I received an email, supposedly from Microsoft, telling me that my account is scheduled for termination and if I want to keep using this account, I am to give them my username, password, date of birth, etc., or they will terminate my account within 48 hours. blink

Now, I have to tell you, I have my suspicions that this is a fraudulent email. suspicious

The email address where this email originated is..... are you ready???

"spreadlove_hotgirl22 @ hotmail . com" rofl

I'm wondering if they think we're that stupid or if it's them who are that stupid. What do you think?

Have you received an email as obviously fake as this? If so, what did you do with it? I reported it as fraud. I'm never content to just delete these phishing emails. I want to do all I can to ensure that these morons are caught and prosecuted. How do you handle them?

Hi Marti
Some of them just do not think and do stupid things like that or like you say they must think we are stupid
I just do not get it why People have to do this, the thing is though there will be some poor person out there that will fall for it

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6158)   ranked 1 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

Hi Gabs. I agree, some people will see only the message and, if they're relatively new to the internet, they won't be as savvy as us oldtimers.

This one wins the prize with me, though. I've seen a lot of obviously fake email addresses, often with misspelled words, such as "accout" instead of "account", but this is by far the funniest one I've seen. rofl

You and I know a lot of those are scams, but sometimes I wonder just how much grey stuff these things have (notice I did not call them people)

They think you are so stupid you will do what they want, but then you look at what they have asked and we all know who the stupid one is.

Now of the sender was offering employment that might be of interest, Id ask for some samples to try, ha ha ha.

lol I don't think I'd want to work for anyone as stupid as this but I sure would love to have fun with them until they catch on to who is scamming who. lol

Of course, I know you're referring to the email address. I've seen enough "spreadgirl_hotlove's" to automatically just roll my eyes when I see another one. rolleyes

I keep getting dodgey emails from someone pretending to be Ebay and threatening to close my account down if I don't give them all my details. Luckily enough I spotted in the beginning that the email didn't look genuine and sent it off to Ebay for them to verify. But it doesn't stop them and they keep coming and getting more and more threatening each time. It's a bit worrying really, I just have to keep my guard up.

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6158)   ranked 1 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

Hi lindspowers. You are doing the smartest thing, sending it to the official site for verification. I always tell them that I am sending it for verification but also sending it to the International Fraud Unit, just to be sure, you understand. I HOPE it scares enough of these idiots into at least slowing down their scamming efforts for a little while.

lindspowers (60)  2 years ago

Good point I should send it to them aswell, as they just keep on coming. Ebay doesn't seem to be able to stop them. The trouble is aswell is that i don't want to reply to them and mark them as a safe sender as this might make it easier for them to come through in the future. Do you think I am being overly worried?

myLot reputation of 99/100. leenie50 (2134)   ranked 1,969 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

Hey linds,
I used to get those same emails from people pretending to be from ebay and there is an address I used to forward these to and ebay would research and let me know if it was a spoof. If you go directly to ebay, they will tell yoy where to send it. Sorry I can remember.
Leenie

lindspowers (60)  2 years ago

That's ok, I did get an email of Ebay where you can send the spoof emails to. So I do do that and they confirm that it is fake, but it doesn't seem to stop them. I've just had another one tonight saying that my account has been suspended, so they just keep on coming. Hopefully they will give up in the end.

It is sad, alot of people, that are not real familiar with the internet will probably do it. I am glad you report it, I would too for something like that. I do not report all the stupid ones, that say you have inherited 500,000 dollars from some other country. That is all I would get done doing.

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6158)   ranked 1 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

I report them all as phishing scams but the worst ones I'll go the extra mile with. The ones that claim they're from the FBI, UPS, Paypal, etc., I report to the corresponding (legitimate) website. If they use a hotmail or yahoo email address (always a dead giveaway), I report them to the servers as well. At the very least, I'm hoping those accounts will be closed. Of course, they'll just open a new one unless their IP address has been banned.

Hiya MW!! This is so blatently funny!!I use to receive these all of the time when i was with MSN. But since moving to 'Gmail' i have not even gotten one of these fake emails! I don't even get spammed anymore...When i did get these emails i also reported them as we ALL need to do this to catch these morons at their own game! I'll bet alot of people do respond to these emails , though & that is sad as they are not paying attention as to where they are coming from...hehe the 'name' says it all!! Lori

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6158)   ranked 1 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

This one wins the prize in my book, Lori. I'm wondering which Microsoft executive has this as their email address. rolleyes

I have a gmail account, too, but I'm rather attached to my hotmail account because it's the first email account I created when I got the internet. I keep it for sentimental value. lol

I actually get a kick out of reading some of these really stupid scam emails. It boggles my mind to see just how stupid some human beings can be. It also gives me a bit of a sense of satisfaction to at least hope I'm slowing down one of these thieves. Who knows? Maybe reporting them does some good. I think I've only read about 2 or 3 of these idiots being caught, though. Still, that's 2 or 3 who are no longer stealing money or identities from innocent people.

