Best way to get your white socks white?

I usually end up buying socks every fall for back to school because the ones from the previous year are way too dingy. But other than bleach what else can one do to whiten socks but still keep the integrity of the fabric. What's your best method?

It seems like I too am continually buying new socks for my children. If it isn't that the socks that they already have are getting too dingy, it is that they are always losing socks. That said, I've heard that baking soda in the washer works wonders, but I've never tried that. I do, however, use OxyClean and it seems to do a pretty good job with maintaining the color of white socks and it doesn't damage colors either. It does cost a bit, but it is worth trying.

I have found that 1/2 cup Clorox II, 1/2 cup laundry detergent and 1/2 cup Cascade or other automatic dishwashing soap in the hottest water you can get will make white clothing sparkle. It also takes out stains in whites. Do NOT use this on colors! I used to stop the washer after a couple minutes agitation and let the clothes soak for about 5 minutes before restarting.

Yeah but other than white or black every other color is in an individual and I have had baskets of those from when my kids were smaller cause they'd never get washed with their match. Such a PITA!

SO I don't buy any socks other than the same ol' brand, same ol' everything so then I don't spend an afternoon trying to figure out if I have any matches in the heap of socks I have. Plus storing that basket of homeless socks.

I feel like I am always buying socks for the kids too. The only way I know to get them white is with bleach also. That doesn't always work though. Especially when the kids are jumping on the trampoline. Their socks always turn black from that.

See I worry about using bleach that there will be some remnants in the washer and wreck other clothes especially w/ this being a top load HE the water doesn't go all the way up to the top like a standard top loader would hence possibly leaving some residue... or am I beign paranoid?

Exactly and I can't see wasting the water on doing an empty load to make sure it doesn't wreck our stuff KWIM? Unless my load after would be load of rags or towels where I wouldn't cry if they were marked up a lil bit.

Nope, you're not being paranoid. I don't like using bleach that often myself. Never know what it will do for the next load of clothes.

When i did diapers, years ago, i soaked in redu from amway. They sparkled. I would probably soak in oxy. Get soil out, then the redu. Besure to wash the redu out.

Your so cute Hatley! I might have to stop being cheap and buy some other items besides spray and wash outside of detergent. *LOL* But the dollar doesn't go as far as it used to.

Hi, 3SnuggleBunnies. I think that you should try using some baking soda in your laundry. This gives the washing a boost. I used this with the bleach and it made my socks come out very white. I hope that it helps you in your laundry.

Many are afraid to use bleach in the washer. I usually start the water, then pour some bleach in a small container and hold it under the water and I make sure its really mixed well in the water to not damage the clothes. What I do with white socks or white t-shirts is wash them with blue jeans. Washing white with blue makes the clothes whiter!! Of course, make sure your jeans have been washed in bleach first or the color will run. I did the same with some white curtains that were a bit on the yellow side.....washed them with blue jeans and they came out really white!!
