If you havent seen the movie PRECIOUS. You should. Its about an extremely obese, african american girl, living in an abusive home, pregnant for the second time by her father. The abuse the girl suffers is terrible. The actress Gabourey Sidibe did a wonderful job portraying this girl. This was her first movie and she was nominated for many awards. Anyways she went to the oscars and she looked beautiful. Even though she has been the butt of many jokes by fellow actors and hollywood personas. Going into the pre award show Joan Rivers was saying that they shot the movie AVATAR on her back and other terrible things. Its not the first time that celebrities have been rude regarding this girl and how big she is. Thats not fair. It is however a perfect example of the real way Hollywood acts toward each other. How this girl must feel. Its not like she doesnt know what they're saying about her. Yet she was beautiful at the Oscars. She walked with her head held high. Im sure the next day when she read the supermarket tabloids or watched Enews or Access Hollywood she saw what they really said behind her back. How can anyone be that hurtful? Money is the root to all evils with some of them. Its just Hollywood showing its true colors. What do you think about this?

If you have been watching television and the Oscars as long as I have you learn to expect certain things from such as Joan Rivers. It's her job to say something obnoxius. If she didn't she would be sick. That is why she is hired to do what she does. I think that Gabbie is probably used to the stupid and assinine remarks people make and she has the intellect to consider the source. And, she has Oprah backing her all the way. I say that because I think if you are in Gabbies postition and you befriend someone like Oprah or Barbara or some of the big namers you tend to let the retarded comments go by the wayside.

i think its truly disgusting. the girl wasnt there for a beauty contest.. she was there to be acredited for her acting abilty and a job well done. she should be commended for her talents in her craft.. afterall, her looks were what got her this part in the first place wasnt it? not berated because she isnt one of the binge/purge stick figures on the red carpet that prolly cant act half as well as this girl did.

Well said Tessah! you've said it all. She did get the part for being a large actress. It is true hollywood binges and purges themselves while taking tons of prescription medications that they have no business doing just to be thin. This girl is truly talented. This was her first movie! And she was nominated for a oscar. She should be proud and the skinny people should have a sandwich and some respect. lol Happy MyLotting dl

That is really sad. I feel bad for her. It doesn't seem fair at all for other actresses to make fun of her for having a weight problem. I bet this is a great movie and this girl has a great heart.

Hey Shaun! I havent seen the movie yet either. I hear if you cry at movies you will be crying that's for sure. She did something most actresses, no matter what size they are, have never done. She was nominated for awards the first time out. Hats off to Gabourey Sidibe. Thanks for sharing. dl

That movie had me in tears. It's so distressing to me that there are people such as Precious who truly live in these types of realities. I was bursting with pride for Gabourey! What an amazing experience it must have been for her to be nominated for an academy award for her first film! She looked stunning on the red carpet. She had poise and personality. And...to have Oprah Winfrey be the one to comment about her!!!!! It must have been truly mind blowing for her! Hollywood in general is an extremely cold town entirely driven by money. That's no secret and that's why most "stars" don't live there or associate there. They all live in houses in little unknown towns where they are free to be "themselves". Some even choose to live outside of the U.S. completely, Johnny Depp comes to mind. The sick thing is that people actually listen to Joan Rivers (have you looked at her face?!?!?!) or ENews like they are the true authorities on anything that has to do with the industry when, truth be told, most of them couldn't have the celebrity careers and so ended up doing little shows as a result. They make fun of anybody on either end of the spectrum. Not just for being overweight but underweight as well. They make fun of celebs who are "dressed down" and shopping at the grocery store like their always supposed to be glammed up! What garbage! I hope that Gabourey took it like water on a ducks back. She had an AMAZING first showing in Hollywood! Look how long it took Sandra Bullock to get recognition! The sad thing is....there just aren't many roles out there for heavyset characters. Until writers actually get on the ball and start writing more true to life characters, it might just very well be the only truly stellar role Ms. Sidibe gets.

It is a shame. Its sad these days how everyone has to be so careful what they say, not to seem racist against any race, or for/against any religion, but its 100% okay to bash obese people. Its not just Hollywood. Its the WHOLE world. Hollywood just gives the world what it wants to see. Thats why in most movies with an obese star, that star is the butt of 100 fat jokes in the movie as well as behind the scenes. I've not seen Precious yet. Its on the netflix list under a couple hundred of movies my hubby wants to see........

Hi Dloveli, I appreciated here courage and humility. she will always be great for me despite all the negative comments about here. it's just sad that people in the hollywood who are expected to support and affirm their colleague stars are the ones being soooooo negative about other stars.