Grrrrrrrr!!! They make me so mad! angry

hi marti. i am still receiving fraudulent emails from lotteries, paypal (of course they are not really coming from paypal), etc. this past few months, until now, i am receiving messages form UPS, as they say. but i do not open them, i do not read them especially if those mails landed in the spam folder.

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6158)   ranked 1 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

Hi Neil. My computer is fully protected against viruses and other nasties so I'm not really concerned about that. My husband does work for Homeland Security at times so he's made sure that we have more than enough protection.

I've received emails from all those places, too. The more recent ones sometimes say they are coming from our own FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation)! The funniest part about them is that so many words are often misspelled and they have very poor grammar and punctuation.

It's sad to know that some people do fall for these things, though. There are plenty of warnings all over the internet about these types of emails but not everyone knows enough to make sure that they are fake before sending the information asked for. It only takes a little knowledge to see how fake these things are but there are people out there who are way too trusting (or gullible as my sons would put it) and believe everything they read.

That's why I always report them. It may do no good whatsoever but if I can slow down just one of these thieves I believe my efforts are worth the trouble.

myLot reputation of 98/100. neildc (8307)   ranked 42 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

i guess i can say that this laptop is fully protected too. but i do not open and read mails that come in to the spam folders. they are suspicious and i feel more secured if i don't open them. i really never reported any but i think, i will report one if i find it very necessary to do so.

I will report things like that if possible. I don't get stuff like that in my regular email that I use for family, friends and business because I don't put that address anywhere on the net. Mostly it comes to my mail.com account.

Sadly enough, lots of people are trusting. My 87 yr old mother is constantly getting viruses on her computer because when something pops up warning her that she has a virus she clicks on it because it looks like Microsoft crap. We tell her and tell her but she just doesn't get it. I think she and others like her and who falls for these things. Thank God, the only pop-ups or emails she won't respond to are the fake ones from a bank, IRS or those claiming she's won money.

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6158)   ranked 1 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

I completely understand about your mother, dragon. I had to warn my mother many times about these emails. She was good about not responding to them, at least until her brain was beginning to be affected by cancer. Luckily (I think), the cancer spread so fast in her brain that she was unable to even remember her computer after only a week or two once her brain was affected. But I feel so bad for all the elderly people who do fall for these things and end up losing a lot of money or have their identities stolen. I also feel bad for those without the brains to see through these scams but not as much as I do for the elderly.

My efforts at reporting these creatures may not do any good but I'm still hoping it does, even a tiny bit.

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6158)   ranked 1 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

Well, I did report it to Microsoft but Yahoo had nothing to do with this particular email. I will report it to Yahoo if they use a Yahoo email address, though. When they say they are coming from UPS, Paypal or the FBI, I forward those emails to the appropriate companies so they can be informed of the scam.

There is an International Fraud Unit (I believe it's part of the U.S. Secret Service, at least in this country) and I have forwarded some of them there. Wherever these emails claim to originate, that's where I forward them.

I hope they all end up in prison one day. They deserve nothing less.

Hi Mentalward! I think I receive at least 5 of them each day. And it's becoming very annoying ang tiring. Even if you report them as spam. They keep on coming. And I am mostly annoyed by the mail that starts with "Coming from the desk" or "Urgent for your help and discretion". Those are very stupid. How many of them died everyday and leave a fortune in the bank to be claim by someone they don't know!? jealous Duhhh!!! lol Or has won the lottery ticket of a country I haven't even set foot on. I think it's annoying and I hope they will get caught and just stop these nonsense. (^^,)

myLot reputation of 99/100. mentalward (6158)   ranked 1 out of 13,139 in internet  2 years ago

You know, I'd be a multi-gazillionaire by now if I got all the money that's been promised me through these emails. I can't tell you how many lotteries I've won or how many people died, along with their entire families, in some horrible accident and left me their millions or King So-and-so wants my assistance to get billions of dollars out of their country. rolleyes

One of them told me I was chosen because I had the last name as the deceased. I wrote them back and told them that if they could tell me my name, I'd be more than happy to help them. Of course, I did report them right away and they never wrote back. lol

You'd think they'd come up with something more believable by now, wouldn't you? Maybe something a bit more unique? I feel bad for those gullible enough to give away their banking information or become victims of identity theft.

Maybe the internet ought to require a license to use, like driving a car. We'd all have to pass a "gullibility test" before we could get online.

myLot reputation of 100/100. Aphroditei_5279 (1126)  2 years ago

LOL..me too, I would be so happy if I got those millions..and they can send me emails everyday if they want as long as it is true..lolthumbup And it's kind of creepy to think that there is a lot of deceased people who know your email..lol...I even got one, she is the widowed of so and so and then she has to donate her assets because she will be dying. I don't know why you can't donate it to your neighbor or the near orphanage maybe?!!! duh..lol...

And I agree with you, there should be a gulibility test or filter wherein those words like King so and so are used. The mail would be automatically dump in the bin.thumbup

Oh by the way, those scams are also present on mobile phone too. From the emails, I haven't heard someone who got fooled yet. But with the texts scams, yes, a lot of people did believe they won the lottery and gave up their personal datas.
