LA over plays their hand...needs to think before they act.  email this discussion to a friend?

LA has decide to pass a boycot of Arizona over their illegal immigration bill...well that may not have been a smart move...and they really should have thought about it. YOu see LA gets its electricity from Arizona. So now they may be in the dark. Either they need to back off the boycott...or find a new place to get electricity.
Arizona Corporation Commissioner Gary Pierce said in a letter ""If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation. I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands. If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona’s economy,".

Well I guess that puts the LA city coucil in its place...either put up or shut up. What do you think LA will do? It is not like they have a lot of choices as to where they can buy their electricity from.
Tell me what you think? Should LA have thought about the implications before they voted on the Boycott? Should they have boycotted? Should Arizona turn off the lights in LA?

I just love when do-gooders get their comeuppance! I think this is great. I do not think it will get to the point of LAs power going off. But the threat was well timed. LA needs to worry about LA and not what Arizona is doing for their residents, by the people, of the people and for the people. If anything, LA needs to look at Arizona as a model.

myLot reputation of 83/100. lilwonders456 (3526)   ranked 34 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

You would have thought SOMEONE at the city council meeting would have brought up the point that if htey boycott Arizona then where will they get their power? Idiots.
California does need to stay out of it. The people of Arizona get to decide their own laws...not other states dictating them to them.

Well, these aren't the good ol' Enron days on the west coast, so I am sure that Arizona doesn't have as much power as is assumed. If they don't send LA electricity, then they will lose that capacity, thus losing money. But, will LA take that chance? I'm not sure.

myLot reputation of 83/100. lilwonders456 (3526)   ranked 34 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Arizona will just sell the power to another state....they won't loose money and they know. Which is why they are willing to call LA's bluff on the boycott.
LA should have really thought before they did it.
I don't think it will come to a "black out" in LA. But it just goes to show you that the city council was not thinking when they passed the boycott.

myLot reputation of 60/100. Taskr36 (6782)   ranked 284 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Well it's a difference between taking a financial hit, and having a city crippled by rolling blackouts. California's piss poor management of power is part of the reason the state has such a horrible budget deficit. This has been going on for a long time now.

Arizona's electric company likely wouldn't have trouble finding another customer, even another city in California. LA on the other hand, would be at the mercy of whatever power company is wiling to negotiate with them if Arizona pulls the plug.

At the very least, Arizona is calling the bluff of a very ignorant mayor and city council in LA.

myLot reputation of 57/100. thegreatdebater (1837)   ranked 333 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Lil, what state is Arizona going to sell it's electricity to? There aren't any shortages of electricity any where so if they sell it to another state then that will create a surplus thus decreasing rates, thus making them less money.

I don't know that if LA knew that this wouldn't hurt them, or maybe they did. I wonder if Arizona knew what THEY were doing when they passed this completely political bill. Like I said before, for a state that cares so much about money, they sure are losing a ton of to make a political statement.

myLot reputation of 57/100. thegreatdebater (1837)   ranked 333 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Taskr, tell what city, or state is struggling with electricity? If they cut off LA, than they will have surplus capacity of electricity which they can not store, or save for another day. Thus, they will have to eat the excess electricity, or lower electricity rates, thus costing them money.

Actually, I think that LA is actually doing something intelligent, and Arizona might just lose a very big customer because of their political posturing.

myLot reputation of 60/100. Taskr36 (6782)   ranked 284 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

"Taskr, tell what city, or state is struggling with electricity?"

Debater, I'm sure you're aware that California imports more energy than any other state in the nation. As I said, another city in California could just as easily be a customer. Do you think that LA is the only city in California that needs to import energy to keep their grid online?

The bigger question is, where will LA get their energy if they thumb their nose at Arizona? Obviously not all of California's imported power comes from Arizona, but a lot of it does. If they drastically increase their energy imported from another state, the rates will rise. Other states are also limited in how much they can export based on their own consumption. It also requires proper engineering to send the energy there. They can't just wire it in from New York. They may just show their true loyalties and increase the amount they import from Mexico.

myLot reputation of 57/100. thegreatdebater (1837)   ranked 333 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Taskr, my point is that there are no cities in California that are struggling with electricity right now, so more won't help them. You can't just put this in a barrel and keep when you need it, so having more doesn't do anything at all for you.

I think the funny part of this is you have people like yourself who are a free market people, yet don't understand this market. Arizona would only hurt itself if they pull the contract, LA will get their electricity from another company, and may never go back to Arizona. You are correct that they are limited, but they could always import more from Mexico adding insult to injury to the people of Arizona. This is why I think Arizona has picked a political fight that they can not win, nor they can afford to fight. It just doesn't make sense to do what they did, except for winning elections, which could very well back fire on them.

myLot reputation of 60/100. Taskr36 (6782)   ranked 284 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Arizona didn't pick this fight Debater, LA did when their city council voted 13-1 to cut all contracts with Arizona. The loss to Arizona's electric company would be purely financial and be specific to the electric companies. If LA has rolling blackouts it will hurt EVERY BUSINESS in that city. It will also hurt police, fire departments, and hospitals. Do you really think it's wise for LA to do that and put their citizens in such danger to make a political statement?

Keep in mind that this was not the governor of Arizona that pointed out that such a boycott means they would have to cut contracts importing electricity. It was Gary Pierce, a commissioner on the five-member Arizona Corporation Commission. He alone really has no power. He was just putting LA on the spot to show that their threat was empty. We'll see if he was right.

