her refreshed. | | | |

| | I don't know the guys you admired. But I think I like him because his personality.I don't care what the religon he is.Only if he is very kind guys,he loved charities. Although he retired,I'm convinced that he would go on charities.Don't be sad,he still here ,you loved guys.May be he will no longer be an athlete. You should proud of him,LoL.... | | | |

| | What I meant about his religion, was that he was true to it. You know how some people claim that they are good people simply because they believe in God? But then they turn around and cheat, steal, and lie. This guy doesn't do that. I just like it when people live up to their words. | | | |

| | Of course I will feel sad because you used to seeing them in every program airing and you learned for them once they says something. You will get to use to not seeing them when they are gone in time, but you will surely miss them. I will like the person like Oprah because I feel everything she says is real. I learned from her and she have a big heart. I am truly devastated when she finally announces she will be leaving the show soon but now I accepted it. | | | | | | |

| | I feel like it gives someone else an opportunity to do what those people might have been doing.....like leaving an opening for a new quarterback....so I am not upset by it. LaVeryl Spenser wrote some pretty fantastic books that I loved. When she retired I said ....good for you! She left an opening for someone else to maybe step in where she left off! I admire them very much for knowing when to move on! | | | | | | |

| | If only I liked the quarterback who will be taking Kurt Warner's place. It is Matt Leinart, who once drafted by the Cards, dumped his pregnant girlfriend, and started dating "stars" such as Paris Hilton. | | | |
