http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/05/17/obamas-aunt-granted-asylum-prevent-return-kenya/ CLEVELAND -- A U.S. immigration court granted asylum to President Barack Obama's African aunt, allowing her to stay in the country, her attorneys said Monday. The decision was mailed Friday and comes three months after Kenya native Zeituni Onyango, the half-sister of Obama's late father, testified at a closed hearing in Boston, where she arrived in a wheelchair and two doctors testified in support of her case. The basis for her asylum request hadn't been made public. People who seek asylum must show that they face persecution in their homeland on the basis of religion, race, nationality, political opinion or membership in a social group. Her lawyer, Margaret Wong, said last year that Onyango first applied for asylum "due to violence in Kenya." The East African nation is fractured by cycles of electoral violence every five years. In a November interview with The Associated Press, Onyango said she was disabled and was learning to walk again after being paralyzed from Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disorder. Onyango moved to the United States in 2000. Her first asylum request was rejected, and she was ordered deported in 2004. But she didn't leave the country and continued to live in public housing in Boston. Onyango's status as an illegal immigrant was revealed just days before Obama was elected in November 2008. Obama said he did not know his aunt was living here illegally and believes laws covering the situation should be followed. A judge later agreed to suspend her deportation order and reopen her asylum case. Wong has said that Obama wasn't involved in the Boston hearing. The White House also said it was not helping Onyango with legal fees. In his memoir, "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance," Obama affectionately referred to Onyango as "Auntie Zeituni" and described meeting her during his 1988 trip to Kenya. Onyango helped care for the president's half brothe rs and sister while living with Barack Obama Sr. in Kenya. I realize it says that Obama and the Whitye House did not help. But really would you want to be the judge that sends the disabled Aunt of the President out of the country? And if she is here illegally, why in the hell are tax payers paying for her housing?

I wouldn't really care one way or the other if she were working and paying taxes. I can't blame anyone for wanting asylum from a country that is dealing with warlords and such. It's an environment that is frightening and not something I can fathom living in. My issue though, is that they've just invited someone, who is already living here illegally, to continue mooching off a society to which she has contributed nothing. Again, if she had a job, or was at least in the job market, I wouldn't have an issue with it. While I would not accuse Obama of getting involved, I do agree, most people would not want to be known for deporting the aunt of a sitting president.

Maybe a good alternative is to send her to the UK!

She's contributed nothing? Obama's aunt has had a social security card since 2001 so I'm not sure what her employment history was before her injury, if any. What I do know is that she was not simply mooching off of society and contributing nothing before the media spotlight found her. She was a public health advocate on behalf of the Boston Housing Authority and also worked as a volunteer computer systems co-ordinator for a program in which adults over 55 mentor children in their communities.

Did you actually think they would deport her? I mean come on...they were not going to deport a relative of a sitting president. We all knew how this one was going to turn out. So I guess this means she will continue to sit in our country and let all of us tax payers support her. Obama is a multi millionaire...why doesn't he support her instead of us.

If anyone believes that Obama and the White House did not help then they must be afflicted with the same mental problems as those who think Obama is doing a good job as president.

Do you really, really think that the judge hearing this case wanted to send a handicapped, 58 year old woman who is related to the president of the united states back to that hellhole of a country? Every warlord and his brother would be planning her kidnapping in the hopes of a big payday at her expense. That's common sense. She's known...not unknown.

Tell you what...I'd be happy to let her stay if Himself goes back home where he was born (according to many who know him--including his wife)... It wouldn't be me if I didn't, would it? Still, in self defense, I must say, that can was opened long ago, & millions of people have looked through all the worms...& found the dirt is true. The taxpayers are paying for her housing because she qualifies. She also gives back to her community by volunteering...at least she was before the media was all over her. It wasn't a requirement but some people who can't work do desire to give back.

that is one thing I would LOVE to know....how she was in public housing and on public assistance when a judge had ordered her to leave the country and she didn't. She was here illegally...how did she qualify?

Did you really think she would be deported? There was never any question in my mind, she'd get to stay. But I want her working...now! But she's probably too sick and old to work, so chalk another one up for the moocher category. You'd think family would step up and help...