Another thing to think about is that LA has contracts with the energy companies. Breaking those contracts may have severe penalties. Also, how long do you think it will take LA to start getting power from another source? It's not as simple as flipping a switch. The city would suffer while they tried to negotiate a contract with someone else.

"Arizona has picked a political fight that they can not win"

What political fight did the state pick?

myLot reputation of 57/100. thegreatdebater (1837)   ranked 333 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Taskr, Arizona pick this fight when they were warned that passing this bill would bring a lot of trouble, and the governor was warned that signing it would hurt her state. But, they all decided to pass this law, and now they have to deal with the consequences of their actions. This is America at it's best: Groups raising up to fight social injustice, and a law that is discriminating against one race. Our founding fathers would be proud of the people rising up against the state government. This what the constitution is all about Taskr, I am surprise you aren't supporting this. Remember, all of the founding fathers were immigrants, and I am sure that they would have fought this bill as well.

LA is a big city, and I am sure they could find other electricity companies that would supply them. I understand it isn't as easy as flipping a switch, but I am sure it can get done.

Arizona picked a fight with the entire nation, and now they are feeling the ramification from that decision. I think it is funny how this issue is bring some people together, and it may unify the country in November instead of dividing them like the republicans need.

myLot reputation of 60/100. Taskr36 (6782)   ranked 284 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

"Taskr, I am surprise you aren't supporting this"

I support a constitutional challenge of this law. I've stated that in other threads. The condemnations and boycotts won't change or rescind the law. Of course even a constitutional challenge is pretty questionable when that moron Eric Holder attacking the bill is too lazy or too stupid to read it.

My issue with LA is simply that they are willing to cripple hospitals, police stations, fire departments, and private businesses as well as their citizens just to make a political statement.

For the record the law does not discriminate against one race. In fact much of the law targets those who smuggle people across the border and business that hire illegal aliens. There is also nothing in the bill that specifies any race. It would apply to any illegal alien whether from Canada, Mexico, or Sri Lanka. Just because the majority of illegal aliens in Arizona are Mexican, that doesn't mean that any law meant to curb illegal immigration is inherently racist.

Have you read the bill debater? I know Obama and his cronies are too lazy and incompetent to bother, but if you haven't, you should. It's not like combing through that bloated piece of garbage they called a healthcare bill. You could actually read through this pretty quickly.

Taskr, I agree that the boycotts won't rescind the law, but it sure will send a message to the businesses that will lose money. Remember back in the 80's when this upstart network called FOX showed two shows that the right wing of the republican party thought was anti-family (the Simpsons, and Married with Children). They boycotted sponsors, and picketed out in front of the FOX offices (funny how all of that disappeared when FOX introduced the FOX News Network). That did hurt FOX when it came to sponsors, but they survived because they made a pact with the people boycotting them. I am sure that this boycott will hurt some businesses, and we will see how this effects the law.

I have read the law, and it is only a slap on the wrist for the businesses. I feel that we need to much harder on businesses that hire these people. The first time you put the CEO of a major corporation in jail for violating this law you will see REAL immigration drop dramatically.

It won't go as far as AZ turning the lights off (although I wish they'd flicker them a couple of times to tell LA, "hello"). LA, SF, SD...should have thought before they boycotted. These boycotts/swords can cut both ways. I'd like to see LA (and the other cities, who should have been backing AZ) "eat" its boycott...or I really would flicker the lights... Go AZ!

I know it won't come to it....but I wish Az would cut off power to LA for a couple of days. Just to show them that they need to mind their own business.

Darn, you beat me to it. I'm just glad I saw your thread before I posted the same thing. I was going to call it "LA residents better learn to read by candlelight".

Ok, so this is just another example of the idiocy of California left wingers. You'd think the mayor and city council would realize that it is physically impossible for them to just up and cut off relations with a state that provides a quarter of their electricity. If they were smart, which clearly they're not, they would have first negotiated a deal with another supplier. Importing energy is not easy and it's part of what bankrupted that back-asswards state.

I personally would LOVE to see Arizona cut power for just one day to get those morons crawling back begging forgiveness. At this point, LA either needs to lose power, or retract their asinine policy of cutting ties with Arizona. Anything else would be them just proving to the world that they are completely full of $hit.

Sorry I beat you to it. I am sure you will get it next time.
I agree that California (or at least LA) is acting stupidly and childishly.
I would also LOVE to see AZ turn off the power to them. That would show them.

At the rate that cities are boycotting Arizona (Seattle makes the 11th), they're not exactly in a position to start picking and choosing who they sell to.

myLot reputation of 60/100. Taskr36 (6782)   ranked 284 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Most of the "boycotts" are just talk. Even San Diego officially announced that to avoid any confusion. Either way when you have a valuable resource you can pick and choose who to sell it to. That's why all the boycotts against Iran are meaningless.

myLot reputation of 83/100. lilwonders456 (3526)   ranked 34 out of 3,985 in politics  2 years ago

Arizona and the people of that state have the right to pass the laws they want. They only opinion that matter is what hte population of Az think of this bill...from what I have read they are hugely in favor of it. It is there state...they get to decide their own laws.

Just like we would not want a foreign country dictating to us what our laws should be...one state should not be telling another state what their laws should be. Don't like the laws in AZ...don't move there.
