Mum had a cataract removed in her left eye about 9 years ago, then she had to wait for this one to grow in her right eye before it could - also be removed.
She is actually more worried about it this time round. I asked her "why" and she said, "Well, I know what to expect, the first time I had no idea."
I don't really know what she means but I suppose many of you will know where she's coming from with that comment.
Either way she's being very brave and I'm sure she will be fine. I will send her some positive vibes at 12.30pm tomorrow as that is her appointment time.
At least her neighbour is giving her a lift there and back..which is nice of her.

Tell your mother there is nothing to worry about. My 87 year old aunt had them taken out about 6 months ago. She sees del good now. And my friend just had it done like 2 months ago. They do it so easy and fast. My aunt and my friend said that it was painless and went extremely quick. So I am sure your mother will be fine.

She said her eye is "wrecking" today but she has been resting a lot - unusual for her but necessary, as the last time she went on holiday which wasn't a wise thing to do in hindsight.

I am guessing that she already had one of them done. And I am assuming that she is in pain. Well, it really should not hurt like that. I know from my aunt and friend that it hurt a little and it did not last long at all. And they had eye drops to take as well. Along with dark glasses so that the light does not hurt.

Hi Janey, This is something that I don't think that I am looking forward to, but luckily my optitian tells me everything is OK, but I keep hearing about people I know having to have this done.. It doesn't bother me what they do, but the fact that my eye is going to be open watching it all! We eat lots of orange peppers that according to my optician, is good for the eyes. My wife is much braver than me, because she has a history of detached retina problems and recently we had to rush her to hospital because she saw flashing lights as a sign that something was going wrong. They put some drops in that meant she could hardly see for a few hours as her pupil grew huge and she had to rest that eye until it righted itself. So if those flashing lights happen again, we got to get her there ASAP or it could mean a more major operation to actually get behind the eyeball. She doesn't seem to mind though.. Incredible... Her beef is with the dentist, and that doesn't bother me as I can just sit through most things there. My reasoning it that if it gets too much, I will just tell him to pull the tooth out! They don't seem to want to do that though, but I am not keen on having more alamgam in my mouth, especially in view of the fact that I believe those silver fillings have been banned in America.. but I am not 100% sure on that.. I will send your mum some positive vibes too..

Your Mrs is a typical Aries..she HATES dentists..as I do! I don't mind them until I have to have something done..like having my wisdom tooth taken out last year. The sound of it being yanked out of my gum makes me sweat, even now.
Positive vibes have worked..Mum is fine.

I have a 77 year old baby who needs the operation but is unwilling to go for it and he drives a two wheeler in the night and he is diabetic and he has blood pressure for which medical ailments he doesnt take any tablets and when I ask him to take some he yells at me so bad that I get depressed and ...well, he has medical insurance...why wont he go for it? Beats me..

It will certainly be a successful operation and you may well take it easy.I get slight cataract in my left eye, so I don't see very well in it ,but it is not such as to have that removed.

Sometimes they do take a while to grow. There has been a 9 year gap between Mum's first cataract and her second (the removal of them, I mean) which is very unusual.
I hope yours doesn't give you too much trouble.

I wish there are no complications and her eysight is just restored to being as ever before. THough these procedures have been simplified and they are much easier than they were some thirty years before, some complications do occur. In my mother's case, her operation wasn't too great a success and she has developed glaucoma after that. She would dread the next one and I wish it takes a very long time for that ; your mother has been lucky to have had a gap of nine years. Hopefully she will be alright.

Thanks for your concerns. Mum is fine but she was told that this particular cataract was "deeper" than the other one, the reason being (in our view) that they have to grow more in order for them to be taken out now, because of cut-backs. This makes it a bit harder for them to be removed.
However, she does have the option of laser surgery in future if it hasn't all been taken out.
She seems fine at the moment though.

Positive vibes have worked as Mum's op went well, thanks.
She's a lot braver than I would be. I hate anyone near my face, especially with a scalpel in hand!
