Obama ramps up criticism of Arizona immigration law

President Barack Obama stepped up his criticism of Arizona's controversial immigration law Wednesday, calling it "misdirected" and warning that it has the potential to be applied in a discriminatory fashion.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, Obama called for overhauling the nation's immigration laws and said that can't be done unless Republicans support it.
The controversy over the Arizona law, which would make it a state crime to be in the country illegally, hung over Calderon's visit. Both leaders oppose the law, with Obama directing the Justice Department to review it for possible civil rights violations, and Calderon's government issuing a travel warning for Arizona, out of concern that Mexicans face an adverse political environment there.
Calderon made good on his pledge to take up the immigration issue during his meetings with Obama. He said the Arizona law criminalized migration and could encourage discrimination. He also called for the U.S. and Mexico to work together to solve the complex, politically sensitive immigration issue.
"We can do so if we create a safer border, a border that will unite us instead of dividing us, uniting our people," Calderon said. "We can do so with a community that will promote a dignified life in an orderly way for both our countries."
Almost twice as many people support the Arizona law as those who oppose it, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll this month. It found that 42 percent favored it, 24 percent opposed it and another 29 percent said they were neutral.
Obama has asked the Justice Department to review the law for possible civil rights violations. He said Wednesday that he expects a final review soon, after which his administration will decide how to approach the law.
Obama has promised to start work on an immigration overhaul, but he's also warned that Congress may not have the appetite to take on the sensitive issue this year. He said Wednesday that he can't get the 60 votes he would need in the Senate to pass an immigration bill unless some Republicans step forward. That Republican support could be hard to come by for Obama in an election year.
Obama also reaffirmed his commitment to Calderon's offensive in the deadly drug wars that have affected both sides of the border, saying he admired Calderon's courage in taking on the drug traffickers and cartels that have created a public safety crisis.
"This is not just an issue of the drug trade," Obama said. "This is an issue of how is it affecting people's day-to-day lives in Mexico."

We all know Obama is not happy about the new Arizona Law but this partnership with Mexico's President Felipe Calderon and Obama's concern how is it affecting people's day-to-day lives in Mexico....WTF this makes me sick that he does not care what the illegal immigrants are doing to our day-to-day lives. The people are criminal and should be treated as such
Does anyone still believe that Obama cares about the American people????

I have not read the law and have only got bits and pieces of it but I think he is right it could be applied in a way where the police are profiling against Mexicans when the law would also apply to anyone from any country that didn't have the papers needed to be in this country legally. I think the law could be found to be against the constitution under the whole police needing to have some sort of detail that could lead them to believe that a person is here illegally. I am not sure how you could even prove that a police officer had a reasonable reason to check the persons status as American citizens or authorized to be here. I could see this law needing to be re worded and re applied it could apply to people who break the law because they could then deport them.

Have you read the law? It merely echoes and reinforces the Federal law that this present and many previous administrations have refused to enforce. It even includes a provision for people detained and questioned unjustly, without sufficient cause for suspicion, to sue the state and local law enforcement for violating their rights. There is nothing in this law that is not in the federal immigration laws. All this fuss about it is being made by people that haven't read the law.

dragon54u Thank you for your comment. It seems that is the biggest problem Obama's chosen staff, congress and the senate have forgotten how to read hence the reason we are stuck with Obamacare and the complaints about the new Arizona law which is a law that should have been enforced years ago for all the States.

Maybe they should have shown Calderon the law in Spanish. Or tell him this is the new policy for Mexico. Then he would say no it isnt string enough. What a bunch of hypocrites. I understand the need for diplomacy and foreign affairs. But NEVER EVER leave the law making to them.

Sure he cares about the American people, the ones with money that is, look at how many wall-street members he has appointed to his cabinet. Actually all the law does is require the police not to be discriminatory but to enforce the law without discretion. I seen a clip the other day of the AG (who I have nothing but contempt for after his speech on how anyone who talks or blogs about the constitution needs to be on a terrorist watch list) and he was condemning it but when asked if he had read it he admitted he hadn't read it...go figure! Our government in action!

Divide and conquer, the perfect formula for destroying a country.
The Mexican government kills, rapes, tortures and imprisons illegal immigrants that cross their own southern border. Then sits in judgment of we the people when we want our laws enforced. Do NOT blame the average Mexican citizen, blame our two governments.
We are under attack from our own government on so many fronts, there are so many fires to put out. Half of us are blinded by rhetoric and pretty speeches and the other half are disorganized and mistrustful of each other. It won't be long now.

Again, the monster who sits in the WH is an abomination who hates America. He will do anything he possibly can to destroy us, including pandering to Mexico, at the expense of our freedom and very lives. Calderon should be ashamed of himself; Mexico is his "house" and he is responsible for taking care of his own. As for the disgusting usurper, who should by now be in jail instead of preening and pontificating, he wants illegal aliens to be here to vote for him in droves, among other things. This, and everything about him and all he does is c--p, and, still not one brave soul in our Congress or our courts comes forth to tell the truth of his illegitimacy and relieve us of a blight on our country.
Arizona is constitutionally, morally, and ethically well within its rights in enacting a law to protect the people of AMERICA. It is the duty of the Federal Government, but, be very sure, it's the last thing Obama would do - in any way protect the country he delights in destroying. It is his mission to tear us apart, and, woefully, he is succeeding.
No one in his right mind could EVER think this disgusting usurper cares a whit or gives a ---- about this country or its people. Why are there so many self -destructive people allowing this lowlife to even put his posterior in a chair in the WH while the penalty for treason is hanging?

I'm glad to see that someone else has recognized at least one of the impeachable offenses Obama has committed, aiding an enemy. Yes, I call Calderon and Mexico an enemy. Most states are struggling to make ends meet. We can't afford the financial burden the illegal immigrants bring to our nation and yet here is President Obama siding with Mexico against Arizona.

Many thanks, much appreciation, whiteheather. Don't have time for complete response now, but I am so grateful to you for your wisdom in starting this discussion. I've been wanting to start a discussion for two days now, but can't find the time. I'm so tired that I can't seem to get "untired". Hopefully, this, too, will pass.

Yet, another solid reason why he won't get my vote next cycle. Arizona is doing what it needs to. President Obama is too concerned with how other countries see him, that he can't see he is hurting America. But you know the funny thing, he is so blinded by this goal that he can't see all these other countries are actually laughing at him. Once again, his foreign policy has failed and Arizona is suffering because of it.

If Obama thinks it's the wrong thing to do,it must be the right thing to do.He seems to be more worried about the citizens of other countries than he does about the American people.

I fully support AZ! Why on Earth should we take care of Mexico's people? We neglect and deny the means to our own people the "American Dream" by paying illegals cheap wages so they can avoid paying a living wage + benefts to someone who is here legally by birth or naturalization. Why does everything come from over seas? Because it's cheaper to have things made in Asia for pennies instead of paying living wages + benefits to Americans.
I don't know about you but Mexico's president should be the one to get his country's economy moving, raise the standard of living... that's MEXICO's problem no ours!

That is true.If Mexico was a great place to live then no-one would want to sneak illegally into the USA.
