If you people read my discussion yesterday regarding this subject at:
http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2195203.aspx
You will know that she did some research on the phone number.
She called the Omaha Police Department yesterday.
So, the update is this (from her Facebook page, with her permission)
"Just got off the phone with the Omaha Police Department - asking me more questions about the "circulation dept" scammers - gave them what I had - the lady was amazed that there people who are so gullible that they would fall for that. Told her fools still fall for the Nigerian 419 scam too. She said she would turn the info over to their fraud division."
So, if ANYONE calls you and wants to "verify" information - DON'T tell them anything! They should have all that info and can tell YOU want they have!!!
NEVER!!!
NEVER!!!
EVER!!!
Give some STRANGER on the phone or the internet ANY information!
Be SAFE!!!
Just warning my friends on mylot and anyone else SMART enough to read this discussion!

I am smart enough to follow those personal safety guidelines. I certainly hope your posts and your friend's posts have saved some people some headaches and grief.

It's amazing how so many people STILL can't make the mental leap, and wind up falling for this kind of "phone-y" fraud.
Great words of advice, ElicBxn!

I believe it's people with no common sense are the ones who end up being scammed. I've had quite a few so-called businesses calling and asking to verify something and I'll always ask them to read it off and I'll let them know if it's right or not. I've had quite a few hang-ups from that tatic.

I do not give out information on the phone or internet. If I have order or won anything I know they should already have all my information. I have gotten papers in the mail asking for information and tell me I have won something and please send so much money to. I always throw that stuff in the trash.

Yes, those Nigerain scams abound in Australia too. They have never rung me. But I receive plenty of emails from them and others of a similar nature. I just delete them and ignore them.
Pity there are so many gullible people about too. Its sad for the elderly, as they get confused and are more likely to fall prey to this kind of scamming.
I wish the authorities could nab them.
