Do You Mushroom Hunt?

Murels - Mushrooms that my daughter and I found in our yard

When I met my ex, he was a mushroom hunter. I had never tasted Murels before but once I did, I loved them! I don't really get to do much Mushroom hunting since I have a 2 year old but they do pop up in my yard. This past Sunday, my daughter and I looked out in the yard. I found 2 mushrooms and she found 1. Today I fried them and ate them with some ranch dressing, they were so delicious. I've uploaded a picture of them right after we picked them. Do you hunt mushrooms? Do you know anyone who does?

You might think I'm crazy but can you eat any type on mushrooms that you find growing? I have never hunted mushrooms, I think it would be neat. Everyone were I'm from always has said that you can't eat the wild mushrooms around here.

NO NO a thousand times NO. You have to know which ones are safe to ear and which ones are poisonous. Some will make you sick, some will kill you. The best way to learn is to go with an experienced mushroom hunter. If you have any doubt about the fungus, do not consume.

thats what i was thinking, I wouldn't even feel comfortable eating one if I had a book with pictures.. they do have mushroom guides at the bookstore. I think of that movie Into the Wild.

I do not mushroom hunt. But I used to live in British Columbia and there were some big mushrooms growing on the sides of trees that the Chinese would gather and use in their dishes. We do have button mushrooms growing here, but with the sprays floating around, I would not touch them. I do not know that much about mushrooms anyway so would not trust myself.

No because I do not know which ones are safe. We have wild mushrooms and other fungi all over our property (we have nineteen plus acres) and I wish I knew but I was told never to do it unless I really am certain and I am not. I was told that even if you have found photos, some are so similar, that it could be dangerous. So I will play it safe and buy them from the market.

When we lived in Italy we used to go mushroom hunting all the time. I used to get very upset because, being the short-sighted one in the family, I could never find any! Mum and Dad would purposely miss picking some they found so that I could spot them and I still managed to miss them! Apparently you have to be careful not to pick poisoned ones! I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to mushrooms but I do remember the hunts and they were great fun even if I couldn't find any!

Actually no I don't mushroom hunt but I do love mushrooms and I buy them every month from the store. I would be to afraid to go out hunting for them myself because there are so many poisonous ones out there that look the same as the edible ones and I don't want to take the chance of killing myself over a mushroom.

When I was a little girl my dad used to go rabbiting and in the mushroom season he used to take me and my sister and we used to walk around the paddocks and collect mushrooms and the wild field ones tasted so good...I can't believe just how many different types of mushrooms there are these days...

I have never gone mushroom hunting. I love mushrooms, but I have never eaten wild ones. We used to get some funky looking ones in the yard when I lived out in the country.

I don't ever hunt mushrooms, I never really ate any. My grandpa used to go out and hunt mushrooms when I was younger but he never took me with him, guess he thought I'd just be in the way..lol. Not too long ago some friends of ours was cooking morrels, and I was kinda leary of eating them because I don't like mushrooms, but I tried them and they were delicious, they're best if you can eat them hot out of the pan. Later when we got home my husband was wanting to go out and look for some..haha.

My 'friend' up in Montana hunts mushrooms. I have known several people around here that do also. After a fire in the mountains here they pop up all over the area. People collect them by the garbage bags and sell them to the nicer restaurants in town and make pretty good money. I have a book on mushrooms and their are actually several you can eat.

Oh my goodness, this really freaks me out. You found morels in your backyard. Did you know those are the most sought after and expensive mushrooms, at least where I live. In the gourmet market they sell for more than $ 100 per pound. If you have lots you should contact some high end restaurants to see if they want to buy them from you. I took a mushroom hunting course one year. As you know there are many poisonous varieties as well so you have to know what you are doing. We trudged about all day long in seach of the elusive morel and found none. At the end of the day the instructor gave us each two morels which she had collected the day before. They were the best mushrooms I have ever eaten. You are so lucky.

Hey singlemommy! I don't know anything about mushrooms! I was only told never to touch them because they could be poisonous! And since I don't like the taste of any kinds of mushrooms it is ok for me to pass on all of them! But, I do know that many people do love them so that if you know which ones are ok to pick then you are very lucky because some of them are delicacies and are quite expensive!

Yes, I have harvested and eaten wild morels, puffballs and shaggy manes. I understand there are many other wild type of mushrooms available that are edible that I did not even know about. Morels are hard to find because they are not white and can be on the small size. Their color and texture makes them blend in with the vegetation. Once you know what you are looking for they tend to be easier to find. Apparently truffels are the most expensive but they grow underground and you need a smeller like a pig or dog to root them out. I underatand there is a mushroom that grows in British Columbia is quite expensive too.
