Could you fall asleep when it is hot with no wind?

It was extremely hot last night (July 23rd, 09)without wind. We turned on the fans. We tried to sleep without turning on the air-conditioner, but in vain. I got up twice to take a shower to cool myself. Later my wife turned it on...
