That is dumpster diving! I only do it at work and I don't go inside the dumpster! Most of the times, like cans,I can see and which I can reach! I did it yesterday and I got yelled at for it! Hey if people would not throw out the tin cans I take home to recycle from work or aluminun cans I would not do this! I am not concern about like getting cuts and the like! I just worry about how dirty I get and to watch out for the bees in the summer! So until people start some thinking and respect the earth I will continue dumpster diving!

Heck, if people are going to throw away perfectly good stuff, why not?

What I mean was that if people are going to throw away perfectly good stuff, I don't see any thing wrong with removing it from the trash and re-using it, selling it,whatever. Much better than letting it end up in a landfill.

I hope this was a joke Dawn! It wasn't funny if it was! I take the recycling thing seriously and always will! I also reclyce metals, like stainless steel, cardboard, newspapers, beside the aluminum cans an steel cans. I could with plastic but around here it seems like they aren't! That makes sad because it has become such a plastic world! If we don't recylce more plastic or it will over take us!

Hey, my hubby dumpster dives and is proud of it! He's a classy guy with a great job! He's come up with more than cans! He finds antiques and stuff that people have thrown stuff away in great shape! For instance, our kids got a great bicycle tire pump thrown away by Play it Again Sports! I have some expensive Christmas decorations from Seasonal Concepts. He found some antiques we still have and appraised. Won't tell you what their worth but, it's a lot. No wonder someone yelled at you! They wanted it.

I have not found stuff like antiques or Christmas Decorations! I have found clothes, though! It makes me sick what people throw out! It is like people don't care or don't take the time to do the right thing! It is crazy! I will keep on doing it as long as I can!

You are coming up with "the good stuff" because you aren't thinking like a picker. Don't just "shop" consumer trash. Go to the wealthy neighborhoods. Hubby looks to the inner city wealthy alleys, churches that did a garage sale or big clean out. After Christmas they throw what they don't want and the parishioners are doing it. They tend to not consider the value of what they are throwing, just getting the job done. Good luck.

I don't see a thing wrong with dumpster diving. I've found a lot more than cans, too. People throw out the strangest things and personally I think it's strange that you got yelled at for recycling. I wonder what planet they think they're living on? Because it isn't ours... ours have limited resources.

My co-employees are from another planet only when they know I went dumpster diving! I could not believe one of them! My supervisor never complained before! I think he did just because one of the cooks complained! The cook, she is so surprise! She complains about everything on the planet! Nothing makes her happy!

That's great you're doing that. I thank my fellow earthling. But you should take gloves with you so you can avoid cuts and gross stuff, and maybe some antibacterial creams.

Thanks! I just wish more people would do what I do or least stop throwing the stuff away! I should wear gloves but I always forget! I'll try to wear some when I do it next time! I always wash my hands after I do it. We do have antibacterical sanitizer which I shoul use, too!

You should just keep them in your car or something.

We use to do this years ago and the kids loved it. See that extra recycling money was given to them each month so they could purchase books of their choice through the book club at school. Were those faces happy each time they received their orders. Congrats on your preservation.

Thanks hardworkinggurl! I appreciate the kindness! With all the aluminum cans thrown out could go to be recycled for money for trips by students or whatever! I put the money for recycling in my Christmas club account! You know how that goes!

You have a great vision when it comes to recycling, and your work will pay off. There are two benefits of doing this, being the environmental one and the monetary one. All the cans taken from the dump will increase space for garbage, and cut back more material production of recyclable materials. You should already know that the future of such cans helps the environment in the infinite future. Secondly, you gain a small amount when recycling, which can be used for shopping. This is a great idea, and I'm happy you've started doing this. If it weren't for people like you, thousands to millions of extra cans will accumulate in dump yards in a 10 to 15 year period. Dumpster diving is rather different, as people who have no means to live do this. In your case, a can or bottle is what is taken, and you don't have to crawl or work hard through the dumpster. Its a respectable action that many people really forget and don't realize.

Thanks rovered! I appreciate all what you said! i hope I can motivate at least one person I would be happy! I do it because I care! the money helps, too! I just wish people would think more and take their time when it comes to throwing stuff away! We all would be alot better of and less landfill gets filled up!

That's a great thing you're doing making the world a better place. I'm impressed by your motivation to even search in dumpsters for tin cans for recycling.

Thank you very much! I know I am doing a good thing! I just wish more people would do what I do! If not at least stop throwing the stuff, like the aluminum cans in the first place! More people need to think and recycle like me! I hope I can motivate at once person in the future to do what I do!
