Is The Price of Food Killing You?

I went food shopping today, and when I got to the checkout and the girl gave me my total, I wanted to cry. I dont know about you, or if it is the same in all parts of the country, but I am finding the price of food to be horrendous..I see these women that have three and four kids in tote and wonder how they are doing it. We are a family of two and it is costing me about 500 per month to feed us. We do not eat breakfast, and my husband takes two sandwiches to work for lunch and thats it. We eat a good dinner and I do cook pretty much every night if I am in town not working. It just seems like too much money. Granted, I dont buy hamburger helper and that kind of stuff, (Iam a chef) but still, we don't eat filet mignon every night either. Remember the days when chicken was an economical meal? Not anymore. Its not just meat either, its everything. Fresh vegetables, fruit, fish..its all gone crazy. Is it that way for you too? Are you feeling the squeeze at the grocery store?

I know food prices are rediculous. I shop at Walmart and it is expensive there too. I end up buying hamburger which I do not like buying, but it is the only way to help save money. I do go to the frugal cooking web sites and get recipes that do not use that many ingredients. It is only my husband and I as well. We eat only one meal a day because that is all we can afford. It does not seem like that you are buying unnecessary food. Your husband eating two sandwiches for lunch is not unrealistic. With the economy being bad one would think that food prices would be lower not higher.

Hi randy..Yes, you would think so. Here is a perfect example..I went to the store this morning to buy garlic. I put it in everything and buy a lot of it. It is up to almost 3.00 a pound in bulk..garlic....Why?? I've also noticed that in the past 2 months sugar has gone up about .60 per 5lb..why?? Is there a shortage of sugarcane that I'm not aware of and is some strange animal eating all the garlic causing the price to sky rocket?? I guess I've missed all these issues on CNN. I used to shop at Wallmart for groceries too. I don't live close to one at all but used to drive out there because I thought the prices were much better. The last time I shopped there I found the same thing as in every other store. While some items are definately a better price, lots were not and some even higher than where I normally shop..I do believe there is no such thing as a "bargain" grocery store anymore..and its only going to get worse..Thanks for your response as always..

Prices are so expensive and I know I am getting tired of it. I wish there was something we can all do to fight this. I have noticed a raise in prices in garlic and sugar. Meat prices have gotten expensive as well. That is why I make a lot of casseroles. I feel that by making a lot of casseroles it gives us more than one meal. I cook two casseroles a week (which gives us four meals) then I make pizza one night a week and every Sunday we have a roast or pork chops. Every Saturday we spend time with our friends and we take turns cooking or else we go out to dinner.

I also have a family of two, and we eat on about $200 per month. It takes a lot of research and planning to get down to this amount though, and it leaves little to no room for splurging. It starts with making a meal plan every week. We plan seven dinners and seven lunches (which usually revolve around planned leftovers from the dinners) and make sure that we have enough breakfast items on hand for a week. Then we make a list of the ingredients that we need for those meals, plus any staples we might have run out of like milk. We check the sale flyers for all the grocery stores in the area to find out if any of the items we need are on sale. We usually end up going to two stores, one that almost always has the best prices on produce and one that has the best regular prices on just about everything else. The only time we ever buy a name brand product is if it is cheaper than the store brand or not available in store brand. And we only buy meat that is on sale. When there is a good sale on meat, we buy enough for a few weeks and freeze it. We rarely pay more than $2 per lb. for meat (we stick mostly to chicken and ground turkey- beef only makes its way in occasionally, and we don't really like pork except in Asian dishes). We also eat a lot of tofu, because it is cheaper than meat and really quite tasty and versatile. So it is still possible to eat cheap- but it keeps getting harder and harder. The sales on meat are fewer and further between, so we often find ourselves going for a couple of weeks on mostly vegetarian meals. The price of bread is so ridiculous that we only buy bread occasionally from the day-old discount rack. And every time the prices of milk and butter go up, I cringe. Even pasta costs twice as much as it did a few years ago. I can't even imagine how people with kids manage to feed their families these days, especially with how picky kids tend to be.

Wow,,,I admire your abiliy to eat on 200.00 a month..Thats fantastic. Now that I read some of the things you do, I guess there are a lot of places I could improve my shopping habits. My biggest problem is that I'm cooking like I am still in school when the price of ingredients really didn't matter because we didn't pay. I do a lot of French cooking and unfortunately it requires expensive ingredients. Fresh herbs are a must for me and the price of them just keeps climbing..I am going to start a herb garden this spring along with a few other vegetables and see how I do. Sometimes I wish I didn't love good food the way I do because I can't afford it!! The other problem is that while I love leftovers, I seldom have them because I have a husband with an appette that you would't believe..and he's skinny as a rail..not fair..Your comment about bread leaves me to suggest that maybe you could invest in a bread maker..I have one and they are worth their weight in gold. They are not that expensive and you they do all the work..no kneading, no timing, nothing. They make nice small loafs that are perfect for two and you could have fresh bread everyday..There is nothing better than the smell of it baking in the house too. Thanks for your response and some "food for thought" for me..