Imagine. Here is this actress, who on her first try, gets picked to star in a movie with some very famous people. Hollywood should be ashamed of itself. They really should use some of their millions to take some classes on etiquette. I must say this though. Gabourey Sidibe got the part because she was overweight. If she doesnt change herself even in the slightest, I dont think she'll get many more parts. Hats off to her for her performance. dl

We know how tacky the Hollywood witches are. I am proud that we are able to start having movies about real situations with real actresses playing them. I have not seen the movie. I do know lots of beautiful larger people.

I think Hollywood is just behaving the same as the other people in Gabourey's movie (and real life) only their snide, cruel comments are more public. From all the interviews I have seen with Gabourey she is very brave to have subjected her obesity to the world. I hope she has now earned a ton of money from the film so that she can lose some of her weight as her current weight is very, very unhealthy.

What you say is true Whiteheather. However celebrities are in the spotlight all the time. Every word, every move they make is under a microscope. You'd think they'd act accordingly. They're role models supposedly. Its so funny. In interviews they all talk about being a role model and not wanting negativity in their lives. As far as her weight goes, I dont think its for anyone but her to comment on. Im sure she is very aware of her weight. Its up to her to change it. Maybe she likes it that way. Who knows. You are right in the fact that her weight is unhealthy. Only she can want to change it. dl

Sadly, as rude as people have been at times, she has been treated better than most obese actresses. And that doesn't bode well for others.

joan rivers has nerve to talk smack.she's had so many facelifts her eyes look like somebody put a stick to the back of her head and pulled it tight. hollywood's always been like that.they'll turn on you in a heartbeat. especially if you don't meet that messed up "ideal" (whatever it is that particular week)

I certainly think no one in their right mind should ever criticize others, especially for the shape of their bodies and etc. Society is cruel, there's no other way of tackling this rather than just ignoring those whom make crude comments. It's sad if fans are divided because of celebs' looks and all that. Acting talents are the real deal, and I've never seen the movie Precious, but I 100% think that the actress Gabourey Sidibe has done such a great job and it's awesome that she has been nominated for many awards.

I agree, people, not only Hollywood, can be cruel. Sadly, I am one of them. I am not really a Hollywood fan, I do not sit through red carpets or Oscars, nor am I conversant with recent movie releases. I felt ashamed when I read this discussion, I was really moved by all the comments here. I just saw some clips of the red carpet and I made a double-take when I saw Gabourey Sidibe and my ignorant mouth just blurted how enormous she is without even looking past her size to her talent. Because of this discussion, I surfed the net about Gabby. Her accomplishments put me to shame. Who am I to judge her by how she looks when I am overweight myself? This discussion made me think twice. I pride myself with being fair, and yet a single video eroded my certainty. I am truly sorry for my obnoxious behavior. I appreciate this discussion for making me realize this. Acceptance is the first step to change.

Yes Precious is a great movie and I greatly admire the lead actress. I like how Oprah introduced her. I didn't know that other Hollywood actors are that bad to her. We just can't generalize them though. I hope she stays strong and prove her detractors wrong.

Yeah I am in favor in your idea, maybe they just showed who they are.About the money is the root of all evil I also agree with this, but remember even you all have the money you want it is not guaranteed that this all can satisfy your happiness.

hi dloveli that sounds like a great movie. How dare Joan rivers say things like that about that poor girl. if she is a great actress she should be treated as such. Why is size such a big thing in our country, its almost like if a person is not a size 7 or 10 she is not worth thinking about or talking to or any thing. thats so unhuman and unkind. what is wrong with people?I am proud that she kept her head high and did not turn tail and run off. I think it really stinks and is so unfair. here is a sample of how I feel. those pretty much sum up my feelings.

The movie PRECIOUS has been attracting my attention. I've not really watched it but the good reviews is pushing me to watch this the soonest possible time. You made another good description of this movie and you have really convinced me to watch this as I go home tonight. And the lead actress should perhaps do something to shed pounds so that her detractors could stop making fun of her. Anyway it is not only to avoid the ridicules but it is also for health reasons By the way I agree with you that she's beautiful but she could be much more beautiful if she slims down.

Hey dloveli~ I haven't seen the movie "Precious" but I am planning on seeing in even though I know it is going to upset me very much. It is a true story based on a book. I think that from the parts of the movie that I have seen that Gabourey Sidibe is a beautiful girl and did an incredible job playing that role! And she came from a loving family, the opposite of what she played! She did an amazing acting job and deserved to be nominated for the Oscar! And I think that all those disgusting Holllywood people that made fun of her are the lowest of the low! And Joan Rivers, don't even get me started! She looks like a freak! She has had way too much plastic surgery done! And her daughter is ugly and looks like a horse! I don't think that any of those people should have said anything if they couldn't find something nice to say! And I give Gabourey so much credit for behaving the way she did and ignoring their ignorance!
