Update on The Chronic Wound

Well I have been promising more of an update as I have one. I was waiting until after the visit today at the Wound Healing Center, so I could let everyone know what is going on. All I can say is in the 3-4 weeks that I have been going there, I have been Very impressed and would highly recommend these people to anyone I know if they are in the Seattle-Tacoma area needing help with a wound that will not heal. (Especially if you are a Diabetic.) Last week they did a Skin graft on the wounds, and will probably have to do at least 1 or 2 more. They actually call it an Apligraf and it is quite interesting what they do. I was actually quite shocked how simple of a procedure that this was. They did have to do a little bit of debreeding and remove the top layer of skin so that the skin graph has something to attatch itself too. It overall is something interesting to watch, and Oh the results that come from it in just a week. When they removed it today and looked at the wounds, they are a lot smaller than they were, and one is now more circular and the other ones you can see the New look to them. The skin around it is a little red, which hopefully is not going to be a Bad sign but something to watch. I am supposed to keep an eye on everything, but it should be Ok and hopefully continue to improve, and then see them back in 2 weeks. I will probably get another Skin graft done then to help speed up more of the healing as well. So I am not out of the woods yet, and continued thoughts and Prayers are appreciated but things are looking better. I will update more as I can. ~~TINA~~

I am glad that this is helping as well. It has been a long time coming to find somewhere this caring, and wish I could have went here a lot sooner.

Hi, Tina. Glad you are seeing some progress finally. The Apligraf is so new and innovative that I'll bet it's highly expensive so I hope your insurance will handle it. It is truly a marvel to wound management. Wishing you the best with this treatment. I just wonder why no one thought to try it before now.

Well, the largest problem is that most of the Wound Care centers are unexperienced in this type of thing, and never want to offer some of the Top therapies out there for wound healing. Even when you mention something you have heard or read, oh they do not do it, so you have no choice but to do as they suggest even if it is not working for you. My insurance covers them doing the apligraph as my Doctor is always one that checks with them before wanting to do something. I am going to get another one done the 29th, and looking forward to getting it done as I seen a lot of improvement after they did the first one as well.

I am glad that you have found a place that takes such good care of you. That really makes a difference. I recently switched to a much better doctor and it has made such a difference in my life. I hope you continue to do well and that your would gets completely healed. Having good caring experienced people can make a great difference.

Well, a lot of the problem is I was going to a wound care place just over a yr. ago that always acted like they did not know what to do, and there was nothing they could do and took forever even trying to ask my Insurance anything. When I complained of my sore itching and being red and thinking it was infected they acted like it was nothing. A day later I went to my regular doctor and they did a culture and it was Staph, so money wasted at the wound clinic again. Glad that I left there, but unfortunate I had to pay them the $$ for going there and feeling like it was a waste. Glad now I found a place that really cares and is there to help.

Well, it is good to hear that there is improvement in just a week, but I certainly hope the redness that you are talking about doesn't mean that you are starting to get an infection. As far as finding a medical practice that you believe in, that really is a great thing. My husband wasn't diagnosed with lymphoma until he was able to find a primary care doctor that really believed that something was wrong with him and would work with him to start getting him straightened up.

So was it a graph with your own skin? Or donor skin? Or, I hear that can make synthetic skin these days.

That is good to hear, Now we have to pray that it continues to heal right. I have been lucky I guess never had to have any grafts so I can only guess as to what you are going thru with that.

Hi Tina. I'm glad to read that you had this graft and it has started the granulation of new tissue around the wound as it is closing in. I'm glad you sound like you are much less worried now.

Well, a skin draft sounds like a grand idea. Hopefully that will give the wound an entirely new way to heal itself. What a good thing! Removing the top layer of skin off doesn't sound much fun though. Hope it is a quick procedure and isn't drawn out and painful. I will wonder how it all turns out.