Starting an herb garden is an excellent idea. I've tried to start potted herbs in my windowsill (I have no yard), but they never take. I've thought about the possibility of a bread machine, but I've decided instead to save up for a good stand mixer that can handle bread dough. My reasoning is that I could also use a stand mixer for other things like cakes and cookies, whereas a bread machine is mostly only useful for bread. I only have space in my kitchen for one countertop appliance, so I'd like one that's more versatile. Another thing I forgot to mention is that I've started shopping at ethnic markets. They often have much lower prices on certain types of produce, and the Asian market I go to has great prices on fresh herbs. If you've got one in your area you might want to check it out.

in my area of Ohio, it seems like that prices just all of a sudden jumped to double or more over night, I went to the store one day to find eggs at over $2.00 a dozen, and oleo, not real butter at like $4 bucks. That is when I started to notice each time that it was getting higher and higher. I also get the sale papers and go through them and look for the things we use. I use coupons if I have them, we eat same thing every month, hamburger, chicken and pork chops. Now you talk about chicken, one chicken here, just a plain old chicken is about $5.bucks, sorry I can buy a steak for that price. There is just 2 of us. But I found a god send, it is called Aldi's grocery. If you have one in your area and haven't been in it, try it, you will be surprised. Eggs are like 78 cents there where they are way over a buck at the regular stores, milk like $1.49 a gallon, milk in the regular stores are $3.00 a gallon. Many of their products are better than the store brands else where. They have polish and smoked sausage in a package of like 3 pound and it is only $3.99, there are like 12- to 15 links in the package, we get it and the hot dogs which has 14 to the pack and divide them up in separate packages. And they taste great, especially the polish sausage. Canned goods like 39 cents a can, don't know about you but to me a can of corn is a can of corn, going to open it and add butter to it. Their real butter is like 1.99 a pound too Potatoes are 1.49 for 20 pounds so by shopping there I do save a lot of money I can use for other items. Only thing got to sack your own groceries. Bag boys must be getting rich if the store has to sell something that cost 78 cents at Aldi's for any where from 1.99 to $2.29 at a regular store.

Hi bdugas..No, we dont have Aldi's in south Florida..wish we did..I did find a place called Penn Dutch Meats however that has great prices but you have to buy huge pkgs. I don't mind that buy my freezer is small, so I have to borrow my bachelor neighbors freezer which never has anything except ice cream in it..The prices at Aldi's sound really good..Lucky you..Milk here is 3.11 a gallon and butter is over 3.00 a lb (real butter) I dont know how old you are but do you remember when chicken used to be a cheap meal?? Well, I do..those days are long gone. Pork is relatively inexpensive here because the southerners live on it. I'm a born Bostonian however, raised in the typical Irish, meat and potato home. My hubby wants to eat red meat and thats what is killing me..Have you seen the cost of New York strip or filet? Yikes..I could buy a used car for that! I dont know what the answer is or when, if ever is going to get better..I'm not real optimisic right now..Lets see what this president does for us..hopefully more that he has done so far..Thanks for responding

I know I have a family of four and every month we seem to run out of food. I think food costs so much and we have been eating a lot of foods that are not really good for you. That is the thing that makes me sad we need to eat and want to eat right but cannot because funds are so low. Something has to give I feel. I know it cannot keep going on like this either I feel bad for us and many others that are struggling to make it every month:) Take care friend I hope for the best:)

Hi mom..nice to see you at my post..I haven't spoke with you in a while,,hope this finds you well..I was just sitting here making my shopping list for next month..Unfortunately my budgeted money ran out before I was only half way through. I just dont know which way to turn. We have already cut out meat 3 days a week and I'm cooking the most economical way I know how but still I cant do it. Thank God for family is all I can say. My Mom helps us out a lot each month so that we can make our mortgage..Jim lost his job 7 months ago and is now working for less than half of what we are used to. I don't see that changing any time soon either as the job market here in Florida is terrible and getting worse..I think the unemployment rate here is over 10%...I was never into casseroles but just bought a casserole cookbook on line and am going to try to find some that might be good to see if we can stretch food that way..If we could get two days out of a dish than that should help. With the appetites in this house, there is seldom any leftovers cooking the meals that I cook. This is worth a try, despite the groaning of the family..I hope things get better soon all though Im not real optimistic about that. I am afraid its going to get a lot worse before it gets better..Thanks for our thoughts..dont be a stranger....J

It is like that here in the UK too. Hubby and I retired and have a reduced income but I've been lucky enough to get some writing work from home and sell articles online to supplement our pensions. I do worry about the future if my work dries up. We moved house last year and now have a big garden project ahead, so we hope to eventually be able to grow our own veg. I do remember chicken making a nice cheap meal. Nowadays it seems the cheapest meat here is pork. The cost of lamb has gone through the roof. And beef steaks are a no no.

