no , not all together but all three are made out of , dare I say it? vegetables, right? But don't french Fries lose their vegetable title once they meet the fryer? And Tomatoes are considered a fruit? And Popcorn can't be deemed a veggie can it? Whenever the subject of vegetarianism comes up I automatically say I don't eat veggies because fries , tomato sauce and popcorn are as close as I get to eating veggies.

What about coffee and chocolate? They are vegetables too, and so is bread. Even though grains fit into a separate food group, grain/bread/cake is a vegetable, because they're not an animal, or mineral. The way I see it, natural things are either animal, vegetable, mineral, or made from animals, vegetables, minerals. My silk blouse is animal (silkworms!), but my cotton blouse is a vegetable. The rings on my fingers from metal to stone are minerals. Coffee is a vegetable, because it's not an animal or mineral. OK the water is a mineral, but that which seasons the water (coffee, mocha) is a vegetable, but if I add cream to the top, it's animal, because milk comes out of a cow.

Ah, but the bread, cake, chocolate just may have some milk or egg in it, making it partly animal. The popcorn still meets the criteria for a vegetarian diet if you don't put butter or cheese on it like I do. But you could still have the butter or cheese if you aren't vegan. But I suspect this is all a red herring discussion, since I suspect anyone eating fries is having them with a hamburger. Am I wrong?

bagarad, I just wanted to know if these are considered veggies or not. And I think not. I will still eat all three. It was red herring. I just want to make sure I wasn't lying when I say I don't eat veggies. and from the responses I am not lying!

While not healthy, french fries are still technically a vegetable. Tomato or marinara sauce still constitutes a serving (or partial serving) of fruit. Your diet makes me want to weep, but that is my general reaction to most people's diets. You can be a vegetarian even if you don't eat fresh fruits and veggies. Vegetarianism is the lack of meat from one's diet; that doesn't automatically translate to "healthy" diet. You can be a vegetarian and live on mac 'n' cheese and potato chips. Even veganism doesn't necessarily have to be healthy. You can live off french fries and vegan doughnuts (healthier than some things, but certainly not as healthy as a piece of fresh fruit).

And the "weep" comment was meant to not sound as heavy as it came across. I was meaning it to be lighthearted, but, sometimes, things don't read the way they are meant.

Yes you're right about all of that. They do lose their titles once they meet the fryer etc. However, popcorn is most likely the healthiest as it's just corn that's popped, and provided you don't use a lot of salt and butter it's still healthy. The same with tomato sauce, as long as it's not too processed it's still healthy... French Fries, if you just cut up potatoes and put them in the oven, or use healthier oils to fry them in... Each of these can be made healthier, but of course nothing is as healthy as just leaving the item be. A lot of people are steering away from the healthy stuff though.

This reminds me of the discussion I have with my kids. I keep telling them to eat their potatoes, and they say NO. I tell them how about french fries? You seem to like them, but they are potatoes! To this they'd shake their heads and say, dad french fries are not vegetables! I guess not!

Ever since Reagan wanted to deem ketchup a vegetable , any vegetable that is fixed a way the food Nazis disapprove of , it loses the vegetable title. I started this post because I thought I was being a hypocrite saying I never eat vegetables when I eat fries and pizza. But Tomatoes are fruit and fries lose their veggie title the minute they hit the fryer!

Actually these three kind of food are made with vegetables, but when they are mixed with another ingredients, then they won't be considered as healthy as pure vegetables. Thus vegans avoid to eat that kind of meal. :)

Amazing trivia here. I was like, "hmmm...good point." I haven't really meet any vegetarians personally yet but I think I'll point some of this things out when I get to have a conversation with one.
