Reading Outside

United States
March 3, 2011 12:32pm CST
Hey readers! Do you ever take your books with you out into the sunshine and spend some time reading out of doors? I really like going out into the sun and down to the lake. I read my book, I get some sunshine, and it's very relaxing to top it all off. I've always enjoyed reading in new environments. Reading at home in a comfy chair is nice, but I feel like reading out by a lake, on the deck of a cruise ship, or at a Renaissance festival adds so much more to the experience. Have you ever read outside? Do you enjoy it? If you don't read outside, where do you read?

I have gotten my yard chairs into the front yard and I've gone out to read several times since the move. I couldn't do it when they were in the back because of the dogs.

Yeah, didn't like the back yard because the dogs would jump on me. Warm and sunny, but that means it has to be spring or fall, the summers are far too hot for me!

Well that makes for an interesting reading experience. Warm but not too warm. That seems to be the consensus. Myself I'll read in the extreme heat, but that's just cause heat doesn't really bother me nearly as much as cold does.

Sounds like a great deal. Did the dogs bother you while you were out in the back? Do you read in any weather or do you prefer when it's warm and sunny? Most people seem to prefer when it's warm and sunny... me among them. I just plain don't like the cold though.

Hi I know some people like to read outdoors, its a good healthy habit. Its quite a relaxing experience too, as you have mentioned - to sit by a lake and read it under sunshine. I know lots of people like to read when they are travelling too. But I am not much into reading books.

Hi I used to read Lot of Nancy Friday books when I was a teenager - I think that was more to do with my teenage libido. I have read other novels - some notable ones being The Traveller, Fear is the key, Where Eagles dare and also Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. And I consider Da Vinci code my favourite because I just could not get my hands off that book while I was reading, and finished the entire novel in about two days.

Interesting. Personally I feel like I can't pick a favorite because I've read so many books that I adored and couldn't put down. I read a new one of those every couple of weeks.

Ah well... I suppose it can't be helped. I don't do a whole lot of "research reading" myself. I mostly read for fun. I've been trying to pick up more non-fiction this year, and so far the count is 14 fantasy novels and 1 non-fiction book. lol I haven't read the Da Vinci code. But I wonder... how do you know it's your favorite novel if you (by your own admission) haven't read many novels? lol Just curious.

You wouldn't have wanted to go outside in the sun in summer to read books had you been born in my city!!! But yes, in winter, I usually take my books to the rooftop where I have a nice rope cot which I stuff with pillows to prop me up, and I sit beneath the open sky reading. In summer, I do go out on the roof to read, but that's after the sun has considerably lost its rage for the day!!! So that leaves us with only say, two to three hours. I really like to have something to munch upon while I'm reading, so I usually have a book open (or now that I'm more tech-savvy, my mobile ebook open!!!) during my breakfast or dinner.

I can see that you are hell-bent upon hating ebooks. But consider this thing: there are many books which have been long out of print, or bookstores no longer stock them as their craze has dwindled. In such cases, isn't it a better option to download the ebooks and read them at your leisure? Moreover, I can get many of these ebooks for FREE!!! So that's why I nowadays prefer reading them than searching through millions of bookstores to get a book which may also not be brand new. Hats off to you if you can still find the heart to barbecue yourself in the summer heat!!! As I said, I find the cool afternoons and early evenings more pleasant in the summer, and I go to the rooftop then to enjoy the breeze. I also cannot withstand the cold, and which is why in the winter, I go to the same rooftop in the daytime itself.

Oohhhh... I hate starring at a screen to read. I despise eBooks with an unmatched passion. Maybe I don't live in your city, but my city's pretty darn hot just by itself. It's going up to 107 today. I actually don't mind the heat much... it's cold that gets me. When it's cold out, then I don't want to go outside... but if it's hot then it's not as big of a deal to me. I just wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Maybe I can go swimming later too.

