Say hello to a Born Again Leapfrogger!  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 93/100. Sandra1952 (3179)   ranked 3 out of 329 in helium.com 3 years ago

I've always thought leapfrogging was a waste of good writing time, so I've only ever done it if I've found glaring typos, which doesn't happen very often, I have to say.

Two of my friends from MyLot have now joined Helium, and they are rather concerned that I have no writing stars and they do. I wasn't too concerned about this, as I earn a respectable residual income, but one friend in particular has analysed my articles and advised me which ones to leapfrog to get my writing score up and earn some stars. She's much more practical than I am.

Anyway, on Monday, I decided to try it out, and I'm keeping a chart to see how the articles do after leapfrog. I have to say, I'm amazed at the results. Of the 12 leapfrogs so far accepted, 7 have gone up from almost at the bottom of the pile to the top 25%. One zoomed up from 54 of 58 to 5 of 58. Even an article that was rejected for the leapfrog has moved to number 2 in the rankings.

So, before I write anything new, I'm going to work through my 200+ articles leapfrogging like mad. I hope to have a writing star by the weekend.

How about you? Do you leapfrog? Does it work for you? Any good tips for my other leapfrogs?

Hello, Lamb. Always glad to see you. Basically, 'leapfrogging' is the term Helium uses for editing. The articles are rated by other members, and if an article is sliding down the list, you can leapfrog it to bring your writing score back up again.

BTW, did you get laid yet, or is it still a work in progress?

myLot reputation of 95/100. The_Lamb_Lies_Down (6932)  3 years ago

Hello, Judith - I'm working on it. I was really surprised how much difference the leapfrogging has made already, as I always thought it was a waste of time. It's certainly made me reasses my Helium strategy, and it's nice to have friends over there as well as here.

Hiya Sandra

I am still unsure what leapfrogging means, but as you probably know I haven't been back to the site in some time. One of my poems was conmtinually being deleted for being in the wrong category and I had no idea to which it would belong lol. I had one star and would've found it easy to maintain, because I enjoyed reading the poetry. Anyway... I am pleased that you are having success with yours.

Hello, Alice. If you weren't so busy trying to get laid in Lamb's box, you'd have seen I explained it there. rasp Basically, it's re-editing the articles in an effort to boost them up the rankings. I find Helium very confusing on some things, but Thea has sussed out the rating system, and she's helping me to move up the lists and build up my writing score.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

Sandro. wink firstly. tsk tsk.. Lamb doesn't have a box, dear!

BUT, more importantly..( I thinkconfused) is--- what the heck is a SUSS and how does one apply it when you are 'leapfrogging'

myLot reputation of 99/100. Alice_in_webland (1434)  3 years ago

I did read it Sandra but wasn't taking it all in.. too busy having fun! lol

Leif: 'suss' as in to suss something out... is slang for solving something or figuring it out and lamb does have a box (#1) but not in the sense that we ladies have boxes hahahaa

Congratulations! I think the longer you leave your articles on Helium that they just kind of fall to the end. It's especially important to leap frog with a big group of articles like that. I don't like the rating system too well because the newer articles usually go to the top. It's always good to remind everyone of your article by leapfrogging and putting it towards the top again. I am sure you will have a lot of writing stars by the weekend. Good luck.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Sandra1952 (3179)   ranked 3 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Hello, MommaJ. You're much more experienced on Helium than I am, so thanks for your advice. I always thought leapfrogging was a waste of time, but the last few days have proved me wrong. As you say, it's good to bring older titles back into the ratings, and at least when I have some writing stars I can go for empty titles and up front payments. I've found my enthusiasm for Helium again.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 2 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Good for you. I know you are a great writer and I am sure that once you get your articles looked at again that you will get those stars in no time. Then you can start making upfront payments which will be nice. Better than not getting anything for them. Try to leapfrog the ones that are lower than 50% first. When you leapfrog if the leapfrog is accepted your article starts at the 50% range and moves from there.

myLot reputation of 97/100. Trensue (1758)   ranked 6 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Momma J, thanks for the tip and the compliment. I'll keep you posted.

Trensue, I can't wait to see what turns up, either. Hopefully not long now.

