Should the government make it mandatory to label GMO foods?

Does your food contain GMOs? Incredibly, we really don't know.
An estimated 80% of processed foods sold in the U.S. contain genetically modified organisms. Yet GMO foods are totally unlabeled as such!
For the past 20 years, Americans have been denied their basic right to know because of a flawed regulatory system that has relied on corporate science without adequate peer-reviewed testing and scientific oversight.
40 countries already have GMO labeling requirements - but not the U.S. It's time for that to change.
I just signed a petition demanding that the FDA require labeling for GMO foods to Americans can know what we're eating. Learn more and add your name here:

There are a lot of things that are not labled correctly. GMO stuff should have a nice big sticker on it saying what it is. I'm in australia and am very lucky that i don't have allergies to food, but my mum she does and it can be very dangerous.
With the way rules are we grow crops around us. Conola is one example there is GM stuff available, and if it is let grow feral it will go back to mustard which is where it orginates from and is a real pain in the butt to try and get rid off.

I agree. HUGE sticker in a BRIGHT color. Our bodies were made to convert foods that are natural. That is why there is more cancer and other problems, like never before.

Yes, I think it should be mandatory. They've had regulations and guidelines for organic foods and everything else, so you would think that this would be also mandatory. I think consumers should have the option of making their own decision whether they want to eat modified foods like that, or not. I'm a farmer, and even I see the sense of that labeling. I won't grow any genetically modified crops, and prefer organics. Whenever humans mess with nature, whether organic, modified, or not, I think it should be labelled accordingly. Our Government says this is safe, but you know, they have made that kind of claim in past history which turned out to be absolutely & horribly wrong. (Think: DES babies, and also DDT for 2 examples!) Therefore, it should be up to the consumer themselves as to whether they choose that type of food or not.

That is where I become angry. This is supposed to be a free country, but they do things behind our backs. Just be out in the open. The problem is that they all have their hands in each others pockets.

That's incredible! They can't keep this informations from people - especially Americans with rights! Good that you've explained how they rigged the system to get away with it. Any chance of you guys banning GMO's at this late stage? If you label them, then it's easier to boycott them, otherwise just go organic &/or bio-dynamic certified. Hopefully your people-power can prevail on this one. I've always only ever had certified organic & biodynamic produce.

This is an excellent discussion nanajanet! I completely agree with you that food made from GMOs ought to be labeled as such. However, one problem is that there is a lot of cross contamination between GMOs and regular crops since they can fertilize each other. I guess the petition you put up only pertains to crops that were directly grown with GMO seeds, but what do you do if one farmer's crop is contaminated with GMOs? Or should this be a separate question?
Thanks for putting the link up!