Hi jakill,,I guess its the same no matter where you live..I'd love to be able to go to some other countries and price compare..but traveling is something we do very little of now also..We used to take two trips a year and now we are lucky if we get to do a couple of weekends..My husband lost his job of 23 years almost a year ago and is now forced to work in a factory for what he used to make in a day as a weeks pay..We arn't adjusting very well at all..I'm a chef and work on a yacht cooking but the work is not steady. I'm thinking about taking on some catering work or working for a family thats lucky enough to be able to afford a chef. I know that we have to do something because things are only getting worse and I think we are a long way off from seeing any change in the economy is this country..so depressing...Thanks for your response and good luck with the writing..

Yes it does. It is really hard going to the grocery or supermarket with a limited budget because you have to think twice whether to pick an item or not. The quantity of food I was able to squeeze on my budget last year are almost twice of what I can this year. I think it is high time that we grow our own food huh?

Hi keisey..You are so right and believe me, if I could grow my own I would..I am however going to try a vegetable garden this year..Even just for the spices it would be worth it..I'd hate to tell you what I spend on fresh herbs,,its sickening. I grew tomatoes a few years back and was pleasantly surprised with how well they did..I have a couple of horses and I used their poop not knowing if it would work like cows or not but it did..I had tons of tomatoes..it was fun..Just don't have the space to grow too much and the horses would eat it if they could get at it. Great idea though..

I'm feeling the squeeze as well. We are a family of two as well, and our grocery budget is about 300 a month - but our food is pretty basic. We don't use very many spices and quite often our menu is entirely based on what is on sale.

yeah, it is tough times. I have one friend whose husband is unemployed right now, and even just paying for food and rent on just her income is almost impossible. (Especially as he refuses to eat anything other than meat). We try hard, but everything just adds up so quickly. And we don't have meat at every meal, but hey, even beans cost, you know? We're not in our twenties anymore, so the health drawbacks of surviving on instant noodles would be too much in the long run. Oh well. I'm going to plant some garlic and maybe some tomatoes, at least that way it will be fun and feel cheaper.

Hi cugepenguin..300 a month is not bad at all. I'm happy to base my menu around what is on sale, it just seems that the sales get fewer and fewer between. The stuff they put on sale on a regular basis is crap. Maybe its because this area, (Ft Lauderdale) is full of money people and the merchants think we are all made of the stuff..Well not this family..We are having a tuff time..Thanks for responding J

We are a two person family, so it's not too bad for us when we shop. We always shop the bargains and get coupons as well. We also have a discount card since my husband is a manager at the grocery store we shop at. We get the good deals and only buy what is on our list so that we can stay on target and not get extras we don't need.

I am feeling it too for sure. Even the discount stores are not cheap any more. Today I went shopping at Aldis, the cart was only about half full, and my bill $92.00. Granted I did buy some meat, but I thought that was a lot, it like double that when I go to the regular grocery store, and it does not even seem like I have purchased that much. It is very stattering, I am starting to hate going to the grocery store. I did buy a nice honey ham though and that cost $13.29, so that made the bill higher, but I should be able to turn that in to two different meals and then make split pea or navy bean soup with the bone.

Hi lady..Now I want pea soup..I LOVE it and haven't made it in some time..Thas is one thing you can still buy fairly reasonable,,split peas..I have a ham bone in my freezer too now that I think of it..thanks for the idea! I shopped today and the only meat I bought was a package of boneless skinless chicken thighs and a pkg of chicken livers (and the livers are for the dogs!)Its cheaper than dog food, (another thing that has gone out of sight) and they love them. Anyway, my bill today was 130.00..It was all pantry stuff that I was out of but like you said, I look in my frig and cabinets tonight and there is nothing to eat..Its really getting to me and I don't know where it is going to end..One thing for sure, once the price of something goes up, it never comes back down..If only food was optional!! Man has done a good job destroying this planet and we are all paying for it not, literally..Then there are the things we cant control like the unexpected frost here in Florida this winter that damaged so much of the cirtus crop..Beware of the price of OJ and such in the next few months..Its going to go sky high..Thanks for your response.

