Free Services

I got a free service the other day that absolutely made my life better. At least for the moment. When was the last time you got something free that positively affected your life? I'd like to hear about it. Those of you who know me are aware of the many migraines I have. In the last two weeks I've had several, the last one lasting four straight days. There is a lady in my church who has volunteered to give me free massages (she does medical massages too, she's trained and certified), but as she works so far away from where I live, I have only taken her up on her offer twice in like eight years. And both times were when I had a migraine (one migraine she managed to get rid of, the other she worked on me 2 and 1/2 hours and nothing helped). You may think you wouldn't care how far you'd have to drive to get one, but I'm telling you the route to get there is long, expensive, and traffic filled. When I have gone it is because my dad took me because he couldn't stand to know I was in pain. Poor guy. He likes to pretend things don't get to him, but he can't stand it when I have a migraine.
Tuesday was when I finally got to see her, and by the my migraine was gone, but I couldn't turn my neck to the right, and the right side of my shoulder and back were so painful. She worked on my left side first, and I could feel when she would hit a knot (I have fibromyalgua.) But when she got to my right side I heard her whisper, "Wow!" The right side of me, all the way down my spine and in my shoulder were just filled with knots. And because of a previous car accident there is some calcification going on one side of my neck. While she was working on my shoulder I thought I wouldn't be able to lie there much longer because the position was making my neck hurt so much. But within minutes whatever she was doing to my shoulder alleviated pain from my neck. She quit after an hour because she thought if she continued I'd be too sore the next day (I wasn't. She underestimated my tolerance of pain.) She told my dad to please bring me back this coming week so she can continue to work on the spots on my neck and back. He agreed and I am so relieved. I haven't had a migraine this week not has my neck hurt. I almost always have a migraine at least once a week so I know she helped me. And she is doing all of this free. My dad did go buy her lunch and bring it back to her. My dad has helped her and her husband in the past, so I think it makes her feel good to help me because she feels maybe she is returning the favor to my father for helping her.
Besides getting a free service that maybe you couldn't afford by yourself (Heaven knows neither I nor my dad even could afford to get me a massage on our own.), have you ever had someone be a blessing to you as a result for something your family did for them? This lady really likes me on my own, but I know she and her husband are grateful to my dad. So I think she helped me for him too.

Woo Hoo, I am so happy for you. I can imagine how a good massage can take away pain not only for the back and neck, but a migraine as well..
I didn't get free service because of something a family member did for them, but more like what they didn't do for them or me. It was my daughter, who insisted on twice taking me to the salon to have my hair professional cut because my husband won't. Though I appreciated it, I don't like having the shorter hair, so I am not going back unless for a trim, but if I allow it to grow, I can trim my own hair..

Many times in my life I have known people who are huge blessings in my life and in my husbands life. Especially when you are hurting and feeling down we need people in our life like this. I have heard of Phsical therapists doing massage therapy etc. on patients with fibromyalga that have been able to relieve a lot of pain in just a couple of visits so anything is really possible. To not have migraines is nice for sure. I have been lucky that I have not had a Bad migraine in quite a while due to the meds I now take for the fibromyalga as well.

I think personally it depends on what Insurance you have as to what they pay for or not it seems. And even then you have a copay which helps, but it is still a Bill.

About an hour after I posted this discussion I got a migraine! lol But I quickly took a migraine pill and it is actually starting to go away now.
The lady said she has several clients with fibromyalgia. It would be so nice if insurance covered things like that for fibro patients.

Hi my sweet lil sis! Sorry about the migranes. I had a bout with
my own for over 6 weeks non-stop after not having them for a few
years. I finally couldn't take it and went to the ER where they
did a CT Scan to rule out a Brain Bleed or Tumor. It finally
went away one day. I was supposed go to a Neurologist, but
didn't. Now I'm having an excruciating pain in my lower back
and butt (where I had surgery about 4 years ago). I didn't
know what to do so I went back to the Surgeon because I
wanted him to "fix it". He checked me and lol! He said he
couldn't "fix me" and I had to go to the Neurologist so I
went the next day-MRI on Thursday. Could be a disc leaning
on a nerve. Not sounding good to me. Not good when it's
the back/spine?
So gf, I know how horrendous
mirgranes can be expecially when they just won't go away.
I would try to sleep and it would still be there day after
day! No pain killers would help. So hopefully this Doc
will figure out where the pain is coming from-he better!
I'm glad you found a way to get "pain relief" no matter
how you get it. I worked for a Chiropractor and swore
I'd never let anyone near back again! I trust the Neurologist
because the Surgeon recommended him and so did the Hospital
ER and my Primary Care Doc. I really hope you feel better and
you can get to see this woman. She sounds like a really
wonderful person! I guess she is "Paying it Forward~Take care...
Love ya, Les

first I am so happy that she relieved the knots that had built up. Regular massages should be a must for you. Once she has removed the knots in the muscles then I think that you would just have a maintenance programme. This is very kind of her and I am sure though that she is feeling the happiness of giving her talents to relieve you of some pain. She is a God send in your lfe - a gift from God. Take it and may your pain always be greatly diminished. Yes, I have also experienced 'freeness' but am under too much pressure to relate any story right now. Let us pray for each other

