Stars on Ice hits bad times? |
| |
| Back in 2003 or 2004, my sister won 4 tickets to Champions on Ice up here in Sacramento at a charity auction. They came with backstage passes. She, her husband and son went, and they gave me the fourth ticket. I didn't live up here at the time, so I flew up to see the show. Afterward, we got to go backstage (there was quite a crowd of people who also had backstage tickets) and get the skaters' autographs. I did a discussion about that a while back, so I'm not going to repeat all that. But it gave me an idea. I'd been going to Stars on Ice for years and I was wondering if they did backstage passes also. So I wrote to them and asked. They replied back that they didn't do that because of safety issues. Darn. So I shelved that idea and (not quite) forgot about it. This week I got an e-mail from Stars on Ice about a "meet and greet" with the skaters. Aha, hard economic times? For a mere $34.99, I can join their fan club and sign up for "meet and greet" tickets. They stole my idea and assigned a dollar value to it. lol There wasn't a Sacramento show this year. I'm having to go to San Jose to see the show. Maybe they aren't doing as many shows because times are tough. And here's another way to make up for that a little. I don't know. Or maybe they are just getting smart (greedy?) and have figured out how to eke out a little bit more of the blessed dollar from their fans. Anyway, I'm still thinking about it... | | | | | |

| | Apart from the idea they stole from you, why don't you go and skate with them, then? That should be fun, don't you think?? TATA. | | | | | | |

| | Everyone seems to be doing what they can to pinch a few pennies. You should go and have fun, whether you go meet and greet or not. You could drown your sorrows in fan frenzy. I bet their reasoning is that those who must pay will not be the riff raff and will then so graciously not have any accidents. | | | | | | |

| | Besides times being tough, I think that skating isn't as popular as it was before. I just peeked at the Stars On Ice site and I'll bet a good many people don't know more than half those skaters (whereas a while ago it seemed like most of them were big superstars that nearly everyone knew). The big "stars" are missing. And so, skating shows are not an easy crowd drawer as it was a decade ago . . . you're right that they must need another tactic to bring 'em in. But yah, times are tough! My friends tell me the group lessons and practice sessions are quite empty. Coaches who used to be snobs and not take adults or beginners are now starving for students. Even when I was going to the rink in the early mornings when I was skating, there were only expensive cars parked in the lot (well, except mine - ha ha) . . . skating is an expensive sport!! It's not the best sport to be in or start during hard economic times. That being said, if you have the means and opportunity to go, GO SEE IT! Heck, there's a figure skating drought on TV . . . so go see something in person! As far as paying to meet them, I guess that depends on how big of a fan you are. You might be able to see them for free as they practice at the local rink (out here they did that at times - you could meet them outside, but you can't watch them skate - they often blocked out the windows black!). Hope you get to see the show though - that should be fun!!! | | | | | | |

| | OH yes one more way to gain from their fans. Many don't mind. I guess is a popularity thing. See the tables would turn if one happens to be influential and well off. They would be begging for one to take them tickets and bugging all, to have their show near by you. | | | | | | |

| | Oh wow, that would really get expensive. I agree with you, some time priorities have to be observed too. | | | |

| | I don't know that I would necessarily call this a sign of bad economic times. I think that I would be more inclined to call it a case of greed. The reason that I say this is that all of these individuals have huge endorsements and make a pretty good chunk of money for these. In addition to that, having them do their tours is not something that they are willing to do for free and they are probably asking for more money to tour. Thus, instead of raising the ticket prices for the general public, they instead add "extras" for people that are interested. So, did you sign up for the fan club that was your idea? | | | | | | |
