As you said there is brown rice and white rice. If you want to eat rice the brown is better for you.
The basic breakdown on white rice is:
1/4 c of uncooked white rice
160 calories
36 grams carbohydrate
0 grams fiber
3 grams protein
The basic breakdown on brown rice is:
1.4 c of uncooked brown rice
170 calories
35 grams carbohydrate
2 gram fiber
4 grams protein
Both provide you with small amounts of calcium and iron; some white rices have been "enriched" with b vitamins (thiamin, folic acid).
Nutritionist know that the average person needs 20 grams of fiber per day to stay healthy - only brown rice has ANY fiber.
They also know that you need a lot of vitamins that are not found in either type of rice (A, C, etc) to stay healthy.
The leading cause of diabetes and weight gain is excessive amounts of carbohydrates in relationship to the protein taken in. Recommended ratios of carbohydrate to protein are no higher than 2 grams of carbohydrates to 1 gram of protein 2:1 (some recommend that you have no more carbohydrates in a day than you have protein - 1:1 ratio.
So, if you are eating a lot of rice everyday - it is NOT healthy. You will not see a problem immediately; but, over a long period of time you will develop health issues. Having a small amount of brown rice each day can be part of a healthy diet as long as you are adding addional sources of protein, fiber, and other vitamins sources (fruits and vegetables).

More vegies are good - they add a lot of vitamins and fiber BUT they add little to no protein and they do add more carbohydrates.
Be sure to also add some more protein to balance out the carbs if you can - fish, eggs, tofu, cheese, meat, etc.

I've been told a few times that rice isn't good but when I tried to look it up, I couldn't really find a definitive answer that rice is indeed bad for the health. The usual things I found mostly concerned diets and eating too much of it. Those are what make rice not good for us. But do let us know if you've found something since I'm a rice eater and I'm quite interested if this grain really is bad for our health.

Hi befrindwithme! I think I cannot live without eating rice. That's because I'm Asian and live in Asia and rice is a staple food here. Several times, I've tried to reduce my rice intake so that I can reduce my weight but it gave me very little or no help at all. I would dream of rice and ended up eating more rice. Now, I cook white rice and brown rice together, like a cup of white rice and 1/2 cup of brown rice. Brown rice, as they say, has more nutrition than white rice but still, despite of all that promotion, not everyone 'can' eat brown rice. That's because brown rice tastes different from white rice. Asian food, fresh pickle and soups MUST be served together with rice. The bottom line is, eating rice is good and healthy as long as we take it in moderate amount and serve it together with vegetable, fish and meat.

I am from Borneo. There is one thing that I know and almost everyone knows (I think) that as we grow older, we should eat more fresh and raw food because when we grow older, we have stopped growing (taller) and our 'growing old' bodies need more repair or maintenance to keep us fit, strong and healthy (and young). I think we can still eat rice but just reduce a little bit of the portion that we regularly take. Then combine rice with 'Asian salad/ pickle', stir-fried vegetable with a little bit of fish and meat. That will be a balance daily serving.

Whether it be rice or any food, moderation is always the key to healthy eating. Eating too much of anything is not at all healthy. Now with rice, we know that brown or black rice is a better and healthier choice but whether it be black or brown or white if we consume more than what our body needs we will have problem managing our weight because this gives us lots of carbohydrates that turns to fat when we consume more than what we can burn.

It all depends if you're healthy you can eat rice as you wanted but if you have a hypertension it is being advised for you to have just one cup of rice. If you feel you're getting stouter and that you hates to be the reduce your rice. It's carbohydrates so it's need by our body but if we are sick the doctors are advising us on how to deal with our rice.

Befrind, indeed eating too much rice is not good for health. Especially those have diabetics and high blood pressure problem. My mother and father unable to eat a lot of rice since they have health problem. So, i see them always estimate their rice intake. But, they always eat more on fruits and veggies. As for myself, i am also cutting down my intake of rice since i don't want to develop serious health problem like my parents.

I tried to search online to see if there are any articles or facts that state that eating too much rice is bad for your health but I never came across a reliable one. I believe that too much of everything is bad for your health.
Everything should be taken into moderation. When eating, be sure to have a balanced diet that is complete with Go, Grow, and Glow groups of food.
Rice when eaten will be converted into glucose or simple sugar. So, I think that those who have high blood sugar content or diabetic person should limit their rice intake to avoid having a high blood sugar content.

Its true too much of anything is bad... but it all boils down on how much rice/brown rice/any type of rice you consume because there is no such thing as "healthy food" in a large quantity, it doesn't mean that you have eaten fruits the whole day you are safe... same goes with rice...
Speakeasy had made a great job on giving the breakdown and a detailed nutritional value of rice and brown rice (respectively).
Too make it more detailed/add more info im gonna add what i learned in my basic nutrition class way back.
Since we are talking about carbohydrates and rice is carbohydrate the digestion of carbohydrate starts in the mouth with the help of our salivary enzymes (lingual lipase), the in juice produce by the pancreas, and enzymes produced by the lining of our small intestine.Stomach doesn't contribute much(only a fraction) in the digestion of carb/starch and fat because our stomach digests protein by releasing pepsin to breakdown it and protein is the first to be breakdown/absorbed next is starch and fats are the last.
The digestion of carb/starch takes a two step process: First the salivary enzyme and pancreatic juice breaks down the starch into smaller molecules called maltose. Then the lining of the small intestine splits the maltose into glucose and absorbed into the blood carried through the blood stream and stored or used by the liver to provide energy for our body.
If you think about it consuming too much rice would result to too much maltose in our intestine those more glucose to be absorbed and carried throughout our body and stored in the liver...the next thing you'll know you will be fat and diabetic...sooo eat rice in moderation
