well since I am 27, the first historical event that personally remember occuring would be 9/11. i know there is probably more that happen but 9/11 will always stand out in my mind, I remember exactly what I was doing when I first heard about what was happening, I remember what I did that entire day.

The first historical event I really remember was the assassination of John F. Kennedy. I was in 7th grade and just leaving the cafeteria when a boy came up and told me about it. I also remember seeing Jack Ruby kill Lee Harvey Oswald on TV. I've never had an event impact my personal life. I think that, as a teacher, the one that hit me hardest emotionally was the Challenger explosion. Everyone was so hyped up about teacher Christa McAullife going on the flight... and a few seconds later she was gone.

That's the same event that I remember. I was in 5th grade and the principle announced for the teacher's to come to his office. In a few minutes she came back and told us what had happened. I remember that they then had the radio on over the intercom the rest of the day.

It was the same here. We spent the entire afternoon listening to radio on the intercom. Then we got a 4-day weekend.

You guys must be about my age! LOL I was in middle school (we called it junior high school back then). I remember someone coming up and telling me our president had just been shot, and I thought they meant the president of our school class at first! I think I was in the 7th grade.

I remember where I was standing, what I was wearing and the horror I felt when the first space shuttle burst into flames and killed all the astronauts. I followed the school teachers story that was on the flight, I was stunned. I'll never forget it.

You've got a good point there Suitsme. The space program has been going on since I was a kid and I can't think of anything of real value we've gotten out of it.

I was at home with my daughter who was sick that day. I was cleaning my bedroom and she came in and told me it exploded. I told her that they always looked like they had smoke behind them when they went into outter space. LOL. I thought she didn't know what she was talking about. I think she was in the 4th grade or something. She finally convinced me to go look and see. It was just unbelievable to me that could really happen!

I am a Muslim and Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Azha once in an year. Prophet of God, Hazrat Ibrahim got the order of God in their dream that they'll have to give sacrifice of His son. He decided that He'll do it and took His son with Him and at the time of making his sacrifice, another animal came instead of His son and to remind this thing, Muslims celebrate EIid-ul-Azha every year and give sacrifice of any animal on Eid-ul-Azha. I was born on 3rd day of Eid-ul-Azha and i like it and celebrate this event with religious passion every year.

I remember Desert Storm. I was in second grade at the time and we sent a care package to the soldiers. I even personally got a letter back from one and we became pen pals that year. I would have to say 9/11 had the biggest impact. They evacuated Pittsburgh thinking we were next because of the federal buildings and the closeness we were to the airport. I just started college that year.

The first I peronally remember is everyone talking about how the troops were coming home and my teacher telling us about it. This was with the Vietnam war. The next one I really remember and it effecting me was the Iranian Hostage situation. Watching that unfold as a pre-teen was life effecting that is for sure. I cheered when they were released and before that they were always in my prayers. I'm not sure which had the biggest impact on my life. There have been so many that have happened, both good and bad. I think all of them effect us even in a small way. They shape who we are.

The moon landing. I vaguely remember it as I was very young, but I remember how excited my parents were at the time. As a kid I wanted to be an astronaut and I love reading about space exploration and this might be why. http://www.kidport.com/REFLIB/Science/MoonLanding/MoonLanding.htm

I remember that one also. I was a kid at that time as well, but old enough to remember it well.

It is not the first one I remember, but 911 did have the most inpact on me. My husband is in the military, and on Sept.12 he was called away, and we hardly seen him after that. He was always away on missions. It really effected me and my kids.

I vaguely remember the Challenger explosion, and only because someone else in this discussion brought it up. As far as effecting my personally, the end of slavery would have to be up there. As would women gaining the right to vote and the Roe vs. Wade decision. The Americans with Disabilities Act passing. Of course, 9/11, during which I lost my fellow disability rights activist and friend Colleen Fraser on Flight 93, would rank up their as well. It's just so hard to choose.
