We say we respect freedom of speech, but do we really?

We say we respect freedom of speech, but do we really? We say we respect honesty, but not really. If we respected either we would WANT people to speak their minds. Then we'd use our freedom to either accept or reject what they have to say. Instead we pass laws to ban certain words so that we can sit fat and happy thinking no one thinks "that way" anymore.... then we feign outrage when someone does.

It is amazing how much people will shut down in order to be politically correct. For example...when Obama ran for presidency and then got elected...I was shocked at how many racists came out of their proverbial closets...people who I really thought I knew. To be honest, I found it refreshing. It opened the lines of communication. I actually am all for free speech and yes..I may get offended by what you say and I'll tell you so straight up. We'll go back and forth and eventually either give up or find a peaceful way to disagree. If I get real real offended....no big deal...I'll just avoid you like the plague. If I were black and you were racist...I'd want to know that..strait up. don't lie or be someone you are not. Do you want the truth or a candy coated lie?

Exactly! We would actually know where people stood, instead of demanding they lie just to appease us.

Sid, you said it better than I could! PC allows people to hide behind euphemisms and we never really know what kind of people they are. I think that's why we have PC--so that miscreants and liars can hide behind a veil of respectability.

I agree like the whole taking under god out of the pledge. Every key would rather. Not hurt anyones feelings instead of freedom of speech

Yes, or for that matter, people refusing to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

Oh, it is, but I'd rather someone be disrespectful and honest than make everyone think they give a crap when they don't. Then at least we know where people stand.

I don't know, Ted, I guess you and I define "freedom of speech" a bit differently. I was raised to believe we got certain "rights" and "freedoms" upon becoming adults or in some cases the closer we got to being adults but that with those rights and freedoms came responsibilities. As an adult I know I have every "right" to belittle someone for no good reason or to use nearly any derogatory words or terms, including racist or otherwise, but I also know that wouldn't be very responsible. I certainly respect everyone's freedom of speech but that certainly doesn't meant I WANT them to "speak their minds" if doing that means using some of those words you're apparently referring to; when they do so my outrage isn't feigned, by the way! Here on myLot I'm happy to exercise my freedom of speech whenever I post a discussion. I respect the rights of others to voice their opinions whether they agree with me or not but that doesn't mean I want them to insult me because we have different views. I mean, of course they have the "right" to be rude and abusive but I'm also free to disrespect them and their behavior. Annie

yes, freedom of speech has been used by politicians and many people for their own ends and interests. in other words, it has been abused to save them and prosecute others. but i like the concept of this freedom of speech. there must be one in this world. if it was not existing, we could create it because it is a need and a right.

"freedom of speech" is included on our constitution but i never consider that its implemented properly in my country. Where the issue of implementation is not perfect, there i cant say that we respect freedom of speech. A person will be assaulted badly if he raises voice against some issues. have a nice time.

Yup, last week a woman and her child got eggs thrown at the car they were in, because they wouldn't sign a Recall Walker petition.