I can see that you are hell-bent upon hating ebooks. Yup. You got that right. It's not so much the idea of eBooks themselves, but the idea that eBook advocates are pushing for... which is the elimination of print books. There's no way for me to sugar-coat it or say it nicely, but I hate that idea. I know that lots of books go out of print, but you can still get hard copies at used book stores and I'd really rather do that (rather HUNT all over the world for a print copy) then contribute the the book-killer and download an eBook. That and I really do hate staring at a screen to read and I'd rather have a real book anyway. And I can get books for free at the library. I know you're not cool with running all over the place to get a used book and that's great. Download your eBooks away, but I won't be joining you. lol, I probably shouldn't be barbecuing myself. I hate tanning (I don't think it's attractive on me), but I wind up incidentally tanning all the time. And I may not think that 107 is all that bad for heat... but I think that everything below 70 is cold so I guess it balances out.

Oh as long as I am comfortable, I can read anywhere..Tuesday it was nice enough that when I went over to my neighbor's house to let her dogs out, I took my math book and did my work outside and the table. But if I didn't have work to do, I would have a book in hand.. Right now, I prefer the sun shining on me because it is still a little cold, but in the heat of the summer, I'll find a shady spot to sit..Today it is too darn cold to go outside, I froze when I walk my other neighbor's dog..

Mine was math homework.. But it was good to get it done, the sooner I don't have to take math, the better.... Your weather sounds like mine, by Friday it is suppose to be sunny and in the 50's, the Sat rain, which will make it cold again..Not until spring has taken a hold will we continue to have warm weather..

I hate Math too. But I agree.. it's got to be done and it's better to take it sooner rather than later. It's been in the 70s with a bit of a wind chill here.. but nice and sunny overall. It's supposed to get cold again soon... I'm not sure when. Can't wait for summer myself. I hate the cold and I've been so happy wearing my shorts and tank tops again these past few days.

lol, well I've been lucky cause it's really gotten warm here. It'll probably be freezing again next week just cause that's how the weather works right here. It's been loads of fun though. I haven't taken any textbooks out to read yet, even though I should be reading them. lol

Early morning i would like to sit in the front of sun shine, that is a good time to read the books in the outside. I really feel enjoyable that type of study.

Now I'm an avid reader, but I really don't read to study. I typically read loads of fantasy novels or other fiction works. I recently finished one non-fiction book which was also a fun read for me (Surprised by Joy by C.S. Lewis) but I still wouldn't call it studying. I kinda resent that so many people immediately connect reading to studying because I've always thought of reading as something super fun.

Well among my favorite fantasy novels are the classics like Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, and The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. Some of my favorites published more recently are the Shannara series by Terry Brooks, the Magic Kingdom of Landover series by Terry Brooks, The Legend of the Guardian-King series by Karen Hancock, The Icemark Chronicles by Stuart Hill, the Books of Pellinor by Alison Croggon, The Dragon Keeper Chronicles by Donita K. Paul, The Auralia Thread by Jeffery Overstreet, The Pendragon Cycle by Stephen Lawhead, The Heir Trilogy by Cinda Williams Chima, and the Unicorn Chronicles by Bruce Coville. Some of my favorite books in other genres are the Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, the City of Ember series by Jeanne DuPrau, the King Raven Trilogy by Stephen Lawhead, and This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti. I read children's, YA (young adult), and adult books indiscriminately.

I would want to try that and be able to read a book somewhere in the park near us. But honestly, I haven't tried reading outside my room or my house. I find some quiet here at home and enjoy reading wherever I go. But there was a time where I took a book on one of my travels and read the book while on the road.

I always take a book with me wherever I go. So... out of state, to class... the grocery store. I'm never without a book. I find it very relaxing to read outside in the sun. I love being able to get away from all the stresses of life and technology and just have some quiet time reading in a park. I highly recommend it.

Since I've moved I've been thinking about reading outside. THe weather is a lot nicer down here. But when I was living in Maryland my daughter loved to take her book and a blanket outside lay in the graass and just read the day away. The one thing I don't really regret was having to fuss at her to come in to do her chores. It was worth it to know she was reading and enhancing her vocabulary and learning new things.

lol. That's good. If she was wasting the day doing something like watching movies or surfing the internet, then there'd be a problem. Sounds like a nice way to spend the day to me.