Art, I don't mind you popping in to help a fellow writer - that's what it's all about.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 2 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Thanks Anythng, I actually got an email on that. I am sure they will refuse me on that topic like all the other topics I applied for. LOL I'm still working on my writing. I noticed sometimes you get an article that just kind of stands out. The rest of them suck. LOL

Trensue, I have looked through some of those empty titles. BOY does Sandra have a selection on Helium. I am actually starting to write to some of them, after I get them approved on AC. LOL

OK, I don't understand what leapfrogging is. Explain?

myLot reputation of 99/100. nyhollyjean (2254)   ranked 91 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Gee Dawn, I'm surprised you don't know--as you have children. Leapfrog is a game where one child squats down like a frog and another child leaps over the first child's back, and then the first child leaps over the second child's back, while that one is squatting like a frog and on it goes, etc....

But, the way Sandra means is that "leapfrogging" is a form of editing over on Helium. When you write an article or whatever, it joins a line-up for ranking. If you edit to improve the article--it has a better chance to move up in the rankings line. Hence "leapfrogging".

lol

myLot reputation of 93/100. Sandra1952 (3179)   ranked 3 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Hello, Dawn. Leapfrogging is Helium's term for editing. If an article is slipping in the rankings, you can make changes, resubmit it, and hopefully 'leapfrog' the earlier version. I did explain it to Lamb in Box 1, but I think Alice distracted him. lol

myLot reputation of 96/100. dawnald (24272)   ranked 63 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

It was the Helium thing I didn't understand. My children never played leapfrog, but I used to when I was a kid.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Sandra1952 (3179)   ranked 3 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Hello, Gerty. I've discovered that, the more time you can spend on Helium, the more you get out of the site, both earnings wise and creatively. I've earned more in the last 3 months than in the previous two years, and I find I'm enjoying improving on my older articles. It's definitely worth devoting some time to it.

Hello-
I've been missing, but his topic is important. I love to leap. I have written a lot that just plain needs to be fixed. I also know that as raters we get bogged down with reading the same titles, so during a contest great article may sink to the bottom. After a few weeks after the contest a leap may rocket the article up a few notches.

I find that weekend nights are the worst time for me to try and submit a leap. They rarely get approved them. Even some of mine that were 200 words from the early days and were upgraded to real articles were rejected. I keep trying until it works.

I am a firm believer in leaping!! You go girl!! But still write new things.

Hi Trensue: When do you think the best time to leapfrog is? Just wondering...not that I am planning to do any anytime soon.

happylolhappy

myLot reputation of 93/100. Sandra1952 (3179)   ranked 3 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Hello, Trensue. Thanks for the tips. I'll avoid leapfrogging at the weekend if that's the case. I've leapfrogged about 20 titles so far, and two have been rejected. I honestly don't know why, because one was the first article I wrote for Helium, and I just cringed when I read it through again. The leapfrog was tons better.

I've made sure I've altered the opening paragraph in each one, so that raters realise there are changes. Some of the leapfrogs I've been asked to rate looked exactly the same, and I didn't want that happening to mine. I've written one new article this week as well. I think it's important to keep fresh stuff coming, as well as improving the existing articles.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 2 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Great information Trensue! I hardly do anything on the computer on the weekends, so that is good to know just in case. Sandra, that's great you are writing and leaping at the same time. I think that will also help your writing stars.

Leapfrogging is one of those things I resisted for a long time, but it really does have its benefits. Good writers need to do it as much as bad ones. It's really about getting your article where it should be, and making your way up the star ladder. Having writing stars really pays off. I finally cracked 4 stars, and the payout this month was much better. It took me a long time and a lot of writing to make it there, but the financial difference was really apparent.

I always disliked leapfrogging because I felt I should be writing new things, but sometimes you need to bite the bullet and realize that it's not even about your writing, but about moving your article up the queue.

Good luck!

myLot reputation of 93/100. Sandra1952 (3179)   ranked 3 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Hello, Art. Yes, I've always seen leapfrogging as a waste of time, but as the results get better and my writing score rises, I'm becoming quite evangelical about it. As you say, with Helium, it's all about ratings.

