How many Prom dresses does a girl need..

I was sorting thorugh a bunch of old clothes earlier and came across p1kelet's old prom dresses. I counted six! She only went to three proms/balls that I recall. I ought to ask her what she wants me to do with them but I know that she will prevaricate and I'm not in that sort of mood. They aren't my size and I might well look faintly ridiculous in them anyway. I could give them to charity, point them in the direction of E Bay or try a car boot sale. Or just put them in the trash. As they probably cost a small fortune I am reluctant to do that. Have you still got your prom dress(es). If not, what did you do with them (or your daughter's).

I never went to a prom. Our prom was canceled due to lack of interest my senior year - and I was nearly at the front of the line in the interest "lackers"! However, the OTHER roommate still has someone's (probably her daughter's) prom dressed (and BOY are they UGLY!) There is a group here in town called Fairy Godmother's who loan out prom dresses to those gals who want to go but can't afford dresses, jewelry, the whole 9 yards.... You might see if your area has something like that.

I wasn't interested. I think out of a class of over 300, there were 17 people, or maybe 17 couples, I don't know, I didn't have a date either...

Was the lack of interest political or just apathy? I can see that the Prom could be a fairly vacuous event but on the other hand most young people will party for any reason. I am not aware of a Fairy Godmother organization here but I might see what there is.

prom was definatly not something that interested me either as the idea of buying a ticket to go listen to music and dance as well as dress up and pay a fortune for a dress i would only wear once did not appeal to me one bit. then again I was also the one who when I was old enough to go to the bars never saw any point in that either

The idea of a prom is alien to us. What we have in Indian schools is a 'Social Day' (I have no idea why it's called that) for 10th and 12th grades (some students leave school and start college after 10th grade). Girls are expected to wear a sari then (that would be the first time in our lives that most of us would try wearing a sari). Well, a sari can be used again and a Social Day sari is not as grand as a wedding sari. The prom dresses might be outdated or else your daughter could probably use them....ooops...no more prom for her....she's in college, isn't she?

lol...Fishy....not all saris are expensive. Saris are available at various prices. The ones with beads and intricate work (usually worn at weddings) are expensive. But a sari also needs a petticoat and a matching blouse. Most saris come with the piece of cloth from which the blouse may be stitched. But finding the right tailor and perfect fit might be slightly expensive. The Social Day is more a rite of passage for school to the freedom of college. In cosmopolitan cities, we now have high school graduations (we even have kindergarten graduation)....which was unheard of during our school days. Everyone looked forward to 'graduating' from college.

We didn't have proms when I was at school. They are an American import along with school year books. They haven't helped the general level of education either. Months are spend planning the Prom when, in my opinion, they should have been studying or at least learning. Some would say that planning a Prom is a learning experience, but I found that it was mostly "Dad, what shall I do..." meaning "can you give me a lift to XY or Z please"! LOL. So you have to be a tailor as well as a dres buyer. Don't saris come with off the peg blouses too?

The "Social Day" sounds like a rite of passage from girl to young woman. I have always imagined that saris are expensive (but so are prom dresses). She is in college - she graduates this year so there will be a Summer Ball plus her graduation ceremony to dress for. Then she's on her own sartorially!

I suppose that I will have to ask her - but I can't imagine that she will want to wear them again. Sale or donate I think.

I only ever went to one prom I think, and I have absolutely no recollection of where my dress came from or where it went. But I have a wedding dress still, I believe, which sits in the wardrobe of an ex. It wasn't mine. We bought it as part of a collection we sold on, but never got round to this last one. The last time I asked him, it was still there.

At that stage it was wedding clobber and home exercise equipment. Odd combination really!

Hmmm. I suppose that many women like to be a certain size prior to their wedding and afterwards..... There's lots of "home exercise"!!!

I offer a suggestion to proceed cautiously. If p1kelet is saving them (they are hers, right...doesn't matter who paid for them) for whatever reason and you make them disappear...you might just be out for six more dresses. Girls/women are sentimental about stuff like that. Boys/men are more sentimental about the space they take up and the green stuff that used to be in their wallets...

I understand what you are saying. She never even looks at the things. I cannot seriously think that I can get rid without discussing it all with her really.

At p1kelet's age, you could always just let the dresses and other miscellaneous stuff sit, and give it all to her when she gets her own place to live. Then she'll decide if she really wants the mementoes, or if she wants the space to other things. Surely you have plenty of your own 'stuff' to go through and dispose of? Or, are you more like me and finding it easier to throw out some one else's stuff?

Oh gosh I have none of them to date, the wedding dress I cannot tell you what I did with it after the divorce several years later. But as for the prom dress, gosh I can't even remember. I guess my thinking was I will not use all that lace and fru fru again. lol

I went to two proms. My junior prom and my senior prom. I remember each dress perfectly. They were both pink. I wish I had a picture handy that I could scan and show you my junior prom dress it was so pretty. After going to the prom with my friend a few months later we decided to be silly and wear our prom dresses to school one day lol. So that dress got worn twice. I sold both of my dresses on ebay years later. I also go to stores and find dresses that are marked down to $1 after the season is over and save them for next prom season and sell them on ebay for around $30 it works great.

That's very enterprising. I don't know how that might work here. Most girls seem to get new ones. I shall mention it to my daughter and she what she thinks.

My daughter has several as well, and I think she has only been to two. Actually she has a whole room full of clothes that she does not wear. I have been slowly putting things on a site here similar to E-bay. I think if you can get a few dollars for them, its good as it is usually us that had to pay for them in the first place. You know I could start a second hand op- shop here at my place with all her clothes, might be worth looking into. lol Sue

Prom was never really a big thing in our time or maybe I just didn't bother, haha!~In fact I remembered when I went to our college prom, I was the only guy wearing a coat & that made me look very weird where it should be the other way round. Oh well...Hahaha!~

I thought it was formal attire as that was the dress code but people weren't bothered I guess. There were people who even came in Jeans & T-Shirt, haha!~If I knew I would have done the same as I don't fancy in suit & tie

I think it depends on the girl's financial capability.I have seen some girls have lots of prom dresses in their closets.they keep them,as a remembrance or something they could lend.as for me,I would probably donate them to charity.some girls from poor families couldn't afford to buy prom dresses, and these dresses will help.or if she really has a LOT of prom dresses,I will donate some and sell the rest to a thrift store.

I had only one and it was donated to he daughter of a family member who could not afford to buy the dress. I was happy about that because the girl is not in the same school and with being younger we did not have thge same friends. I think it is best you donate or sell then because it would be sad to pitch them. While someone else could use them.

Well, I usually buy about 4 or 5 prom dresses, try on each of them and see which one should I wear. The rest of them I keep in my closet and take it out when I'm going to a special event or dance. Therefore I don't need to waste more money in investing more dresses. That's what you should do just wear them on a special events that require a fancy attire.

I have two formal dresses, and they're both the same colour! A red sparkly long one that I bought just because I liked it, and my red wedding dress that I had custom made, but will also use as a formal dress for other occasions. I have O N E pair of shoes, some high-support hiking books. LOL The wedding dress is long enough to cover the boots. The other one's not quite long enough, but who gives a damn? I prefer comfortable shoes over style.

i know here in north america there are places where you can donate old prom dresses to a place where they either sell it cheaply or give it to girls that cannot afford to buy one. maybe you could look into that.

Never went to a prom, but was a bridesmaid once. That was actually quite a nice dress (not the usual horror) and I think my youngest sister may have worn it as a prom dress (can't remember if she went to a prom, either).