I have been experiencing the worse migraines in the last month. It is a constant headache and pain with occasional migraines. But for the last month or so it has been weekly migraines for me. So maybe something like this would do me wonders.
I would drive the extra mile to get some relief as I so dislike taking medication. I am on constant Excedrin as I do not have health insurance. I have not received anything free for a long time, but so glad to hear that this has helped you.

If you can find a way to afford it, I highly recommend going to get a medical massage. It's not like they do wildy different things than a regular one, but they know all the spots to get rid of pain. I cannot tell you what a difference this has made for me. The first week after the massage I had one migraine. The second week I had a massage I had NONE! If you can't afford an hour long, some places will do just a 30 minute one. Tell them you have migraines and they may even be able to show you a few things. I just wish I could somehow get everyone who has migraines a free massage because it has made such a difference to me.

I cannot think of anything right now that I have gotten free, but I so understand what it feels like to be in a lot of pain and be treated compassionately and then to finally find relief. I see a chiropractor when I am in pain and he is so compassionate as well as effective. I will take that back. My chiropractor has a light therapy machine and before I got my foot fixed or knew it was the problem he told me to come in any time to get an infrared treatment for free on my knees. I felt the same way about my foot doctor, I paid for the service, but you cannot buy good attitude or compassion. I agree that the medical masseuse needs to see you a few times in a row to help you get the relief you need. I have had one massage and it was great, it took me a long while to decide I was worth it, even though I had received it as a gift. I called, made an appointment then went into shock, as it was a man, but he was a Christian man and kept me talking about our families and he explained what and why he did things.

That is absolutely the sweetest thing! And so glad it's helping you out! I have only ever had one massage...and it loosened everything up too...my shoulders have knots in them. I can't remember the last time I got anything free.....seriously...so you are very lucky! And you are right....it makes them feel good just being able to help you out a bit...even if it's payback for you dad! I watched the very end of Dr. Oz the other day and they were also talking about meditation to relieve migraines.....and lower blood pressure....I didn't catch enough of it...but used the meditation to lower my blood pressure...hopefully it will help also in the future.

My second cousin claimed she sends all the boxes of gifts to my family because we (my mom and other family) helped her sister and her mother while she lives out of state. I don't know if she feels obligated because she could not always fly in at a moments notice to help with even daily tasks or if it was because she is well off has no kids of her own, no debt, no husband and finds this a way to share her good fortune with her family. I do appreicate her boxes, I just wish she'd ask what they needed instead of guessing.

I can't say that I have gotten free service, but my acupuncturist gives me a discount (about half price). I can't believe how much that has actually helped me. Before I started those treatments I had severe abdominal pain in one area (on the last CT scan I had the largest tumor was in that area) and over the last month, I have had no pain in that area. I will find out if it has really helped when I go for my next appointment on Monday. I hope things continue to go well for you. Have a great weekend!!!

I'm glad you got some relief! I wish I knew someone who could give me a free or even a cheap massage. I have some of the same problems.. neck and back injuries from an old car accident. I do not have fibromyalgia nor do I get migraines often, but I do get headaches regularly from the knots in my neck and back. I did get a massage a few months ago, but it wasn't a deep tissue massage, just a relaxing rub.. just didn't do the trick, you know.

It's great to hear that some people who have the skills and knowledge to provide usually costly services are willing to do so for free! I wish I could get massages for my lower back to my knees for free. I'm supposedly free of arthritis but sometimes the muscles and tendons are so tense and the pain is so much that I can't get out of bed unassisted.
The best thing that I've gotten for free in a while is my cell phone service. Yes, it runs through a government program, but I've honestly tried for the last 4 years to find more steady work than what I do now, but I've had little luck. Just one interview for an 8 hour a week job, over a 3-4 day time period. Right now I make between $160 & $200/mo. The cell phone service has been able to let me make my medical appointments and stay in touch with family who do not have internet. I am VERY thankful for to have it.
