I'm Having Such A Hard Time Getting Use To The Dark

United States
September 19, 2010 6:58pm CST
Hi Everyone, I just noticed what time it is and I can't believe it. It's only 7:51pm and it's soooooo dark outside. I guess I haven't really noticed that much lately as to when the sun is disappearing and the moon is coming out. All this time today I've been on the computer doing some research for projects I'd like to do and the time just flew by. I thought it was like 10:00 already but it's not. So why do I feel so tired then? Is this mind over matter? Well, I hope I get use to this....I guess you could say I'm not looking forward to winter at all and this is one of the reasons...tooooo dark to fast and gloomy days. I'll have to come here all the time to get cheered up because myLot does have some funny people that make me laugh! So, are you use to the darkness already, unlike me?

I have a very difficult time when it gets dark early, too. I find myself wanting to settle down and go to sleep a lot earlier in the winter. As the days start to get longer towards spring, then I am more active later in the evening. In the summer, it is not uncommon for me to be up late and get up early without being overtired, while in the winter I feel like I am tired all day and don't really want to do much if I don't get enough sleep.

Oh Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I was beginning to think I was the only one here that felt that way. What you said is exactly how I am, but with all these responses here I was wondering if I was losing it, haha. I don't want to give up summer yet, that's my problem. I like it when the windows are open all day and all night. Right now I'm already feeling like I'm caged, yuk. At least I know there is one other person who feels like I do, whew, I feel better now.

Yea, you are my new best friend! I was just telling one of the responses that I wish I was a bear and could hibernate until springtime, lol! I agree, there are days that I do love watching big snowflakes come down and everything looks so pretty all covered up. BUT, when that day is done, I'm over it. I can usually handle this until the first of the year as the holidays keep me busy...Halloween is my favorite...Thanksgiving, yummy...Christmas, music and fun...New Year, ok, I'm done. Now I want spring and I would be content. Yes, when the windows are open I feel more alive. I wish I lived in the country but I don't. In fact, I live right on a main street but still, when the windows are open at least I can hear life all around me. I think this is why I like camping so much, just to hear the sounds of nature late at night and early morning, fresh air, bright stars, little critters (I have a picture of me feeding a skunk a couple feet away, so cute)...love it! I actually love those little guys and the funny thing is, he/she brought back all the relatives and we were surrounded by skunks, and not one sprayed us. It really was fun if you can believe that! Yes, it is depressing for me too..we'll have to keep each other company on myLot, haha! We'll just whine all winter until spring comes.

Oh yes, I totally agree with you on this one. In fact, "Right now I'm already feeling like I'm caged" sums it up nicely. I agree that there are quite a few times when I feel like I could hibernate all Winter long and it would suit me perfectly. Of course, then there are days when I love going outside and playing in the snow, plus the fact that I would be sleeping through much of my life, so I wouldn't really want to do it ... but I am sure you know what I mean about feeling like that sometimes. I also love having the windows open late and hearing the sounds of nature (we live in the country) late into the evening. It is SO depressing when the sun starts going down around four or five o'clock and it is dark before supper.

I am just now reading this and it is 1:57 in the afternoon... Yes, I am experiencing this as well, since I get so caught up in my school work, that I feel like it is later and I tell my son, "time for bed" Then he tells me, "But it's only 7:30" I hate this too, since though not officially diagnosed, I believe I am slightly S.A.D. We do have a fluorescent light in the kitchen, and the computer does face the south window, so I don't get as depressed as I used to, but still have to make sure I get as much sunlight as possible as the days get shorter..

Oh don't give up, I am sure there is something out there for you, just like there is something for me..:) Though I have not been as aggressive since school started, it would be nice if we had some extra money coming in regularly..

I've been looking and have had interviews for 1 1/2 years already. My age is against me I'm sure. They want pretty faces now, they don't care how much education or background you have anymore. Actually, I just watched a program on this and they said that was true, and they even had employers on which agreed. They would rather have something nice to look at, and even if it was between 2 girls who BOTH had the same backgrounds, they would choose the nicer looking girl. It's disgusting to me. And they admitted it. My friend who is a little younger than me went in to apply for a receptionist job, and they looked at her like she didn't belong at all. They were all young. I have been aggressive in my job search and now I'm just tired of it all. Yes, even a small regular income would work for me.

Yes, I think that's what I have too Carmel. I get really bad and depressed, so that's why I'm hoping my crafts will keep me busy because I know whats coming. My apartment is very bright and I'm lucky for that. I have the sun coming up in the morning from my picture window and going down in the evening from my kitchen. I do face south on my computer also and it's a great view. I will just have to keep busy because I don't see my getting any jobs at all anymore. I've given up.

