How soon is too soon for Baby food? |
| |
| My child's pediatrician says that he would prefer me not give my son any food, whether it be baby rice cereal, baby food, or food off the table, until he is at least 10 months old. I didn't listen to him though. My aunt started feeding her son, Rice Cereal when he was 8 days old. My baby was about 10 or 11 days old when he first had cereal. I now give him cereal in the morning, with a warm bottle of milk, Around noon, he gets some kind of vegetable with a fruit, and at supper time he gets the same thing as at noon. Right before bed, He gets a bath every other night, cereal and a bottle. People tell me that this is too much for a 4 month old baby to have. He will be 4 months old on the 11th of December and is now weighing in at 14 lb 6 oz, and is 24 1/2 inches long. He gets around 4 6 oz bottles a day. And still seems like he's hungry. Is this too much food for him in one day? I just want your opinions. | | | | | |

| | 4-6 months is the time to START introduding solid food, before that time, you risk your baby developing food allergies. | | | |

| | I started my children on rice cereal between 4-6 months of age. The formula is a food that is very dense in calories. It will keep your baby satisfied much longer than fruits or cereal. Maybe he is not hungry when he fusses. If he is 4 months old he is probably starting to cut teeth and is getting anxious to start crawling around. | | | | | | |

| | Thank you for your response. I've thought about the cutting teeth part. I'm not sure how to find out whether it's teething or not. I'm a first time mom and not sure on a bunch of things! | | | |

| | Babies will start to drool a lot when they are beginning to cut teeth. They will rub their faces often, be generally fussy, sometimes even run a slight fever, and will gnaw on everything!! Maybe try a cold teething ring and see if that helps. If he seems like he is getting some relief from it, he is probably teething. Also check his gums to see if they appear swollen and red. That is another sign of teething. | | | |

| | Feeding children at 8 months old is way too early. Their digestive system are not yet fit to get solid foods at the time, and this is the reason why doctors recommend feeding babies at around 4 months time. I wonder why your doctor recommended feeding at 10 months, for me that's already late.. I wonder too how your aunt and you have managed to feed babies at those early age and i think that's the reason why your baby has now been accustomed to this constant feeding and not being satisfied enough. unless your doctor has told you that your baby is not over-weight, then I believe there's no cause for alarm but just the same be aware and conscious of the kinds of food you give your baby. As long as you're giving him healthy food, then I can say that you should go on with what you're doing. | | | | | | |

| | Let me correct my statement: I should have been "feeding babies at 8 days old" instead of the one written "8 months old", i hope mylot can put an edit option in the posts.... | | | |

| | I have 5 children and I started feeding them off the table, like little tastes of gravy and mashed potatoes, etc right away (couple of weeks old) just not in big proportions... They did fine. A couple of them would never touch the cereal, but I always introduced veggies before fruit...they will like the sweet taste of the fruit and then not eat the veggies. Some of them really enjoyed having cereal in their formula right before bed and they would sleep through the night. My opinion is that they will let you know if they don't like it and as long as they aren't losing weight, then you must be doing something right. Good Luck! | | | |

| | Babies that are breastfed already get that sweet taste of fruits from your milk. Keep that in mind if you're considering holding off on fruits... | | | |

| | First off, every baby is different. I have learned to never listen to the doctor when it comes to feeding. I had my baby on cereal at three months because he was acting like he wasn't getting enough to eat. I gave him 4 oz of cereal every night before he went to bed. My doctor went nuts about it but I didn't care. Only you know what to do for your kid...you spend the most time with them. You are not supposed to put your child on baby food before 6 months, but you could get away with it at 5 months. Right now my son is 8 mths and his feeding schedule is as follows: when he wakes up at eight he gets a fruit baby food, at about noon he wants a formula bottle, at about three or four he wants another formula bottle or cereal, at about six he gets another formula bottle, and at 8 or nine he gets a vegetable baby food. This works for him, but like I said earlier, it all depends on the baby. The website that I can find the best feeding schedule is www.baby-health.net/articles/33.html , hopefully that will help you out. | | | | | | |

| | Good points. I agree. I think my daughter was around two months or so when I started mixing a little rice flakes in with her formula. By four months, she was getting small amounts of bland baby food, mostly banana, peaches, peas, tapioca type foods, and a very little bit of chicken. | | | |

| | 10 months old?!?! That's insane! I started feeding my son rice cereal when he was around 5 months... then I started introducing the jarred baby food at 6 months. Now he's 9 months and eats three meals of baby food, some baby oatmeal, and still his formula bottles throughout the day. I never really followed a "guideline"... just followed my instinct! | | | | | | |

| | 10 months!! Thats crazy, my son was eating off of my plate at 10 months. LOL My 4 month old has been eating cereal for a while. Im not completely sure how old she was when we first gave her food. The first food though was stuffing and green beans...we put them in the food processer. And she loved it. LOL now when she sees that you have a bowl of anything she automatically thinks she is going to get some, so she starts kicking and smiling and opening her mouth. Its pretty cute. I think she has more bottles though. this is bad of me...but it is easier. LOL...I do however make sure that she has atleast one bowl of cereal and atleast one fruit or vegetable a day. | | | | | | |

| | I started feeding my baby when she was 4 months old. I am amazed that your baby was fed at that very young age. It is appropriate to feed the baby, as they would say when he/she is capable of controlling her head. But it is a good thing to feed the baby as early as possible so that he will also start eating solid foods at a younger age. If he ask for food give him, just don't overdo. =) I picture your baby as a very healthy baby. | | | | | | |

| | I started both my sons on cereal at around 3 months. They did not get fruit & vegetable baby foods until they were 4 months. I did not start them on meats until they were 8 months and was still told that was too early to start on meats. My youngest is now 11 months and he eats all table food except his cereal. I still feed him the baby cereal but only once a day. Every once in a while I will give him one of the stage 3 desserts. As for formula they had around 32 oz.until they were 9 months and then went down to 24 oz. a day. | | | | | | |

| | From one Doctor to the next the information that you get will be different. And todays Doctors have an extremely different take on the subject of when to start giving cereal to a baby in comparison to the Doctors of yesterday. My Mom had 6 children born between the early 1950's until 1970 and she said that the Doctor that delivered her first 5 told her always to feed the baby if the baby was hungry. If the milk doesn't cut it, then start out with the rice cereal. My daughter, who is now 12 years old and is not overweight and has no food allergies, was given rice cereal when she was several weeks old. | | | |
