Is there a contraption that would make your job easier?

Using a segway at work - Contraptions that'll make jobs easier

I’m feeling a little bit sluggish at work today, so as I was doing my rounds I thought I needed a contraption that would make my job easier. I work in the office part of a big manufacturing plant. Every day, I have to go around and visit some departments which is off to the other side of the building. I keep thinking that if I had a segway, my job would be a lot easier. I won’t be getting the walking-exercise that I need, but all my tasks would be way easier. So, aside from the obvious phones and computers, what contraption would make your job easier? Would you like a segway where you work at? Or are you happy enough where you are?

There is nothing to make my job easier and I wouldn't have it any other way. I do a lot of walking but I love it. I need to read cafefuly and that is the fun part. In fact I hatye it when I have a slow day.

I know what you mean about hating a slow day. There was a time at my job where we had slow days, it gave me a lot of myLot time. Thankfully our days have been really busy. I guess that's one of the reason I wanted a segway. So I could do my job much faster. Thanks Sarah.

Don't you find the day goes by faster when you are busy?

Yes it does. But that's another discussion. One that I may have raised already.

I had to answer this even though I don't have a proper / real job. A contraption that would make my "job" easier, and one I've actually seen suggested for this very site by a member who is hardly here anymore, is a voice command / typing doodad. I can't think of the - wait - strike that - I know what it's called... VOICE RECOGNITION SOFTWARE. That would be a plus for me as I could just plug the thing in somewhere *looks around : Not sure where* and start talking what I want to say. Not sure If I'd be able to do it directly on mylot but I could bring up word documents and say what I want to type, and then bam... Yeah they aren't that easy though I know as I've used one.

Are you just watching a lot of futuristic films? But I know that there are already a few voice recognition soft wares around. I think my phone even has one for automatic dialling. But it would be great if the software took it to the next step of actually doing what you intended to do. Even if it was just on the computer.

hi bounce58 I did my stint and am now retired, but yes a segway might be nice to get me downstairs to meals really fast. lol. I used to work in the Tustin branch of the Orange County Library system and there were days when I had heavy carts to push that a segway might just have come in handy. But now days all I need is my computer and my monitor and I am off and running doing mylotting.Right now I am trying to type with the racket of a garbage truck picking up the dumpsters next door, there are veitnamese stores behind us as we are in the middle of Little Saigon, the settlement of the boat people who c ame to the US and California years back, its about a 25 square block of vietanmese stores of all kinds. they are really excellent neighbors too.

The segway might have been good to use to get away from the racket of the garbage truck. Even for just a couple of minutes. And I could see a segway being used in a big library. So that librarians don't have to lug the heavy books around as they try to return them in their proper shelves. Thanks Hatley.

LOL A SEGWAY! Yes! Instead of getting up and walking around, I would drive (ride? what verb is that?) a Segway around. LMAOOO. HAHAHAA. I am just imagining me doing this. I am currently bored out of my mind at work, with some free time on hand..And I just busted out laughing. I should put an inquiry in with Corporate about getting us some Segways ASAP!!

Yeah! Go ahead and put in the inquiry. And as soon as you get it, please post a new pic on your profile/username with the segway instead of the bike! Instead of being bored out of your mind, you could drive/ride around and just have fun. While still at work of course.

Hello bounce58, A segway is going to make your work easier and more stress-free that is for sure but when i think about my stomach bulging out i say a no no. I don't want to use that contraption but i would be tempted to, so please don't show that to me. I would rather get a little more tired and have a deep sleep but i don't want to get sluggish, i mean it will make you sluggish after you stop using it. Think about it. I used to go jogging daily but now i have become more lazy now. I wish i had continued it, but well. I more the comfort the more it will affect one after you stop using it. I have not thought much about contraptions that would make our work easier, I wish there was such a contraption which would make work easier for us and also not make us a little sluggish after we stopped using it.

I know what you mean. Even though this walking around in our production floor is sometimes (most of the time) the only exercise I get, there are just days when I wish I could do it much faster. Then I look at my also-bulging-stomach... ...and then I ask myself, what am I complaining about? I should be walking more, instead of thinking of a segway.

Hehe.. well yes, it happens with everyone. Everyone wants to have comfort while working but having it has it's own price. Simple things are sometimes much better.

It's not that difficult after all. All u need to do is to make a few friends over at the other department, so whenever u have to go over, treat it as visiting your colleagues. Linger around longer for some little chats or gossips rather then just "hi, bye" which makes your long walk there so boring. If not, look out for anybody or colleagues who happened to be around that area, get them to walk with u rather u being alone.

It's funny that you mention about lingering at these departments. It seems I've been doing a lot of those lately. I do keep a good professional relationship with my colleagues at different areas on the floor. And we do have our small-talks once in a while. Sometimes that's the only thing that makes the working day bearable.