I love reading outside too, but I like it better doing it at home, I guess that we all have this special place in home where we get in touch with our souls in a deeper way. I always carry out my books with me, of course, but I find it more relaxing reading late at night, when there is no noise, and you can get into the book.

I don't really think I have a special place at home where I can get in touch with my soul. lol I really enjoy reading outside cause it's peaceful and it's pretty. There's just something about reading in an exotic environment that strikes me as very beautiful.

I like reading outside. Right now it is out of the question, because the ground is still covered by snow, but I look forward to the summer months when I will be able to spend more time outside. I like to sit in the garden with a cup of coffee and a good book. I also like to read in the park or at the beach. I live on an island and there are many beautiful places where I can read while I am enjoying the view At the moment I have to read inside. I read on the couch, in the bed, in the car or in the bathtub.

I'm looking forward to the summer myself. It was really nice out the past few days all sunny and warm, but today it got really cloudy and a bit chilly so I didn't go out to read. Still got snow? Wow... you must be somewhere up north.

I am a book worm and everytime sitting at the same place and reading a book is just so boring for me so I go outside and sit in the garden to take some fresh air and also to see things around. I do not like to read books in sunlight but I will prefer shade and sit on a sofa outside with feet crossed under my thigh. I enjoy reading outside. If it is not the garden then it would be under the shade of a tree.

That sounds nice and really relaxing. I like to read in the sun more than I like to read in the shade myself, but I like getting some time in the warmth. It's super cloudy right now though. Makes me sad.

Since in Canada summer is very short,I try to spend as much time outside as possible. So when the time is nice,I like to float on an inflatable mattress in the pool in the backyard,or lie down in the hamoc,or swing and enjoy a good book. When I am away on vacation,I read on the beach,by the pool,or on the grass in the meadow.Love reading!!!!!

Ooh! That's sounds like fun! I've never floated on a pool and read before. I think I would run into the same problem I have when people suggest reading in the bathtub... (But what if I drop my book?!?!? ) I can't wait for summer myself. I love it when it's warm and I can spend time reading out in the sunshine.

Yes when it's nice out I like to sit in my backyard and read. When I used to live on an island I lived near a big beach park. Almost every day I would go to the beach park and sit on a blanket in the shade and read.

Hi. allyoftherain. Yes, I have read outside in the past. I like it too. I have not read outside lately. It is kind of hard to enjoy a good book without my kids always coming around to bother me. I have read on the back porch or on a swing. I have also read a book when I was at the park in 2009. It was so relaxing. I have really enjoyed reading outside at the park. It is so peaceful and quiet.

I like reading out by the park too. I've been going down to the lake though because it's closer and I like looking out at the water as well. I'm sure you can find something to entertain the kids while you read. That or you could find a reading buddy and you could take turns watching/entertaining the kids and getting some reading time done.

Hello allyoftherain, Yes, it's enjoyable to read outside. One of the best places would be a beautiful garden or a field. Well, i haven't been to exotic places but never carried my books along, i am sure i would have taken some time for reading. I have trips with my friends and can't afford much to read coz we really don't get much time, but i do realize how beautiful it would be reading on the top on mountain three kilometers high, i have been there! But of course it was very cold but still. I like to go my balcony and read there, it's really comforting especially in the early hours on the morning. It really feels different to read in the bluish ting of the morning light. If nothing outside, the balcony can do for reading in the early hours of the day. You should try it, it's really very comforting. Well, unless it's really cold outside, hehe..

sometimes i would read outside when the weather is comfortable. but only in my backyard though. i have yet to read in other places. mainly because ifever i would go to a certain place, i wouldn't be going in there just to read. i'd rather walk, explore or simply pass the time staring at nothing. mostly, i prefer reading a book in bed, or sofa. that way when i feel sleepy, i could just mark the page, close the book, and doze off.

I hardly ever feel sleepy when I'm reading unless I've tired myself out doing other things. I like walking too, but I love reading more so I've been spending time reading outside rather than walking. It's a bit of a walk to get to my favorite reading spot anyway, so I still get plenty of steps on my pedometer.