Hi gabs, Oh, I just hate it and I'm still not use to it. It's even getting darker much earlier now than it was when I posted this discussion, ugh. It really gets me depressed and I have to force myself to get up and do something, drives me nuts. I look forward to spring, haha, when I can have the windows wide open and hear the birds chirping their little hearts out. That's the best for me.

I really don't like the shorter days that are gloomy. We have plenty of them in the midwest. It's dark here by 7 and not daylight until close to 7 in the morning. I get so tired by 9pm and feel like it's after midnight that I sign off the computer and get into bed. One thing for sure is I am getting caught up on a lot sleep! Can't wait for spring.

Hi Carol, It's a really ugly gloomy day here and I'm feeling it already. Have no incentive to do anything which is bad. I have to snap out of it because this is only the beginning. It's been getting dark here earlier and earlier now and just like you, not getting light until later in the morning. I hate it. Yes, I've been sleeping longer too and I'm so used to getting up early. I'm just a mess, haha, but I'm sure I'll get use to it one way or the other.

My hands and nose have been freezing all afternoon. I was babysitting our grandbaby and just couldn't get warm. Came home and turned on the heat since it was about 65 in here and going to get even colder over night. I really hate cold weather and the older I get the harder it is to adjust.

I like dark and I get used to it since I was a kid. I hope you'll overcome it though. I suggest that you get a lamp or something that can light up the place, the dim light. I guess that could help you get used to dark little by little. Plus it will save you energy rather than using the lights.

Oh hon, I'm not afraid of the dark at all. I just don't like it because our seasons are changing and it's getting darker out much earlier than in the summer. That's the part I don't like. It use to get dark around 9:30 in the summer and now it's not even 8:00 and it's really dark. Pretty soon it will be dark by 5:30 towards winter, yuk. I just like the summers when it stays lighter out longer, that's all. I'm not a winter person anymore, too dreary for me. I do use low lighting in the evening as I enjoy that more than bright lights.

The autumn season is here and so begins the shorter days taking us into winter. After such long summer days it can be a difficult adjustment to losing daylight. All we can do is accept the darkness when it comes.

I guess you could say I'm just not ready for winter, lol! The summer seemed to have gone by sooo fast and I'm still trying to hang onto it. Yes, all we can do is accept it and I will, but I don't have to like it.

Well, I live west of you, so it is not as late yet. It is just now 7:25, and it is still light enough that the neighbors are out in their back yard playing volley ball. I agree that time seems to run quickly when I am online. Yes, MyLot is a good place to try to shake the winter blues.

I can't believe it got so dark so quick. It seemed like I just blinked and boom, I was in the dark. I really thought it was much later...ugh. This is going to be a long winter for me, I can feel it in my bones already, haha. Yes, myLot will keep entertaining me I'm sure. I hate the winter blues, I can feel it already and it's not even winter yet.

Right now where I am it is 7:38pm, and it is starting to get dark. It's still light enough to drive without the headlisghts, but it won't be much longer. I really don't mind that it gets dark earlier this time of year. I like night time.

Oh I like the night time but not an early night time, lol! I just like it more in the summer when the windows are still open and you can hear people walking around outside and talking. Right now it's too cold to even have the windows open, yuk! I told jillhill I'm going to be like a bear and hibernate until spring comes.

Yup--I've noticed it getting dark much earlier too. Actually I don't mind it all that much since for me it signals that it's to get cooler/colder soon...I so much prefer cool/cold weather over hot and humid and this past summer was horrid with the heat and humidity In general though I'm trying to figure out where the heck this year went....it seems to have zipped by all too fast

Yeh, the year did go toooo fast. I guess I just don't like winter and I hate it when it gets dark so soon. It was a very hot summer this year, I agree with that one. It looks like I'm the only one here that doesn't like it getting dark early, lol! I just miss the windows being open all night and listening to life around me. Everything is closed up now because it's too cold at night. I wouldn't mind it so much if it would stay lighter outside longer with the cold, haha. This just makes me want to hibernate.

Problem for me is when it gets dark I want to go lay down and watch tv. But it's not even 8:00, haha! I don't want to lay down yet, maybe I should just hibernate like the bears and get up in the spring. I'd be happy then.

I dread the thought of winter, ugh. I am not a winter person any longer, and the older I get the worse it gets. I think I'll move to Hawaii and live like a little bum on the beach and eat coconuts until spring comes back to Ohio. Yeh, right, like I'd come back, haha! No, I don't want to let go of summer either but I guess there is no choice in the matter. Mother Nature puts her foot down and that's that.