It's actually been quite an eye opener in regard to my writing as well, because I started at the bottom of the pile, with the first articles I did back in September 2007. At the time, I thought they were good, or I'd never have posted them, but I can see a definite improvement in my writing over time, which is why I thought I really ought to try and get myself some writing stars.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 2 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Hi anythng, You know it's rare I try to leapfrog. LOL Most of my articles that are at the bottom have stayed there. LOL You are right about leapfrogging and making a difference. I think they really need to improve the whole rating system. I guess it is good they use real people instead of machines, but sometimes the people don't read the title that is being written to, or they just don't read the articles. I am going to try to take more time to rate. I want to get to the extra rating money. LOL

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

So Thea.. we cannot all fix toilets! There HAS to be many a person who cannot or will not fix their own toilets or many a fine well-trained toilet fixer will be out of work .. and think the deprivation of food and clothing and cell phones to the thousands of children!!silly. We cannot have lost revenue to licenced professionals as , with this reduction comes a reduction of taxes paid to keep the upper echelon happy; and. of course, the rest of us with flushable toilets.
On the other hand, organizational and management skills are EVER so valuable as they all apply to ALL aspects of life and tend to allow more fixing ability in a broad spectrum of needs! As in managing to keep toilet fixers in a higher income bracket for the country's well-being.

Well done, thea! Was there really ever any doubt?? ( not from me, ever)

Well sweetie the toilet fixing just wouldn't work a second time. Same old running problem but worse. Now the Greek was here and looked at it but declared it definitely needed a new part which he got for me, but its still sat in my car, as he had a bit of an accident after acquiring said part which prevented him putting his hand in the toilet tank. I'm sure he'll sort it soon.
Probably quicker for you to swim over from Sweden to do it for me though, if you put on waterproofs so you don't get the DAIM bars wet.
Have to say it was quite easy getting Sandra organised and she never once told me off for being bossy.happy

ahaaaa! That was YOU, Sandra, thanks! I noticed the old profile was all ‘looked at’w00t

Should I leave a snack or something??

Thanks for the link! Nice one! I love music and the fact that YOU can also enjoy it too!
Have fun and I love your enthusiasm now that you are back on helium, et al! Interests with perks!!

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

Thea!! HAHAHAHAHA! sure! Your wit hasn't suffered a bit!

I am glad you will eventually, one day, sooner or later, if all goes well, and in this lifetime, have a properly working toilet and a duvet!
I have had a little surgery so I am here in spurts , poor me, so I must say an open wound would NOT be anything but an attraction to sea life of a threatening kind to my wellbeing. Thus a delivery at this time is not feasable... The DAIM bars I have slipped under the plastic covering of a duvet that you will eventually when the time is right and at a non predetermined time will receive to warm you against the cold in winters to come.
This I declare has all been a fabrication of my imagination of wishes to come true.. alas!

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)   ranked 9 out of 329 in helium.com  3 years ago

Well I trust it wasn't life threatening and serious surgery or you wouldn't be messing round on here. What happened, did you have a fingernail clipped? It's probably way too cold to swim over anyway and certainly the sea is too rough at this end. There were two fishermen nearly drowned here last week but the sea police got due praise for saving them, from their office. Must say though this month has a very unpleasant nip in the air. happy

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

aaah thea, nothing life threatening thus far. I am keeping an eye out for signs of infection since the procedure was a bone invasive,, daim it!

However on to less unsightly things.. I am really amazed and curious as to how these two fisherman were saved by the sea police from their office.. hmm.. did they use a bull horn or microphone to tell the fisherman to swim? or?

And you have to know I am toying and teasing. I saw the comma! Just I saw you too and I miss you so thought to draaaag this out a wee but more.

So nice to see you!happy

Hello, you two. Fancy having a party and not inviting me! Thea, don't let Leif play down his injuries - he hasn't squeezed my oranges for days, so it must be serious. If you're desperate for the toilet, we have two, so you're welcome to pop over and use one. Bring your own paper, though, as we're on an economy drive. lol

Leif, stop toying with Thea. The Greek will be after you - and he won't be looking for you to squeeze your oranges, either. w00t Oh, I don't know, though ...

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  2 years ago

Not inviting you?lolYou started it and then walked out for an orange squeezing, I am guessing, and didn't return till just now.. Any explanation for this? (that you wish to share, I mean)

I am looking forward to meeting the Greek, as I want to make sure my 'lilla Sys' is looked after properly for those very very few, but, nonetheless, important things for which she would need 'looking after'
wink hmm, you mean he might also be an orange squeezer?happy
