Hello friends I was wondering to start my own business. In short, to be called my own boss. Then someone suggested me to start a poultry business. Do you think it will be a profitable business? Thanks for responding.

Well, I think maybe you are kidding. It could be profitable, but I think a poultry business is an awful lot of work. You have to keep the birds alive and well and feed them and pay the vet and then there are all the government regulations (maybe not as many where you live as where I do) and then the hardest part, if you are selling the meat, is killing the birds and taking the feathers off and storing them for sale. All through my childhood, my parents had a little side business raising show chickens to enter into poultry contests where sometimes they won a little prize money and then they sold the chickens they bred. These chickens, of course, laid eggs, which were yummy, and we ate those, and sometimes sold the eggs. When the chickens were too ugly to show or too old to give eggs, then we ate the chickens. But this was not my parents' main business. They ran a dairy farm and sold the milk. That was even more work than the chickens. A childhood friend's parents ran a poultry farm, though, and she had to work for them and pull the feathers out of the chickens after they were dunked in boiling water. Her hands were always raw and she completely hated her family's business. Like my little friend I grew up saying that farming would be the last occupation I would ever try, but I do still like to grow some of my own food and garden. No animals, though. Several of my family members farmed for a living, but the only one who ever made a lot of money at it just grew sweetcorn. No animals for him, either.

Hi excellence7, all businesses are good and generate good income for the owners provided you know well about the business. Poultry business is indeed a good business as it only takes 3 months or less to rear chicks and they are ready for sale. But it has high risk too. A friend who owns a poultry farm has to close his farm when it was attacked by the bird flu that affected many poultry farms in the country. The Vet ordered all chicks to be destroyed to avoid the flu spreading. He had no choice but to follow orders. Thousand of his chicks were destroyed within a day. He was devastated as all his hard earned money invested in the farm were gone and neither was he compensated. His black hair turned white overnight!

I agree with you friend but risk is the name of the game. It is to be wise enough and make so much profit that even one bird flue's loss will not consumes up to the profit earned. Hope you getting my point. Thanks for sharing.

I've lived on a farm all my life. I've raised every animal from A to Z and raising poultry, untless you have all the equipment, is NOT a good business. I hope you are very wealthy to do this. Cuz it takes a time, money and makes for frustration.

Well, in deciding if the poultry business would be a profitable business for you, you'd really have to look at the amount of competition that you would be dealing with. If there are a lot of people already running that kind of business in your area, it would be quite difficult to have a profitable business. However, if there is not a lot of competition in your area, then I believe that you would be able to have a profitable business.

There is opportunity for those who have the right direction to go. Poultry business is good, but it is a large scale. do you want to breed or just as a commercial man. I have friends who breed chicken and fish. they all made good money from it. i have had so many talks with them,i can know the secret to success, hardworking and thoughtful. But if you have an idea of being a commercial man in poultry business, getting well known of the local marekt is crucial. it depends on you.
