Do You Feel Like You Are Being Watched When You Are Using Your GPS

We finally got in to modern technology and got a GPS for our cars. It really is a life saver and can really get you out of a bind when you are lost, but it kind of freaks me out a bit that something is monitoring my every move and knows where I am at all times. I know it bounces off some satellite somewhere or something and it is not an actual human watching us drive along but to me it just feels kind of wierd that something out in the universe has its eye on our car. What do you think?

I don't have a GPS and don't really want one. People rely too much on technology, I think. I went on a drive with my son and daughter in law and they wanted to go to a certain restaurant on the way home. I knew about where the restaurant was - what street it was on and which part of town it was in, but they had to use their GPS to locate it because they didn't believe that I knew where to go.

Nothing and nobody is watching you when you use a GPS device. The device receives signals from three or more satellites and works out your position from that. It then uses that information to locate you on its built in maps and to suggest routes to you. This kind of in-car device doesn't send any information out, so they are not telling anyone where you are. This is in contrast to GPS tracking devices which can be installed in a vehicle. They do a similar thing of calculating the location (though more commonly using trianglation of available cell phone masts). If the owner wants to know where the vehicle is, they usually dial a particular number which sends a signal to the device and the device responds with its current location. Similar apps can be installed on smart phones so that a parent, for example, can track the movements of a child.

Thanks for the information. I know nobody is actually watching but there is something so odd about it. The technology is amazing.

GPS is one of the wonders of the new age. A most useful tool. If you are worried about GPS then mobile phones must really freak you out as you can be tracked with them whereas you cant with the normal GPS map reading gizmos.

I know that nobody is actually watching me or tracking my location when I am using my GPS but I kind of see what you mean. After all there is something out there that is able to tell me exactly where I am and exactly where I need to go. It is all done with technology though and there are no actual people watching us in our cars driving along.

I've never really thought about that before, but I can see your point of view. I guess it is able to know where we are at all times! I guess I won't worry about it though. I think they can also tell that from my cellphone! I hope that it means if we ever get in trouble, we will be easily found because the eyes know where we are!

You are being watched even when you are using the internet!!! You I.P. (Internet Protocol is like an address) is being constantly tracked. SO it does not matter as long as you are not doing anything fishy.

I do not have one, and probably do not plan to get one. I have heard that they make weird errors from time to time. It makes you wonder how it works though.

Yeah, GPSs are really wonderful. I do not use it all the time, but I do use it when traveling and driving around in the cities I am not familiar with. I like the remark "you have made a wrong turn, turn back". That really sounds like somebody is right behind me watching ! Any way, these devices are very helpful for travellers.

I have been a GPS owner for quite sometime, and actually never go this type of feeling. It is similar to using Mapquest online, only easy and at our disposal each time we use the vehicle. Try not to feel this way as I really do not think anyone is watching at all. It is just a computer guide to guide you such as an electronic map.