Yes, the food price is increasing day by day, especially the price of fruits. I don't know when the price will come down. I don't have least hopes about that. It is not easy for a family to face the food price even with two people in the family working. The fruits prices are really up even in the season of the particular fruit. Your discussion made me feel to have some oranges.

Hi daliaj..Fruit is the only place I get a little bit of a break. I have lots of fruit trees in my back yard, oranges, pink grapefruit, mangos, lemons, key limes, bananas and avacados..I use them all too as we are big fruit eaters. I do however also like peaches and strawberries and they are sky high..I paid 5.00 for a pint of strawberries last week and when peaches come back in season, soon, I'm sure they will be way over 2.50 lb..Forget about the other berries like raspberries and blackberries..6.50 lb here in Fla...Its nuts..If I could I would send you some oranges..My trees are full and they are dropping to the ground everyday as the season is nearing end..so sweet this year..I just made orange pound cake, its in the oven now..want some?? Nowadays, I shop as if I've never gone to the store before in my life. That way, I'm not stuck with expectations about how much it should cost at checkout. Granted, I'm still left with the shock and horror, but not nearly as much as before. Those fast food commercials are beginning to look better by as the year continues. That five buck box at taco bell seems like a good deal. I always liked Barkley, and that song is pretty darn catchy. I'm not against going on an all Taco Bell diet. I mean, It would probably end any chance of me losing weight this year. My wallet would get fatter over time, but my body would maintain. Those Cinnamon sticks aren't really junk food when you stop and think about it. Cinnamon is very healthy...I think.

Yes the prices of food all over the country is skyhigh and ridiulous. I have to go to different stores to get the good buys that each store is having that week to maybe save some money. The best is when they have 10 for dollar deals.Try eating healthy organic stuff and you can't because its just to expensive. I can't imagine what we will be paying for food in 10 years. Its really scary if you think about it.

My last name is not Rockafellow..I often wonder, How do you even know that this or that was really grown "oganically" If a dog pees on it, does that make it organic? I dont trust it..Then if you spend your time driving from place to place, the cost of the gas leaves you with no money for the store!! Its a vicious circle and a hard life!! I have not kept track, perhaps, the way I should. I do not think groceries are that high here, though. Another thing to consider is that I buy in case lots frequently. That means I get really reasonable prices. I can also buy large packages of meat and make several meals from them. Fresh food that I buy is generally not too bad, but hubby runs to the store for all kinds of things and so I am not really sure about prices. Bananas are 49 cents per pound right now. I also got chicken leg quarters in a ten pound bag for 49 cents per pound, go figure. I will purchase what is on sale and freeze it. My grocery store issues coupons for things that our shopping card shows that we buy often. I print coupons online, too. I buy a lot of store brand things. We have not been buying cleaning products at the grocery and that makes a difference in the bill, too.

Hi H. Surely buying in volume is the way to go. My problem is storage space and my freezer is not that big. I do go to a meat market where the prices are about the best I've seen locally then break it all down into meal size portions. I only recently started that though but I can see that it is way cheaper. I love coupons but they usually stay home while I'm shopping..I remember them when it comes time to get in line.. I buy all my cleaning stuff at the dollar store and never buy anything except food at the grocery store. Still, I'm having a hard time managing. My love of cooking is the big problem and I just cant do casseroles and hamburger helper etc. I guess thats a personal problem but I didn't train as long and as hard as I did to do 20 minute meals..Now run and get your violin for me!! We have had to cut our budget to the bone just to survive, and I tend to shop late in the day when the fresh foods are being reduced for their sale date. The price of food had certainly gone up. Chicken and fish had become so expensive. Fruits and vegetables as well. That is why we have learned to subsist on simple viands like sauteed carrots and cabbages or cheese omelet or scrambles eggs. Later on, we discovered that eating simple food could actually make us healthier. So we grab a banana or a ponkan orange for snack. We avoid the wax filled ready made noodles. So, the bill is not too much.

Growing up in a big family, I know just how expensive shopping can get. Even just limiting yourself to the basic essentials (which is no fun at all) still all adds up and results in one hefty shopping bill Living alone does have its perks, such as a cheaper shopping bill

I am having a family of three and since the last couple of months it is becoming impossible to eek out a living. The moment I go to the market I find myself lost.Even 200 bucks per day is not enough to buy the bare necessities forget about the fish and meat. The green vegetables are as costly as anything.Same is the case with grocery articles. The prices of cereals and the pulses are skyrocketing. They are increasing everyday. What appeared to be a bit cheap yesterday turned out to be highly expensive today and the prices are not showing even the slightest tendency to come down in the near future infact it can only grow upwards from here.
